51 Reference reference LED Technology provides designers with many distinct advantages over other light sources including size, efficiency and color, provided the LED is designed into the fixture properly. A system approach to fixture design is required to showcase the advantages LED technology has to offer. The key parts of the luminaire design include thermal management, optical performance, color consistency, electrical management and the LED chip itself. If not managed properly, as a complete system, the benefits of this technology will be lost. To maximize the benefits of this technology, all the key parts of the system must be properly blended. 51

52 Standards and Terms reference Standards: As with all new technologies, standards must be developed for consistency in the marketplace. Key standards recently accepted for LED products include LM (IESNA Approved Method for the Electrical and Photometric Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products) and LM (IESNA Approved Method for Measuring Lumen Maintenance of LED Light Sources). Terms: Binning: The process of separating LED chips based on their various characteristics and assigning them a specific bin code after matching similar chips. Small bins result in better color consistency. CCT: Correlated Color Temperature; A measure of the color appearance of a white light source. CCT is measured on the Kelvin absolute temperature scale. White lighting products are most commonly available from 2700 K (warm white), 4000 K (neutral white) and 5000 K (cool white). Chromaticity: Description of the quality of a color regardless of its luminance. Defined by x and y coordinates on the standard chromaticity scale developed by the CIE. CRI: Color Rendering Index; A measure of how a light source renders colors of objects, compared to a reference light source. CRI is given as a number from 0 to 100, with 100 referencing the best color. Footcandle (fc): The unit of measurement of illuminance incident on a surface. Heat Sink: Thermally conductive material attached to the printed circuit board on which the LED is mounted. Junction Temperature (T j ): Temperature within the LED device; key to ensuring long life of LEDs. L70 (or L 70 ): Shorthand for 70% of initial lumen output; stated conversely, it indicates 70% lumen maintenance. LED: Light Emitting Diode. A solid-state semi-conductor that converts electrical energy directly into light. Lumen (lm): The unit measurement of luminous flux equal to the light emitted in a solid angle by a uniform point source of one candela intensity. 52

53 Terms reference Lumen Depreciation: The decrease in lumen output that occurs as a lamp is operated. Because LEDs can continue to operate at very low light levels, LED life is usually defined as lumen depreciation to a particular point, such as 70% of initial lumens. Luminous Efficacy: The ratio of luminous flux to watts/power; how well a light source provides visible light from a given amount of electricity. Luminous Flux: The total amount of illumination emitted by a light source; measured in lumens. Lux: The metric unit of illuminance. One lux is one lumen per square meter: lm/m2 ma: Milliampere; unit of electrical current PC: Phosphor Conversion; White light can be produced by a blue, violet or near-uv LED coated with yellow or multi-chromatic phosphors. The combined light emission appears white. RGB: Red, Green, Blue; the three primary colors that make up white light. One way to create white light with LEDs is to mix the three primary colors of light. Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) Curves: A plot of the level of energy at each wavelength of a light source. SSL: Solid State Lighting; Umbrella term for semiconductors used to convert electricity into light. 53

54 Color reference Warm Neutral Cool The Right Color Light: When talking about white light sources such as LEDs, the terms warm and cool are used. White light LEDs are binned into three general categories: warm, neutral and cool. White light with a hint of yellow-like candlelight is called warm white. The color temperature of warm white is below 3500 K. Warm white enhances reds and oranges, dulls blues, and adds a yellow tint to whites and greens. Neutral white has a midrange color temperature of 3500 K K. This light enhances most colors equally and does not emphasize either yellow or blue. Bluish white, like moonlight or snow, is considered cool white. The color temperature is above 4000 K. Cool white enhances blues, dulls reds and imparts a bluish tint to whites and greens. 54
