1 Ritter & Händler Cards Territorial Upgrade Cards (Green Text Fields) Bauernheer Militia (1) (Unit) Zollstation Customs Post (2) (Building) The Strength Points of the Bauernheer is equal to the number of Wheat resources in the adjacent Field Region(s). These Strength Points count even if you do not have any Knights in your principality. The Bauernheer is not unique (In Tournament Play, more than one Bauernheer is allowed.). Successful Year (Sun symbol), receive two Gold. The Gold you receive is in addition to the single resource (of your choice) which you normally receive for the Successful Year die-event. Your Stream Regions must be able to accommodate the Gold. If you can only accommodate one Gold, then you only receive one. Burg Castle (2) (Building) Turnierplatz Tournament Grounds (1) Whenever you place a new Knight or Cannon in your principality, it will cost one less resource than stated. With two Burg cards in your principality, Knights and Cannons cost two fewer resources. The Burg card can render some Units free to build. Every Knight in your principality receives an additional Tournament Point. A Cannon receives nothing. Roland der Hammer Roland the Hammer (1) (Unit - Knight) Bodo der Friedfertige Bodo the Peacemaker (1) (Unit - Knight) Card Text: The terror of all horses. A Knight has 2 abilities. Each is represented by a symbol with a number. The glove stands for strength. A Knight with a black 1 has a strength of 1. The helmet stands for skill in tournaments. A Knight with a red 7 has 7 Tournament Points. Card Text: In noble hopes for better times. A Knight has 2 abilities. Each is represented by a symbol with a number. The glove stands for strength. 2 Kaperflotte Battle Fleet (2) Successful Year (Sun symbol), receive one Gold for every Kaperflotte in your principality, assuming your Gold Stream Regions can accommodate them. When placing this card in your principality, you can destroy one of your opponent s Fleets (of any type). You choose which Fleet is destroyed. The destroyed Fleet does not return to your opponent s hand but is discarded. A Kaperflotte receives no Commerce Points if a Hafen (Harbor) is built. Walther der Sänger Walter the Singer (1) Card text: His lute is his sword. This troubadour is a Knight of a special type against which a Black Knight cannot be played. Walther has no Strength Points, but gains one if a Schmiede (Smithy) is in the principality. The helmet stands for skill in tournaments. Walther has 6 Tournament Points. Wachturm Watch Tower (1) If your opponent plays a Spion (Spy), throw the die. If you roll a 1 or a 2, the Spion has no effect. Your opponent must then discard his Spion. Event Cards (Blue Text Fields) Überfall Attack (2) If you control the Knight token, name three of your opponent s Buildings. Your opponent must take one of these three Buildings back into his hand. If your opponent has fewer than three Buildings, he still takes one back into his hand. Prerequisite: Control of the Knight token. Ertragreiches Jahr Productive Year (1) Every Region that borders on a Befestigtes Lager (Fortified Warehouse) gets one extra resource. Applies to both players. Regions which are adjacent to two Befestigtes Lager cards receive 2 resources. Naturally, Regions which already have 3 resources receive no more. Card Descriptions: Ritter & Händler Page 2

3 City Upgrade Cards (Red Text Fields) Große Handelsflotte Great Trading Fleet (2) You may exchange the resources of the two adjacent Regions at a 2:1 ratio. Combined with a Hafen (Harbor), the Große Handelsflotte is worth 3 Commerce Points. Palast Palace (1) Successful Year (Sun symbol), instead of receiving a new resource, you may choose to take a discarded card into your hand. You can search through the discard pile. If taking a card leads you to have too many cards in your hand, you must place one card beneath a Development stack at the end of your turn. You can even take back an Action card, a destroyed Fleet or a Knight seduced by Burgfräulein Imelda (Lady Imelda of the Castle). In Tournament Play the opponent s discard pile is off limits. Action Cards (Yellow Text Fields) Gewürzkarawane Spice Caravan (2) If you control the Mill token, immediately take 2 resources of your choice from your opponent. Of course, you may only take resources which your Regions can accommodate. Bankhaus Banking House (1) If you control the Mill token, you can take two resources from your opponent each time the Mill symbol appears on the Event die. You choose both resources. Naturally, you may only take resources which your Regions can accommodate. Großer Hafen Great Harbor (1) Doubles the Commerce Points of the following Buildings in your principality: Markt (Marketplace) Handelskontor (Counting House) Händlerzunft (Traders Guild) Burgfräulein Imelda Lady Imelda of the Castle (2) What Knight can resist the attractions of fair Burgfräulein Imelda? None! Your opponent must select a Knight in his principality and discard it. He may not take the Knight back to his hand, nor may he put it under a Development stack. He must put the Knight on the discard pile. Cannons are, of course, immune to the Burgfräulein s charms. Card Descriptions: Ritter & Händler Page 3

