1 Special Cards Metropole Metropolis (2) Politik & Intrige Cards (Central Card) The key feature of the Metropole is that it creates additional building sites where you may place Units (Cannons, Knights, Dragons, or Fleets). The new sites are vertically adjacent to the Regions surrounding the Metropole. The Metropole is played from the hand and put atop an existing City. This City, however, must already have a Kirche (Church) or Rathaus (City Hall) on one of its building sites. The Metropole may not be put on a Citadel from the Zauberer & Drachen Theme set. The construction of a Metropole does not cost Only one Metropole may be established in each principality. Units which are placed adjacent to the Regions of a Metropole belong only to the Metropole and not to nearby Settlements or Cities. Cards which refer to Cities (for example, Seuche (Plague), Großer Bürgermeister (Governor), Bordell (Brothel), etc.) also apply to the Metropole. In Tournament Play you may take two Metropoles into your deck (for example, to inrease your odds of encountering one quickly), but you may still have only one Metrolpole in your Principality. The Feuerteufel (Pyromaniac) cannot be played against a Metropole. Prerequisite: Kirche (Church) or Rathaus (City Hall) in the City which the Metropole replaces. Territorial Upgrade Cards (Green Text Fields) Ordensburg Knights Keep (1) Mission Mission (1) All Knights who have a base cost of 4 or more resources are immune to the following: Bürgerkrieg (Civil War) Bestechung (Bribery). Burgfraülein Imelda (Lady Imelda of the Castle) This card protects neither Dragons nor Cannons; it protects only Knights who cost more than three Knights protected by an Ordensburg can, however, be attacked by Schwarzer Ritter (Black Knight) cards. It is the Knights printed construction costs which determines whether the Ordensburg applies. Construction cost reductions (for example due to the Burg (Castle) card) are not considered. Reduce by one resource of your choice the building costs of the following sacral Buildings: Kirche (Church) Kloster (Cloister) Kathedrale (Cathedral) Ordensburg (Knights Keep) Bischofssitz (Bishop s Seat) The Heilig Stätte (Holy Place) does not count as a sacral Building. 2 Heilige Stätte Holy Place (1) Vogtei Prefecture (1) At the end of your turn, you may choose to exchange one card you have just drawn. Place it under a Development stack and draw another. This applies to replenishing one s hand and to exchanging a card. Put the card you replace at the bottom of the stack from which you draw its replacement. If, at the end of your turn, you are to draw more than one card, you must decide whether to replace one card before drawing the next. You may not draw multiple cards and then decide which to exchange. Example: You must draw 2 cards. After you draw the first, you may exchange it. If you do not, but instead draw the second card, you can no longer exchange the first card. Now you may only exchange the second. Prerequisite: Kirche (Church). City Upgrade Cards (Red Text Fields) Bordell Brothel (1) The Bordell is placed on an available building site in one of your opponent s Cities. The Bordell causes all Knights in your opponent s principality to lose one Strength Point each not just the Knights in the same City as the Bordell. Dragons and Cannons are unaffected by the Bordell. Your opponent can try to destroy the Bordell with a Feuerteufel (Pyromaniac) if he does not have a Feuerwache (Fire Station) in the same City. The Pfandleiher (Pawnbroker) card from the Handel & Wandel Theme set may not be used on the Bordell. With each Production die-roll you receive an additional resource of your choice. If your opponent rolls? on the Event die, lose all of your Wool and Ore and place the Vogtei beneath a Development stack. If you roll? on the Event die, you don t lose the Vogtei and you don t lose any When your opponent rolls? you lose all Wool and Ore except those stored on Resource Storage cards (Naturalien- Speicher and Schatzkammer from the Handel & Wandel Theme set). If the Haus der Republik (House of Burgesses) is in your principality, you may not build the Vogtei. The reverse also applies. If the Vogtei is in your principality, you may not build the Haus der Republik. Of course, you can choose to remove either Building to enable the placement of the other. Haus der Republik House of Burgesses (1) Either adjacent Region will produce 3 resources when its number is rolled on the Production die. When the Production die results in the number printed either adjacent Region, rotate the die-rolled Region up to three If the Haus der Republik is in your principality, you may not build the Vogtei (Prefecture). The reverse also applies. If the Vogtei is in your principality, you may not build the Haus der Republik. Of course, you can choose to remove either Building to enable the placement of the other. 