YOUR TOUR LEADERS Scott Tucker, the creator of the documentary television series Scott Tucker s Expedition New England, has inspired many of us, with his humor, compassion and enthusiasm, to protect and preserve our planet s resources. As a documentary photographer coming out of college in 1993, it was painful for Scott to learn that no one was looking to hire for this trade. After eight struggling years creating sculpture and still images, Scott bought a video camera to document the birth of Ava s, his wife, and his first child, Daphne. He was hooked to video! Scott found video to be an explosion of color, sound, and motion all mixed in one. Scott s training with amphibians and reptiles has come primarily by serving as an officer of the Connecticut Herpetologists League, private field study, and presentations to many thousands of children and their families across Connecticut at nature centers and schools. Now, a documentary film maker, his first two short s captured the eye of judges in film festivals located in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Canada. Currently in the production of his 85 th episode of Scott Tucker s Expedition New England television series, he intertwines everyday family life with his ten year old daughter, Daphne, and five year old son, Race, into every wildlife encounter imaginable. From the breeding activities of Citronella Ants in the back yard, to snorkeling with freshwater fish in a local river, it s unlike anything you ll see on mainstream television. Presently Scott and Daphne make regular appearances on WTNH television to raise awareness of local wildlife and the challenges it faces. Additionally, Scott has gained vast environmental experience by serving on the Haddam Conservation Commission, helping to craft a conservation plan and program for landowners to protect development rights. Scott attended Syracuse University and the University of New Haven in the 1980 s and graduated with a degree in Studio Art-Photography from Southern Connecticut State University in He holds SDI Advanced Scuba Certification. Scott is President & Founder of Expedition Earth Productions Inc. and is responsible for filming, editing, writing, and hosting of the TV series Expedition New England. Scott works full time for Empire Paving, Inc., North Haven, CT where he is a project manager. He lives in Madison, CT with Ava, his wife and Daphne and Race, their children. Scott will be an outstanding leader for this tour. His energy and enthusiasm are equaled by few.
The Galapagos Archipelago is a unique world heritage site. Ever since Charles Darwin s famous voyage, it has provided a wealth of information and inspiration for people throughout the world. Today the Enchanted Islands continue to play an important role in our understanding of life on earth. Connecticut Audubon Society GALAPAGOS ITINERARY March 2-11, 2013 Day One Evening transfer from Quito Airport to San Jorge Eco- Lodge. See description of the lodge under the Pre-Tour Extension. Day Two This morning, we fly from Quito to the Galápagos and begin our exciting week of discovery on board one of three identical private yachts, the Eric, Flamingo, or Letty. Upon arrival to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND, our crew awaits us at the airport to escort you to your anchored yacht. After the welcome briefing, buffet lunch, and safety drill, we set sail for Playa Ochoa where we have your first wet-landing. Here, we can test our snorkeling equipment and at the same time swim with a small colony of sea lion. Behind the beach, there is a tidal lagoon where bird watching is good and where one should keep an eye out for the rare Chatham Mockingbird. At sunset, cruise around Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido), a vertical tuff cone formation that abruptly rises-up almost 500 feet, strait out of the ocean. On the cliffs, one can spot Bluefooted Booby, Nazca Booby, and Magnificent Frigatebird. Day Three Spend the entire day on TOWER ISLAND (Genovesa), considered to be one of the best islands in Galapagos for finding birds.