4 Inquisition Inquisition (2) This card is used only in Tournament Play. Your opponent must shuffle the cards in his hand with all of the cards from all four of his draw stacks. He must then form four roughly equal new draw stacks and draw from their tops to re-form his hand. Prerequisite: Kirche (Church) or Kloster (Cloister). Karawane Caravan (1) Convert your own resources. Trade in two resources of your choice (the same or different) for two others of your choice (also the same or different). Example: The player rotates his Forest card from 3 to 1 Timber, then rotates a Mountain and a Field by 1 unit each. Raubzug Brigand (1) Roll! On a 1-5, take two resources of your choice from your opponent. If you roll a 6, your opponent takes two resources of his choice from you. If your opponent only has one resource, you can only steal one. A resource can only be stolen if you can accommodate it in one of your Regions. Countered by: Bischof (Bishop) Grenzkonflikt Border Conflict (2) If you control the Knight token, you may exchange one of your Regions (of which you have at least two instances) with one of your opponent s Regions (of which he has at least two instances). You may not exchange Regions with Region Upgrades (for example, Wizards, Kunstschmiede, Schnapsbrennerei, Färberei). The resources on the exchanged Regions move with the Regions. The player who controls the Knight token initiates the exchange. The player who controls the Knight token determines both Regions to be exchanged. Important: There must be more than one occurrence of both Regions in their respective principalities. In other words, if your opponent has only one Mountains Region in his principality, you may not take that Region from him. Example: You possess 2 Field Regions, one of which has a Wheat resource and one of which has none. Your opponent has two Stream Regions, one of which has three Gold. You play Grenzkonflikt and give your opponent the Field Region which has no Wheat and you take from your opponent the Stream Region which has 3 Gold. If an exchanged Region card was under the influence of a doubling card, for example Sägewerk (Sawmill), the doubling card may cease to be of benefit. Your opponent had hard luck in this case. 5 Read Me In addition to this document, there are 7 others which you may find useful: Instructions Base Set Card Descriptions Base Set Instructions Theme Sets Card Descriptions Handel & Wandel Card Descriptions Politik & Intrige Card Descriptions Wissenschaft & Fortschritt Card Descriptions Zauberer & Drachen All of these documents are American English translations of the instructions and card descriptions for the German edition of Die Siedler von Catan: Das Kartenspiel. Instructions for use: All of the documents have been sized so that they can be cut to fit inside the game packaging. The final size of each page should be 7.25 inches high by 7.5 inches wide. Cut one half inch off the left side, the right side and the top of each page. Cut 3.25 inches off the bottom of each page. I recommend that you print the instructions in color. When you want to find a card description while playing the game, color images will greatly facilitate doing so. Credits: These documents are based largely on translations done by Peter Card, Philip Homatidis, Chris Farrell and Richard Ingram. Many, many thanks to them. After running into a few discrepancies between the different translations (as well as finding some card descriptions which left out significant bullet items), I decided to check the translations for all the sets against the German originals, sentence by sentence. I used Alta Vista s Babel Fish translator for most of it. When Babel Fish didn t yield clear enough results, I used Sail Labs T1 translator. Often this would offer a different enough translation that the intended meaning became clear. For individual words which neither translator could handle, I used the web-trans Dictionary at Clausthal University of Technology. Background for these translations: When I first got the game, I found myself trying to match the translated instructions with the diagrams and other graphics in the original German instructions booklets. To make it easier to learn the game, I scanned in the graphics and inserted them into the translations. One of the problems I ran into when I was learning the game was that Peter Card s translation of the Base game instructions used different names from Philip Homatidis s card labels (and both used different terminology from Chris Farrell s and Richard Ingram s translations of the Theme set instructions). I ve re-worked the translations so that the instructions for the various sets all use uniform terminology. I haven t seen Mayfair s English version of the Base set (the only English language set available at this time), so my choices for the card titles are arbitrary. I put English translation stickers on the cards from the Base set but I soon found that the stickers interfered with shuffling and that the stickers began to show signs of wear right away. Besides, I felt the stickers interfered with the aesthetics of the cards, and most of the cards depict symbols which make their purposes evident. I removed the stickers and set about learning to play without them. It turned out to be pretty easy, and I find mispronounced German card names more fun than the English translations. I put the German card titles first (followed in parentheses by their English translations) in order to facilitate looking up card descriptions by their German titles. This document is not a verbatim translation. It s not even new material, for the most part. While I did translate the original instructions sentence by sentence, I did so only to ensure that no significant points were misrepresented or omitted from the existing English instructions. Where necessary, I made changes. What items do I consider significant? Any item which might conceivably relate to gameplay.
