4 What are Cryptic Crossword Puzzles The easiest answer to that question is that cryptic crossword puzzles are simply the most challenging and yet most entertaining types of crossword puzzles found on the planet. Now that we have that cleared up, let's take a closer look at this type of crossword puzzle and how it works. We can differentiate a cryptic crossword puzzle from a standard crossword puzzle by saying that each clue is a tiny puzzle all by itself. Rather than just reading a straightforward clue and knowing the answer (i.e. second wife of John Lennon answer: Yoko Ono), the puzzle solver must first determine the answer to the word puzzle found in the clue. (a wicked thing answer: candle) You should know that these types of crossword puzzles originated in the United Kingdom during the 1920s. At first, they included only strictly definitions but soon added puzzles including anagrams, wordplays and more. By the 1960s, the puzzles and the people who created them had fully developed the genre. To this day, they remain extremely popular in the United Kingdom. They are also very popular in Canada and especially in Australia. They can only be rarely found in the United States and even then only in certain magazines and a few

5 newspapers. Now and then you might find a slightly cryptic clue in a typical American crossword, but that is even rarer still. Interestingly, though, puzzles very similar to cryptic crosswords can be found in many other countries all over the world. We can divide up cryptic crosswords into two categories: basic and advanced (variety). Each category has a different set of guidelines for both forming and solving the puzzle. One guideline that applies to all of them is that the setters (the people who create them) must follow a rule of basic fairness when writing their clues. Basic cryptic crosswords are generally placed on grids 15 squares by 15 squares. The answers to the clues are usually placed directly into the puzzle without any manipulating. Although different publications have slightly different guidelines, in general, most of them require at least half of the letters to be part of more than one word. These letters are referred to as checked. Advanced cryptic crosswords tend to appear on smaller grids of 12 squares by 12 squares. Most of the time, about three quarters of the letters are checked. The grids themselves often have no black squares to delineate where words start or end. Instead, there are simply thick bar lines.