This morning, after a dry-landing at Prince Philip s Steps, look for Red-footed Booby nesting in Palo Santo Trees and Nazca Booby nesting along the trails. In the open lava fields, observers find thousands of Whitevented Storm-Petrel as they enter there nest holes. If lucky, one may see the elusive Short-eared Owl. After the walk, kayaks are available to those who would like to paddle along the shoreline. Look for the beautiful Red-billed Tropicbird, usually found in the crevices of the cliff. In the afternoon, enjoy a wet-landing at Darwin Bay, a coral sand beach where Swallow-tailed Gull and Lava Gull gather near the tidal pools. Enter a forest of Optuntia cactus and mangrove, where colonies of Great Frigatebird nest. Males inflate their red throat-pouches to attract females as they fly overhead. The trail leads through a rich intertidal zone where one can find a wide diversity of wildlife. After the walk, travelers can swim and snorkel with sea lions from the beach in these warmer, northern waters. Day Four This morning, we visit Las Bachas, which is the Spanish translation for barges. There is a long stretch of a soft, white sand beach and interior lagoons where we find Greater Flamingo. Also, there is a wonderful chance to snorkel from the beach. In the afternoon, expect a dry-landing at North Seymour, a small geological uplift. Follow a trail that leads to Swallow-tailed Gull, Blue-footed Booby, and the endemic Land Iguana. Visit the largest colony of Magnificent Frigatebird found in Galapagos. As we stroll along the beach, one finds Marine Iguana and sea lion body surfing the northern swells. After the walk, there is a snorkeling opportunity offered in deeper water. Day Five This morning, we have a semi-wet-landing at Punta Espinoza, FERNANDINA, the youngest and most pristine island in Galapagos. Recent lava flows, formed by an active volcano, stretch their way around the coast. Hundreds of Marine Iguana, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems where resident bulls carefully
guard their territory. Flightless Cormorant build their nests on the point and Galapagos Hawk fly overhead. After lunch, cross the Bolivar Channel where the diligent sea watchers often spot whale and dolphin riding the bow wave. This afternoon, enjoy a dry-landing at Tagus Cove, located on the western island of ISABELA. Six volcanoes flowed together and formed the largest island in Galapagos. During the walk, participants discover a salt-water lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields, and volcanic formations. Graffiti dating back to the 1800's is found on the rocky cliffs, testament to past voyagers. Explore the coves by Zodiac or kayak to find Galapagos Penguin, booby, pelican, and other seabirds. An excellent snorkeling opportunity is offered here, after the walk. After dinner, a sky full of stars beckons you out onto the deck to observe the Milky Way Galaxy. Day Six Our morning excursion is a Zodiac ride at Elizabeth Bay, ISABELA, which includes a visit to a secluded cove lined with large, red mangrove trees. Here, turtles, rays, and shorebirds can be seen. Motor to the rocky islets known as Las Marielas, where a colony of nesting Galapagos Penguin, Flightless Cormorant, and Marine Iguana are found. At the base of Alcedo Volano, disembark at Urbina Bay, ISABELA, where the coastal seabed is exposed as a result of the dramatic volcanic uplift that occurred in The marine remnants of coral skeletons, some of them waist-high, are visited after a wet landing on the beach. Brown Pelican and Flightless Cormorant nest here. Marine Iguana are seen along the coast. Day Seven This morning, we have a wet-landing at Puerto Egas, SANTIAGO (James). Stroll along the shoreline looking for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the tidal pools. At low tide, catch a glimpse of Marine Iguana as they feed on the exposed green algae. Watch for Great Blue Heron, Lava Heron, American Oystercatcher, and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. Our walk ends at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where
we encounter Fur Sea Lion, once on the verge of extinction. Before returning to the yacht, there is opportunity for snorkeling and kayaking. This afternoon, we disembark on RABIDA ISLAND (Jervis), located off of James Island. Rabida sports the most diversified volcanic rocks of all the islands and is considered the geographic center of Galapagos. The dark-red sand beach originated from the erosion of volcanic stones. Follow a trail that leads to a saltwater lagoon and observe Greater Flamingo as they feed. Brown Pelican nest in the mangroves, at the far side of the lagoon. After the walk, there is time for snorkeling. Day Eight Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and their tortoise corals and breeding center where you will see new hatchlings and miniature tortoises not yet ready to be repatriated. Scientists from all over the globe work at the station conducting biological research. Also, visit the Van Straelen Hall where there are exhibits and a short video presentation. Visitors can see the pen of Lonesome George, the last surviving member of the Pinta Island subspecies. In the afternoon, visit SANTA FE (Barrington), a volcanic uplift, starting with a wet-landing at a beach among the sea lions. Here, we can observe one of the few remaining land iguanas of the species endemic to Santa Fe Island. Some of these iguanas can be five feet long and have very pronounced spines along their backs. We also find an amazing forest of giant prickly pear cactus. Day Nine We visit the Interpretation Center opened on San Cristobal Island in Here, we gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the islands. Afterwards, spend some time in port before heading to the airport for your flight back to the mainland, departing noon time, on Aerogal. Overnight will be at San Jorge Eco-Lodge just outside of Quito. See description of the lodge under the Pre-Tour Extension. Day 10 Departures Transfer to airport and return flights to the states.
