Our first stop for the day was at Anavilandewa wet land which is a RAMSAR protected area. We encounter Lesser Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Asian Open Bill, Black-headed Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, Indian Pond Heron, Purple Heron, Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, Little Egret, Spot-billed Pelican, Little Commorant, Indian Commorant, Darter, Brahminy Kite, White-breasted Water hen, Purple Swamp hen, Common Coot, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Red-wattled lapwing, Whiskered Tern, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Indian Swiftlet, Asian Palm Swift, House Crow, Barn Swallow, White-bellied Drongo and Yellow billed Babbler. After spending a very productive one hour here we left to Anuradhapura where our hotel for next two days is located. We reached the hotel at 7.40 pm and after the checklist we had dinner and went to bed.
2 Day 02 Monday 22 nd December At 06.00am we went to Nuwara Wewa Lake bed which is just 200m away from the hotel and found many dry zone water birds including Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, Indian Peafowl, Black-crowned Night Heron, Grey Heron, Shikra, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Indian Thick-knee, Black-winged Stilt, Rock Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Sri lanka Green Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Asian Koel, Greater Coucal, Collared Scops Owl, Little Swift, Indian Roller, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, White-throated Kingfisher, Brown-headed Barbet, Copper Smith Barbet and Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill. It was drizzling until 7.00am as we return to the hotel for breakfast. At 08.30am we went out to see the UNESCO world heritage site of Anuradhapura which was the first capital of Sri Lanka. We visited the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, the great stupa of Ruvanveli and the Jethavana the tallest brick structure of the ancient world and surrounding monastery complex. We saw many more stupa moonstones, guard stones and many other man made wonders of a bygone civilization. We also visited the Abhayagiri complex where we found another colossal stupa and many Buddha statues followed by the impressive Kuttam pokuna or twin pond. We returned to the hotel for lunch at 12.30pm At 2.30pm we went to Mihinthale sanctuary and encounter Indian Pitta, Sri Lanka Woodshrike, Small Minivet, Brown Shrike, Common Iora, Black-hooded Oriole, Large-billed Crow, Black Drongo, Richard s Pipit, Paddy field Pipit, Red-vented Bulbul, Ashy Prinia, Plain Prinia, Asian Paradise-flycatcher, Common Myna, Oriental Magpie Robin, Indian Robin, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, Purple Sunbird, White-rumped Munia and Scaly-breasted Munia. We also see Mouse Deer, Toque Macaque, Grey Langur, and Purple-faced Leaf Monkey here. We returned to the hotel at 5.15pm as it started to rain. We did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 03 Tuesday 23 rd December At 0600 we went to Nuwara Wewa Lake in the morning to see water birds again. We see Little Grebe, Great Commorant, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Besra, Crested Serpent Eagle, Common Moorhen, Common Greenshank, Alexandrine Parakeet, Jacobin Cuckoo, Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Green Bee-eater, and Stork-billed Kingfisher. At 8.40am we checked out of the hotel and started to move toward Sigiriya world heritage site. Before Sigiriya we stop at the nearby Mahakanadarawa reservoir for more birding. We see many manmade lakes which are over 2000 years old. We reached Hotel Sigiriya at pm and had lunch. At 3.00pm we went to the Sigiriya sanctuary by the lake for bird observation and encounter Common Kingfisher, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Golden-fronted Leaf Bird, Sri Lanka Swallow, Ashy Wood Swallow, White-browed Bulbul, Grey-breasted Prinia, Common Tailorbird, Zitting Cisticola, White-browed Fantail, Long-billed Sunbird and Oriental White-eye. We came back to the hotel by 5.15pm. We did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 04 Wednesday 24 th December We started the day at 6.00am amidst heavy rain to do some birding around the area and encounter Peregrine Falcon, Indian Cuckoo and Blue-faced Malkoha. We returned to the hotel and after breakfast we left to Sigiriya Rock to do some birding around the foothills of the rock. Our walk was cut short by the rains and we had to head back to the hotel by 11.30am. We started again at 2.30pm after lunch and visted the Sigiriya Museum and the Water Gardens of the ancient palace complex. We see Brown Fish Owl, Brown Hawk Owl, Large Cuckooshrike, Jerdon s Leafebird, Jungle Prinia, Brown-capped Babbler, Orange-headed Thrush, Palebilled Flowerpecker and Black-headed Munia before we return to the hotel for the night. We did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program.