3 Geheimbund Secret Society (1) Bischofssitz Bishopric (1) Card text: You may use the characteristics of one of the following of your opponent s Buildings: Rathaus (City Hall) Bibliothek (Library) Kirche (Church) Universität (University). All characteristics of the chosen Building except its Victory Point will be available to you. You gain any advantages, can play cards with that Building as a prerequisite, benefit from Events, etc. When you place the Geheimbund, you must announce which of your opponent s Buildings you will target for use. Your selection applies until the end of the game. The target Building may only be changed if the original target Building is removed from your opponent s principality, in which case you may choose a different target Building. If your opponent ceases to have any of the four permitted Buildings in his principality, the Geheimbund has no effect until your opponent builds such a Building. As always, you have the option of removing the Geheimbund. Example: If you chose as the target of your Geheimbund your opponent s Universität (University), you would be able to hold an additional card and you would be able to play cards which require that you have a Universität. Also, if the Fortschritt (Progress) Event card were drawn you would receive a resource for the Universität. Example: If the Geheimbund were to use the characteristics of your opponent s Kirche (Church), then all Fleets and Knights in the same City as your Geheimbund would be protected from a Bürgerkrieg (Civil War). Also, if the Kirchenfest (Holy Day) Event card were drawn you would receive two The Geheimbund will continue to take advantage of the benefits of its target even if your opponent is denied those benefits. For example, if your opponent plays the Pfandleiher (Pawnbroker) on the target, or if you play a Hexe (Witch s Hex) on the target, your opponent would lose the use of the target s attributes but you would not lose its benefits. Similarly, when you build the Geheimbund, if you name as its target a Building whose attributes are presently anavailable to your opponent, you may still take advantage of those attributes. The power of the Church provides you with additional Gold income as punishment for your opponent s actions. Each time your opponent uses an Action card, a Magic Action card or a Magic Book, your opponent must pay you 1 Gold. The Feuerteufel (Pyromaniac) does not work against this Building. If your Regions can t accommodate the Gold, you receive nothing. Prerequisite: Kloster (Cloister) or Kirche (Church). Theater Theater (1) You may hold two additional cards in your hand. Worth 1 Victory Point. You may build the Theater only if you already have a Bibliothek (Library) in your principality. Combinations of Kloster (Cloister), Bibliothek (Library), Theater and Universität (University) are possible. For example: Cloister: 4 hand cards allowed Kloster + Bibliothek: 5 hand cards allowed Kloster + Bibliothek + Theater: 7 hand cards allowed If you lose one of these Buildings, the number of cards you may hold is reduced. If this happens when it is not your turn, you must immediately put your surplus cards under a development stack; otherwise, you may wait to do so until you end your turn. 4 Brauerei Brewery (1) Gericht Courthouse (1) For 1 Gold you can rotate this card 180. Whatever is on the left (2 Strength Points or 2 Commerce Points) is what currently applies. When you initially place the Brauerei in your principality, you may select which symbol faces left without paying 1 Gold. When you select 2 Commerce Points, the two Mill symbols will be bottom left. When you select 2 Strength Points, the Iron Glove symbol will be top left. The Strength Points are valid even if you do not have Knights in your principality. You may pay one Gold to rotate the Brauerei only once per turn. Event Cards (Blue Text Fields) Bettelmönche Mendicant Friar (1) The player who controls the Mill token must donate 2 resources of his choice to his opponent. He must choose resources which his opponent s Regions can accommodate. If he has only one resource, then he donates it. If his opponent cannot accommodate any available resources, he does not lose any You are only affected by the die event Robber Assault if you have more than 10 Gute Nachbarschaft Good Neighborhood (1) The top cards of all the Development stacks are turned face-up. Applies to all development card stacks, with the exception of Development stacks banned by Kirchenbann (Religious Prohibition): In Extended Basic Play: all shared stacks. In Tournament Play: all personal stacks. Kirchenfest Holy Day (1) Players with a Kirche (Church) receive 2 resources of their choice. Players with a Kathedrale (Cathedral) receive 4 resources of their choice. Applies to both players. Players with a Kirche (Church) and a Kathedrale (Cathedral) receive 6 resources of their choice. 5 Action Cards (Yellow Text Fields) Archivar Archivist (1) Take up to 6 cards from the top of any one Development stack. Read them and sort them at will. Put them back face-down on the same stack in any order. If the selected stack has six or fewer cards, the entire stack may be sorted. Prerequisite: Rathaus (City Hall) Diplomat Diplomat (1) Retrieve any 1 card from the discard pile. You may search the discard pile in order to find the desired card. You may not change the order of the cards in the discard pile. In Tournament Play you may retrieve a card only from your own discard pile. Prerequisite: Rathaus (City Hall) Kanzler Chancellor (2) Select a development card stack and draw the top three cards. You may use these cards immediately in your turn. At the end of your turn, check the number of cards in your hand. Place surplus cards at the bottom of a Development stack. At the end of your turn, if you do not need to replenish your hand, you may still exchange a card as usual. Bestechung Bribery (2) Pay 3 Gold to take