5 ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 1 Foreword It has been a remarkable year for BCN to become a full partner of BirdLife International in Nepal that was approved at the 57 th BirdLife Global Council meeting held in Cambridge UK in June We believe such acknowledgement are testament of our conservation and sustainable development initiatives over the past three decades and motivates us to strive for ambitious conservation goals. We have also framed our Five Year Strategic Plan to determine the organizational policy, planning and framework to guide BCN for the next 5 years towards achieving its goal and objectives. BCN has been supporting government of Nepal in conserving critically endangered species like Vultures and Bengal Florican through developing and implementing action plans. We have continued our support to Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre at Kasara and Vulture Safe Feeding sites in various parts of the country. Diclofenac Free Zone now covers 53 districts with total area of sq km. The successful transfer of six captive reared vultures in to the release aviary for future release in to the wild is the biggest conservation achievement this year. Our main policy intervention project, Mainstreaming Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services into Community Forestry in Nepal funded by UK government s Darwin Initiative and implemented in collaboration with BirdLife International, Department of Forests (DOF) and Federation of Community Forest Users, Nepal (FECOFUN) is being successfully piloted in 14 sites. Our journey for conservation of birds and biodiversity has now reached to 35 years and we have come a long way from where we had begun. It would not have been possible without trust and support from government line agencies, especially Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Department of Forest, National Parks and Wildlife Reserve Offices, Department of Drug Administration, Department of Livestock Services and District Livestock Offices. We are indebted to the trust our members, volunteers, staffs and partners have put on our mission and expect the same in our future endeavors. Thank you! 17 ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 13 Saving Species Nepal has been blessed with diverse wildlife diversity and endemism. While talking about avifauna, Nepal harbors nearly 10% of the world s bird species. It is because of the unique characteristic of the landscape lying between Palearctic and indo- Malaya biogeographically realm. The diversity is also supported by the drastic altitudinal variation within short distance. Recent data shows, there are over 880 species of birds recorded from Nepal and this trend is increasing each year. Nevertheless, there are still under surveyed areas in Nepal because of the severe topography and inaccessibility that shows the potentiality of recording even more species. Ongoing change in the climate has also impacted in the distribution of bird species. So, BCN has been recording and updating the bird species from various sites and contributing in conservation action. Nation-wide Vulture Nest Monitoring Regular nest monitoring of different vulture species, White-rumped Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, Redheaded Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Himalayan Griffon and Bearded Vulture was conducted nationwide.
