Please read through this guide carefully, as it contains information and suggestions that are important for your project. 4-H leaders can obtain a Leader Project Guide and other resources from the PEI 4-H Office. Hopefully you, as a member, will Learn to do by Doing through hands-on activities that will encourage learning and enjoyment. If you have any questions, contact your District 4-H Officer or your 4-H project leader. In the spirit of learn to do by doing, all those involved in 4 -H are encouraged to practice good sportsmanship, use common sense at all 4-H activities and the work in any 4- H project should be the member s own work. BIRDFEEDER Milk Carton Feeder There are many different types of birdfeeders Suet Feeders, Fruit and Bagel Feeders, Platform Feeders, Window Feeders, etc. The type of birdfeeder you choose to make is up to you. Birdfeeders can be made from almost anything. Use you imagination and design a birdfeeder that you will be able to hang outside on a tree near your window. Maybe you would like to try making a birdfeeder out of some of these materials Pine cones String Plastic pop bottle Milk carton Flower pot Wood Juice or coffee cans Ketchup bottle Frisbees Fruit Feeder If you are stuck for ideas, check out the internet. Don t forget to decorate your birdfeeder and make it attractive for your visitors!

BUILD A BAT BOX (You can use this pattern or one of your choice) Bats need a range of roosting sites, including summer daytime roosts, winter hibernation ones and breeding sites.

Make sure the wood is untreated - many wood preservatives can kill bats. The best place to position a bat box is on a tree.

3 BUILD A BAT BOX (You can use this pattern or one of your choice) Bats need a range of roosting sites, including summer daytime roosts, winter hibernation ones and breeding sites. You can help them find a suitable roost by putting up a simple bat box. Just follow these guidelines Make the box from rough sawn timber to give the bats something to cling to. Make sure the wood is untreated - many wood preservatives can kill bats. The best place to position a bat box is on a tree. Place them in groups round three sides of a tree - bats like to move from one box to another during the day and from season to season as temperatures change. Put the boxes as high as possible above the ground to avoid predators - some species of bat such as noctules prefer roosts at least 5 meters off the ground. Clear away surrounding branches to give them a clear flight path. Boxes can also be located on buildings. A good position is under the eaves to protect them from bad weather You need a plank of wood that is 15 cm x 110 cm x 2.5 cm. Nail or screw the pieces together. The base is fixed to leave a gap next to the back board between 15mm & 20 mm wide. The lid can either be nailed on or hinged (bike tire inner tube is good) and wired securely shut. Your bat box needs to be well made to avoid drafts or rain getting in! Bats can take a while to i n v e s t i g a t e n e w premises, but if your box is not occupied within three years, try moving it. You can check if the box is being used by looking for crumbly brown or black droppings on the ground. BUILD A SWALLOW BOX(You can use this pattern or one of your choice) Materials: One 4-foot length of 1 x 6 (1 x 5 1/2 ) pine board 16 sixpenny galvanized nails 1 scrap piece of exterior plywood, at least 6 x 8 1 small brass hinge with screws Tools: hammer, hand saw, circular saw and table saw, drill with 1/4 bit, keyhole say or 1 1/2 bit, for entrance hole This has everything swallows look for in a new home. It s made of unpainted wood and has adequate drainage and ventilation, no outside perch, and an entrance hole exactly 1 1/2 inches in diameter. 1. Saw the pine board into six segments. Note that each side piece is cut at an angle so that the front edge is 8 long and the back is Saw 3/8 off the corners of the bottom piece, for drainage. 3. Drill or saw an entrance hole 1 1/2 in diameter, with the top edge about 1 1/8 from the top of the front piece. 4. On the inside of the front piece, carve some shallow horizontal scratches with a nail. This helps the nestlings get a grip as they try to climb out of the box. 5. Nail the two sides to the bottom, using two nails hammered 1 in from the corners. 6. Drill 1/3 mounting holes in the top centre and bottom centre of the back. 7. Nail the front and back to the sides, using three nails along each edge. 8. For ventilation, drill two 1/4 holes along the top of the side pieces. 9. Cut the roof from the scrap plywood so that it overlaps the sides and front. Saw the plywood s rear edge on a slight bevel to butt against the back piece. Attached the roof to the back with the hinge. The swallow box should be mounted 5 to 12 feet high and placed in an open, sunny spot where the birds can fill up on flying insects. The time to put it up is in early spring, when swallow are looking for a dry, safe place to raise their young.

4 Forest: A living community (group) made up of many trees, other plants, and animals. A forest is often divided into forest stands. Coniferous or softwood forest: A forest that has mostly needleleaf trees such as pine, spruce and fir. (These are also called conifer and soft wood trees). Deciduous or hardwood forest: A forest that has mostly broadleaf tress such as birch, oak and maple. (These trees are also called deciduous and hardwood trees. Forest Stand: A group of trees in the same area that are alike in make-up, size, height and age. Canopy: Top layer of the forest the tops (crowns) of the tallest trees. Understory: Layer below the forest canopy the tops of younger, shorter trees and shrubs. Ground cover: Layer below the forest understory grasses, wildflowers, ferns and small shrubs. Forest floor: Layer below all the other forest layers all things that have fallen or live on the forest ground. Ecosystem: A community in nature formed when all the plants and animals and the environment of a certain place interact with each other. (For example, the forest). Environment: All the surroundings which affect the life and growth of plants and animals - air, sunshine, water, soil, minerals. Producers: Green plants that use sunlight to make food for themselves to grow, and for the animals that each them. Consumers: Animals that eat (or consumer) other plants and / or animals plant-eaters and meat-eaters are forest consumers. Decomposers: Very small plants and animals (insects, slugs, bacteria, fungi, etc.) that live in the soil and help break down (or decompose) dead plants and animals. Food chain: Food energy that is stored in plants is passed to the animals that eat them (Plant-eater). These animals are in turn eaten by other animals (meat- eater) - and a chain is formed. Forest products: Things that come directly or indirectly from the forest including firewood, lumber, plywood, Christmas trees, maple syrup, turpentine, paper and some plastics. Broadleaf trees: Trees that have leaves, not needles. They are called hardwoods because their wood is hard, and deciduous because they lose their leaves every fall. (Maple, birch, oak). Needleleaf trees: Trees that have needles instead of broad leaves. They are called softwoods because their wood is soft, and coniferous because they have cones. (Pine, spruce, fir). Crown: Top part of a tree, including branches with their leaves of needles. Trunk: Main stream of a tree that holds the crown up tall and straight. The trunk is made of wood, which makes it strong. Roots: The underground branches of a tree that absorb water and minerals that the tree needs in order to live and grow. Rootlets: Small hair-like roots which play a major role in absorbing water. Annual Growth Ring: A layer of wood including spring wood and summer wood - grown in a single year. Birds: Warm-blooded animals with feathers and wings. Their young hatch from eggs. Mammals: Warm-blooded animals with hair on their bodies. The females have milk glands for feeding the young. Migrate: To move from one place to another regularly to feed or breed and raise young. Usually migrate to the same general area each year. Hibernate: To spend the winter in an inactive, sleeping condition, usually in a den.

You must participate in your club s plan for a community project and you should have a role to play. Describe your involvement with your club community project this year. You are expected to participate with your club to complete a project (or provide a service) which helps your club or others become aware of the importance of agriculture in our lives.
