3 About the AOS Slide Collection Over the last thirty years, the Alabama Ornithological Society (AOS) has assembled a series of slides of birds found in Alabama and Northwest Florida. The AOS and the AOS Slide Collection Committee wish to make the best of these slides available for purchase to individuals, educational institutions and conservation organizations, solely for scientific and educational purposes. All species represented in this collection have been verified either in Alabama or Northwest Florida. Many of them, due to vagaries of migration, breadth of range and other factors, are also found in other parts of the continent. So that the absolute best slide of a particular species may be used, the photo itself may have been taken outside the Alabma/Northwest Florida area. We hope that these slides will help satisfy your needs for educational programs or classes on the birds of your area or for other projects. Slide Purchases Since most of these slides were taken for the specific purpose of obtaining photographs of birds found in the AOS area and since duplicates will not be mass produced, the slides are being offered at a purchase price of $2.00 per slide, plus $3.00 postage for up to 50 slides. Additional postage will be charged for orders of more than 50 slides. See the order form at the back of this catalog for further details on pricing and ordering. Slide Loans AOS members may borrow slides through the AOS slide loan program for short-term use. Slide loans by AOS members will be subject to paying for shipping expenses only. Please contact the AOS Slide Curator for more information about this option. We appreciate your interest in these slides and in the bird life of our area! We shall also appreciate your advising us of any organizations or individuals to which you feel this catalog would be of interest. Please direct any questions or comments to: Michael Owens AOS Slide Curator 7161 Old Dixiana Road Pinson, AL (205) or by to: owens@uab.campuscwix.net How to Use This Catalog The slides in this catalog are listed in alphabetical order by common bird name. An index of slides listed in AOU order is also included in the back of the catalog. For purposes of brevity, the directory of birds uses abbreviations to describe the available slides. The legend of these abbreviations is as follows: Ad = Adult AR = At Rest BV = Back View Fem or F = Female FS = Full Sun FV = Front View IF = In Flight IH = In Hand Juv = Juvenile M = Male OW = On Water RV = Rear View SV = Side View UV = Underside View Plumage descriptions are basically divided into two categories - Alternate (Alt) or Basic, with Alternate representing breeding plumage. All other descriptions are spelled out. Please note that slides described as "in hand" (or IH) are those of birds held in connection with banding or research operations. Page 1

4 How to Order Slides Orders for slide purchases or AOS member loans can be submitted in two ways: Completely fill out the slide order form located in the back of this catalog and return it along with full payment to the AOS Slide Curator, Michael Owens. This is the PREFERED method for ordering slides from this collection. Please feel free to attach a separate sheet of paper to the catalog order form if you need additional room to write down your order. Contact the AOS Slide Curator and request slides based on a group or type of birds (e.g. backyard birds, woodpeckers, shore birds, etc ). The slide curator will then select slides of his choosing (if available) to fulfill your order. Completed order forms and requests for information should be directed to: Michael Owens AOS Slide Curator 7161 Old Dixiana Road Pinson, AL (205) or by to: owens@uab.campuscwix.net Terms and Conditions of Slide Purchases and/or Loans Please note that the AOS has the right to alter the terms and conditions of this agreement without prior notice. By submitting an order for slides from the AOS Slide Collection, the individual or entity shall, by that order, agree on behalf of himself and his successors and assigns that no duplicates will be made of any of the slides ordered, nor will they be used for any but scientific or educational purposes. For any violation of that agreement, it is, by submission of such order, agreed that liquidated damages in the amount of $20.00 per slide per violation shall be due to the Alabama Ornithological Society. The AOS also reserves the right to enforce or redress violations of said agreement. Any dispute in connection with this agreement shall be arbitrated in Birmingham, Alabama pursuant to rules of the American Arbitration Association and the laws of Alabama. The buyer shall pay all arbitration and court costs, reasonable legal fees and expenese, and legal interest on any award or judgement in favor of the AOS. Submit Slides to the AOS Slide Collection AOS members are welcome to submit their favorite bird slides to the AOS Slide Collection. The collection does not identify photographers or acknowledge credits on the slides. The slides are listed as part of the collection as a whole and belong to the AOS. No monetary compensation is given to photographers for submissions to the slide collection. Any submissions received for inclusion are voted on by the AOS Slide Committee. All reviewed slides are voted on annoymously (no photographer identity is revealed to the voting committee) and are voted into the collection based on quality and need. Contributions to the AOS Slide Collection help to further the purpose of education and archiving of photos of Alabama birds. As new slides become available, aged slides that are replaced by higher quality photos and are moved to the AOS Slide Archives, where they are stored indefinitely. Page 2
