NEWSLETTER: APRIL, PRESIDENT: Peter Cooke. There have been some drastic changes to the Rules of Bridge recently which I shall address in the future. LEAD OUT OF TURN: I recommend that everyone please check the board and bidding before leading to ensure you are the correct person on lead. When you lead, place your card face down and wait until your partner acknowledges and agrees Warrnambool again hosted the WESTERN REGION NOVICE PAIRS on Sunday 25th March. There were 10 tables in 2 sections, ably managed by Director Graham Hill. Not surprisingly a majority of players were from Warrnambool but there was good representation from Ballarat, pairs from Mount Gambier, Hamilton, Terang and Geelong. Again members were generous in their contributions to catering which was excellent. Hot and cold food was served by Betty Turner, Jan Cooke and Christine Webb at lunch and tea and coffee with sweet and savoury snacks were available at all times. In the under 50 section Robyn Archer and Peter Dexter were second; in the under 100 section Penny Thomas and Maria Mactaggart were the best performing locals. Members gain valuable experience of completion at this event as well as making friends within the Bridge community. Christine Webb

Congratulations also for her promotion to Club together with Dale. Other promotions include Penny, promoted to Regional and Linda promoted to State.

REMEMBERING A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY. Lucienne congratulating John Sherwood. al male. Typic During labour the pain is so great that a woman can ALMOST imagine what a man feels like when he has the flu! Owen Maslen has hung up his helmet and the Warrnambool Bridge club is fortunate that not only does he play more bridge, he has joined the committee, acts as a spare and is learning to score. GOLD COAST CONGRESS. ABF Newsletter, May, N.B. The number of players! Gold Cost celebrated its 50 th anniversary in 2011 and received 6,900 entries. In 2015, the number jumped to 7,955, BUT in 2016, the turnout was a record 8,354 a 21% increase over 2011 with players from 20 different countries. The biggest day saw 499 tables in play (maximum available 528). The biggest growth was in the restricted area. Where they came from: Argentina, Belarus, China, Croatia, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA WESTERN DISTRICT TEAMS--COLAC: Sunday. April start. Limit 18 teams. $30.00 per player. REMEMBERING FELICIA: May 20, 2017.

DELIGHTFUL DAY AT DALVUI On Thursday 22 nd March fourteen members of the Warrnambool Bridge club sallied forth to play bridge at the historic homestead Dalvui, built in They joined with members from Camperdown and Colac to support the Terang Bridge Club in their efforts to raise enough funds to purchase a set of Bridgemates. Eight tables played serious bridge while in another room much laughter could be heard from those playing a more relaxed and social game. Jan and Peter Cooke were the winners for North/South while Maria Mactaggart and Jeanette Lambell won the East/West section. The imperturbable Peter Cooke was the director for the day, while the Bridgemates were in the trusty hands of the unflappable Tony Plevier. It has been reported that one experienced player (who shall remain nameless) nearly managed to sabotage the scoring system - but as usual Tony saved the day. A delicious lunch was served with a glass if desired. Over $1,000 was raised, making it possible for the Terang Bridge Club to achieve its aim. Organised in chief, by Harold Eller with a large band of workers, the day proved a great success. Visitors could wander in the extensive gardens if they wished or just admire the amazing ceilings, timberwork and staircase of this heritage home. Dale Vagg. Winners E/W. Maria Mactaggart & Jeanette Lambell. Winners N/S. Jan and Peter Cooke. Watching over us while playing Bridge.

ALL ABOUT ALERTING: This article appeared in the VBA Bulletin November (Bill Jacobs).. I recommend this to all members, an excellent article. Peter Cooke. Alerting is about drawing the opponents attention to your side s unusual bidding. Using written bidding you alert your partner s unusual bid by circling and saying Alert. Don t explain anything wait to be asked. The definition of an unusual bid is somewhat gray but the general principle is that if a bid s meaning is not what it sounds like, then it should be alerted. Usually this involves bidding a suit that does not show length in that suit, or bidding no trumps when it does not indicate a desire to play in no trumps. It also includes a natural bid that has an unexpected HCP range. Examples: Transfer bids. Unusual No Trumps Multi 2 D opening. Pass or correct bids Weak jump responses Inverted minor raises. Self-alerting bids. Some bids are defined as self-alerting, meaning they do not require an actual alert, as they are obviously unusual. These are: Doubles and redoubles. All bids above 3 NT (except unusual high level openings, e.g. NAMYATS) Cue bid of opponents suit. 2 C response to a 1 NT opening bid. Asking. You can ask about any alerted bid, or unalerted bid, but only at your turn to bid or play. Most people only ask if the answer may affect their upcoming bid or play. When asking, ask in general terms, not using leading questions. So say: what does 2 C mean?, not does 2 C show clubs?. (which could be interpreted as code for I have clubs ). At the end of an auction that had multiple alerts, say: explain the auction please, rather than asking about one specific alerted bid. Answering: You are required to explain your partnership agreement, nothing more. Try not to guess. Just say: I don t know or I don t remember, or It is undiscussed. Again, do not offer a possible explanation, or how you are going to take it. Partner fails to alert, mis-alerts, or mis-explains. Happens all the time, right? You must stay shtum at the moment, Then..At auction s end, with your side declaring: Before the opening lead, draw your opponents attention to the problem Explain what you think went wrong. If your side is defending: You can say nothing until the end of play, at which point you should identify the issue. In both situations, it may be wise to call the director. Pre-alerting: At the start of each round you should [re-alert your opponents to any unusual convention that they may need to arrange a defence against. Main examples are: Transfer responses to 1 C Very unusual 2-level openings (e.g. 2 NT for the minors) the Multi scheme does not need a pre-alert, as it s so prevalent. A system other than some form of Standard American: e.g. Precision, Acol. Bill Jacobs VBA.