3 Day 05 Thursday 25 th December We checked out of the hotel at 8.30am and proceeded to our next hotel in Kandy. En-route we visited the Dambulla Rock temple and stopped at noon for lunch at a Spice Garden. We observe many birds around the area including Wooly-necked Stork, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Oriental Honey-buzzard, Emerald Dove, Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, Jerdon s Nightjar, Crimson-fronted Barbet and Lesser Goldenback. As we drove on to the city of Kandy we experience the change in the climate as the temperature drops welcoming us in to the hill country. En-route we see Scarlet Minivet, Yellow-browed Bulbul, White-rumped Shama, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Great Tit and House Sparrow. At 3.00pm we visited the Tooth Relic Temple and observe the devotees offering their prayers while preparation for the evening ceremony was taking place. We checked in to the hotel at 5.00pm and did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 06 Friday 26 th December After an early breakfast amidst light rain we proceed to Udawatta forest reserve to see the wet zone birds which inhabit this ancient forest. We encounter Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Greenish Warbler, Green Warbler, Large-billed Leafe Warbler, Lesser Hill Myna, Tickell s Blue Flycatcher and Velvet-fronted Nuthatch and Barking Deer. After Udawatta forest we leave to the Royal botanical gardens of Peradeniya which was once the pleasure garden of the Kandian Kings. We see many avian in the gardens and then head back to the hotel for lunch. In the evening we visited a cultural show with various dance performance and instrumental performance. After reaching our hotel we did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 07 Saturday 27 th December Once again the day started with heavy rain as we left for Nuwara Eliya at 8.30 am. En-route we visited a tea factory and observed how tea is plucked from the plantations and processed until it is packed for distribution around the world. We reached Nuwara Eliya late in the afternoon and on our way to the hotel we see the Gregory s Lake and many tea plantations. In the evening we visited Seetha Eliya and Bomburuelle for more bird watching and came back to the hotel by 6.00pm as the rain started to increase. After reaching our hotel we did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 08 Sunday 28 th December At 5.00am we left for Horton Plains national park and managed to reach the park entrance quite early. We encounter Common Kestrel, Black Eagle, Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Crimson-back Woodpecker, Forest Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, Blyth s Reed Warbler, Sri lanka Scimitar Babbler, Indian Black Bird, Indian Blue Robin and Pied Bushchat. We see some Sambar Deer s and Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys too. We returned to the hotel for a late lunch and planned to visit Victoria Park in the evening. At 4.20pm we came to the Victoria Park and found a Kashmir Flycatcher and a Common Sand-piper. There were colorful flowers and many other birds also found at the park. After reaching our hotel we did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program.