any 1 Knight from your opponent s principality and place it on an available building site in your principality. The Gold you pay does not go to your opponent. You may not take a Knight without placing it in your principality. If your opponent has an Ordensburg (Knight s Keep), you may not take any Knights under its protection. This card does not affect Dragons and Cannons. Hochzeit Wedding (2) Your opponent must give you as much Gold as you can accommodate in your Regions. Prerequisite: Kirche (Church) or Kathedrale (Cathedral) Ratssitzung Council Meeting (2) Place two cards from your hand under a Development stack of your choice. Search through this or another Deveolpment stack and take two new cards. Do not change the order of the cards remaining in the stack. You may use these cards immediately in your turn. 6 Kirchenbann Religious Prohibition (2) Put this card on top of any Development stack or discard pile. The stack on which you place this card is unavailable to your opponent. Your opponent must pay 3 Gold if he wishes to discard this card. The Gold he pays does not go to you. In the Extended Basic Play, you still have access to this stack. The discard pile for events cannot be banned. In Tournament Play, put this card on one of your opponent s personal development stacks or discard piles. You have no access to these, of course. Prerequisite: Kirche (Church) or Kathedrale (Cathedral). Medicus Doctor (2) Play this when the Seuche (Plague) Event card is drawn. The Seuche (Plague) Event has no effect on any of your Cities. If the Seuche (Plague) Event occurs, you may immediately play this card even if it is not your turn. Card Descriptions: Politik & Intrige Page 6

7 Read Me In addition to this document, there are 7 others which you may find useful: Instructions Base Set Card Descriptions Base Set Instructions Theme Sets Card Descriptions Handel & Wandel Card Descriptions Ritter & Händler Card Descriptions Wissenschaft & Fortschritt Card Descriptions Zauberer & Drachen All of these documents are American English translations of the instructions and card descriptions for the German edition of Die Siedler von Catan: Das Kartenspiel. Instructions for use: All of the documents have been sized so that they can be cut to fit inside the game packaging. The final size of each page should be 7.25 inches high by 7.5 inches wide. Cut one half inch off the left side, the right side and the top of each page. Cut 3.25 inches off the bottom of each page. I recommend that you print the instructions in color. When you want to find a card description while playing the game, color images will greatly facilitate doing so. Credits: These documents are based largely on translations done by Peter Card, Philip Homatidis, Chris Farrell and Richard Ingram. Many, many thanks to them. After running into a few discrepancies between the different translations (as well as finding some card descriptions which left out significant bullet items), I decided to check the translations for all the sets against the German originals, sentence by sentence. I used Alta Vista s Babel Fish translator for most of it. When Babel Fish didn t yield clear enough results, I used Sail Labs T1 translator. Often this would offer a different enough translation that the intended meaning became clear. For individual words which neither translator could handle, I used the web-trans Dictionary at Clausthal University of Technology. Background for these translations: When I first got the game, I found myself trying to match the translated instructions with the diagrams and other graphics in the original German instructions booklets. To make it easier to learn the game, I scanned in the graphics and inserted them into the translations. One of the problems I ran into when I was learning the game was that Peter Card s translation of the Base game instructions used different names from Philip Homatidis s card labels (and both used different terminology from Chris Farrell s and Richard Ingram s translations of the Theme set instructions). I ve re-worked the translations so that the instructions for the various sets all use uniform terminology. I haven t seen Mayfair s English version of the Base set (the only English language set available at this time), so my choices for the card titles are arbitrary. I put English translation stickers on the cards from the Base set but I soon found that the stickers interfered with shuffling and that the stickers began to show signs of wear right away. Besides, I felt the stickers interfered with the aesthetics of the cards, and most of the cards depict symbols which make their purposes evident. I removed the stickers and set about learning to play without them. It turned out to be pretty easy, and I find mispronounced German card names more fun than the English translations. I put the German card titles first (followed in parentheses by their English translations) in order to facilitate looking up card descriptions by their German titles. This document is not a verbatim translation. It s not even new material, for the most part. While I did translate the original instructions sentence by sentence, I did so only to ensure that no significant points were misrepresented or omitted from the existing English instructions. Where necessary, I made changes. What items do I consider significant? Any item which might conceivably relate to gameplay.