4 Day 09 Monday 29 th December At 6.30am we left to Bomuruella forest reserve for birding and it was drizzling lightly. We encounter Mountain Hawk Eagle & Pied Kingfisher here along with many other birds. We left the hotel at 8.30 after breakfast and headed out to Tissamaharama via Ella where we stopped for lunch at the Ella rest house. At the rest house we see many birds around the area and enjoy the scenic view. After lunch we proceeded to Debarawewa tank for more birding and encounter Painted Stork, Yellow Bittern, Common Red Shank, White-winged Tern and Tawny-bellied Babbler. At 6.00pm we reached the Safari hotel for the overnight stay and we did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing of next day program. Day 10 Tuesday 30 th December At 5.30am we left to Bundala national park and found many water birds and waders there. We encounter Osprey, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Little Ringed Plover, Kentish Plover, Lesser Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Pin-tailed Snipe, Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Small Pratincole, Gull-billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Common Hawk-Cuckoo, Indian Nightjar, Common Hoopoe, Oriental Skylark, Ashy Crowned Sparrow Lark, Clamorous Reed Warbler, Dark-fronted Babbler, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Brahminy Starling & Rosy Starling. We checked out of our hotel at 12.15pm and headed out to Yala for our next 2 nights stay. At around 4.30pm we go out to the hotel garden for a gentle walk and for some birding. We did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 11 Wednesday 31 st December We started the day at 5.30am after tea and headed out to the Yala National Park for our first day of Safari. We encounter Barred Buttonquail, Striated Heron, Lesser Cuckoo, Ashy Drongo, Baya Weaver and Indian Silverbill. We also encounter the Golden Jackal, Rudy Mongoose, Asian Elephant, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Water Buffalo, Grizzled Giant Squirrel and Wild Boar. 7 members of the group left the park with Thushara to do a half day excursion around the hotel area and the remaining stayed with Chaminda in the park until 6.30pm. As today was New Years Eve the hotel had organized a Gala Dinner at which we enjoyed some music and festive food. After the briefing we head back to our rooms for the night. Day 12 Thursday 1 st January After breakfast we checked out of the hotel at 8.30am and left for Embilipitiya. We arrived at our next hotel at noon and after checking in had lunch. After lunch we left for a half day safari at Udawalawe National Park where we encounter Black-winged Kite, Green Sandpiper, Marshall s Iora, Blyth s Pipit and Jerdon s Bushlark along with many sightings of Asian Elephants, Spotted Deer and Wild Buffalo. We reached the hotel after the Safari at around 6.30pm and meet up for the checklist at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program.
5 Day 13 Friday 2 nd January After breakfast at around 8.30am we left for Singharaja Rainforest and en-route visited the Rakwana hills for some light birding and also visited a small Clove plantation. We reached the next hotel at around 1.00pm and had lunch after checking in. At around 4.00pm in the evening we had a small walk around the hotel gardens and walked up to the village where the foothills of the Rainforest begins. We were lucky to encounter 4 endemics the Sri Lankan Spurfowl, Layard s Parakeet, Yellow-fronted Barbet and Sri Lanka Hill Myna. We also see Jerdon s Baza, Booted Eagle, Black-capped Bulbul and Black Bulbul. We did our check list for the day at 7.30pm and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 14 Saturday 3 rd January We started our day at 6.30am and head out to the Singharaja forest after breakfast. We encounter the Redfaced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, Sri Lanka Frog-mouth, Brown-backed Needletail, Lesser Yellownape, Sri Lanka Bluemagpie and Sri Lanka Crested Drongo. We returned to the hotel for a late lunch at 3.00pm and head back in to the Rainforest to explore another part of the forest where we encounter Black-naped Monarch, Orange-billed Babbler, Ashy-headed Laughing Thrush, White-faced Starling, Spot-winged Thrush, Brown-breasted Flycatcher and Legge s Flowerpecker. We did our check list for the day at 7.30 and had dinner after the briefing for the next day program. Day 15 Sunday 4 th January Once again after an early breakfast we head out for a 3 hour birding session around Singharaja and encounter many wet zone birds which we had seen before along with Lesser Crested Tern, Sandwich Tern, Banded Bay Cuckoo and the Chestnut-backed Owlet in its roosting site. After lunch we left for Colombo enroute stopping to see birds and sites along way. At 5.30pm we reach the hotel and Perry was there to greet us once again before we checked in for our overnight stay in Colombo. In the late evening we head out to the hotel garden premises to see the Brown Hawk Owl birds before we meet for the checklist and dinner. Day 16 Monday 5 th January In the morning after breakfast Perry met the group at the reception and sent the group to the Airport in time to catch the flight back. Total number of Birds seen 227
