2 Tour Leader: Alexis Sanchez Local Ornithologist Participants: Dave Palmer Sandy Nicolson Sue Green Colin Green Elen Lewis Robert Thompson Joan Graham Olga Aardoom Frank Golding Day 1 Thursday 25th April We met up after arrival and transferred to the Canopy Tower in the afternoon, and prepared for our upcoming days of birding. Day 2 Friday 26th April Observation Deck, Semaphore Hill Road and Ammo Dump Ponds We started our first full day early on the Canopy Tower Observation Deck, and while enjoying a cup of coffee at sunrise, we saw Red-lored Parrots, Green Shrike-Vireo, Shining Honeycreeper, Golden-hooded Tanager and had nice views of a perched Bat Falcon. After a delicious breakfast, we birded along Semaphore Hill Road. As we worked our way down the hill, we spotted Squirrel Cuckoo, Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, Black-breasted and White-whiskered Puffbirds, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, White-flanked Antwren, Southern Bentbill, Blue-crowned and Red-capped Manakins, Long-billed Gnatwren, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, a beautiful Slate-colored Grosbeak and a Red-tailed Squirrel! We returned back to the Canopy Tower for lunch and a rest after our morning of birding. In the afternoon, we headed over to the Ammo Dump Ponds in Gamboa, where we got great views of a family of White-throated Crakes in the grasses near the road. Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Wattled Jacana, Southern Lapwing, Pale-vented Pigeon, Black-mandibled Toucan, Barred Antshrike, Panama Flycatcher, Golden-fronted Greenlet, Streaked Saltator and Black-striped Sparrow were all seen at the ponds. Other highlights included three species of seedeaters, Variable, Yellow-bellied and Ruddy-breasted, as well as a migratory Dickcissel! Back to the tower for a delicious dinner, review of our checklist and to prepare for the next day. 2 Naturetrek June 13

3 Day 3 Saturday 27th April Observation Deck, Old Gamboa Road & Summit Ponds, and the Chagres River & Gamboa Rainforest Resort At sunrise we met again on the Canopy Tower Observation Deck to start off the morning, where among other canopy species, we saw Brown-hooded Parrot and Mealy Parrot in the treetops. After breakfast we birded along Old Gamboa Road. The morning was hot and sunny, and along the road and patches of dry forest, we found Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Jet Antbird, Golden-collared Manakin, Black-tailed Flycatcher, Fulvous-vented Euphonia and Black-bellied Wren. At the Summit Ponds, we saw 4 species of Kingfishers; Amazon, Green, Ringed and American Pygmy-Kingfishers. At the ponds, we also observed Boat-billed Herons, a Solitary Sandpiper, a Hook-billed Kite overhead and a stunning Black Hawk-Eagle perched nearby! After our morning along the Old Gamboa Road, we returned back to the Tower for a hearty lunch. In the afternoon we visited the grounds of the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, along the Chagres River. Highlights here included views of both male and female Great Antshrike, Cinnamon and White-winged Becards, Red-throated Ant-Tanager, Black-headed Saltator, Yellow-tailed Oriole and Yellow-billed Cacique. There was also a flurry of birds bathing in a puddle behind the resort, among them a beautiful White-bellied Antbird. Day 4 Sunday 28th April Full-day - Pipeline Road This morning after an early breakfast, we headed out to the world-famous Pipeline Road for a full day of birding. After finding a lovely Rosy Thrush-Tanager singing at the entrance to Pipeline Road, we knew we were in for a great day. We started walking along the road at Quebrada Juan Grande. Along the road we had nice looks at Pied Puffbird, Cinnamon Woodpecker, Gray-necked Wood-Rail, White-tailed Trogon, Black-throated Trogon, American Pygmy-Kingfisher, Gray-headed Kite, a Canada Warbler lagging in migration, Bay Wren and Song Wren. We were lucky to find an army ant swarm, attended by Spotted, Bicolored and Ocellated Antbirds, Northern Barred Woodcreeper, Plain Brown Woodcreeper, Blackstriped Woodcreeper, Gray-headed Tanager, Chestnut-backed Antbird and a Moustached Antwren! Other highlights included a pair of Great Jacamar in which we observed the male displaying for the female, and a beautiful Semiplumbeous Hawk as we headed back to the truck. It was a great day! Day 5 Monday 29th April Observation Deck, Plantation Road and Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal We met at sunrise once again on the Canopy Tower Observation Deck for a hot drink and to enjoy the morning birding activity in the canopy. Green Shrike-Vireo offered great views this morning. After breakfast, we spent the morning birding along Plantation Road, where a Mourning Warbler greeted us at the entrance. Other birds we found along this trail include the tiny Stripe-throated Hermit, Black- Naturetrek June 13 3

4 throated Trogon, Black-breasted Puffbird, Lineated Woodpecker, Brown-capped Tyrannulet, Forest Elaenia, Golden-crowned Spadebill, Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher, Red-capped Manakin, Tropical Gnatcatcher and a pair of Great Tinamous displaying! Squirrel-sized Geoffroy s Tamarins were also spotted along Plantation Road this morning. We returned back to the Tower, reviewed our list of birds for the morning and enjoyed lunch together. In the afternoon, we visited the Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal, Panama s most famous accomplishment and a world-class feat of engineering. We enjoyed the museum for its historical information and hands-on interactive displays, and watched large container ships pass through the locks. After dinner, we headed out at night to look for mammals, nocturnal birds and other night creatures. Although our outing was fairly quiet, we found both Two-toed and Three-toed Sloths, a Common Potoo, and heard a Rufous Nightjar calling. Day 6 Tuesday 30th April Pipeline Road and Summit Gardens This morning after an early breakfast, we headed back to Pipeline Road for the morning. On our way, we stopped briefly at the Ammo Dump ponds and had nice views of Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Snail Kite and Bat Falcon! During our morning along Pipeline Road, we saw Greater Ani, White-necked Puffbird, Blackmandibled Toucan, Spotted Antbird, Olivaceous Flatbill, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Rufous Mourner, and Bright-rumped Attila, among many others. We were back at the Canopy Tower in time for a delicious lunch. After lunch, we headed to Summit Gardens, initially started as a botanical garden in 1923, this national park now operates a zoo where you can view native Panamanian wildlife. The grounds of the botanical gardens and zoo offer great birding! Here we got great looks at Crested Caracara, Streak-headed Woodpecker, Black-chested Jay and Giant Cowbird. After our afternoon of birding, we headed back to the Canopy Tower for cocktails and dinner. Day 7 Wednesday 1st May Cerro Azul and Costa Del Este For our final full day of birding, we headed up into the foothills of Cerro Azul, east of Panama City. This area is very special for birds, and there are many species here that we do not find regularly in the Canal Zone. Today was hot and we had some light rain. Here we scored on the endemic Stripe-cheeked Woodpecker, as well as the beautiful Speckled Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager and Yellow-eared Toucanet. Hummingbirds were a highlight today as we tallied 16 species, including 2 female and 1 male Rufouscrested Coquette at Jerry and Linda Harrison s feeders, a Green Hermit, White-tipped Sicklebill, Greencrowned Brilliant, Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer, Violet-headed Hummingbird and Violet-capped Hummingbird. Other great birds included Swallow-tailed Kite, White Hawk, White-collared Swift, Black Phoebe, Yellow-faced Grassquit, Hepatic Tanager, Carmiol s Tanager and Lesser Goldfinch. We also found a small troop of Geoffroy s Spider Monkeys during our morning in Cerro Azul. 4 Naturetrek June 13

5 On our way back to the Canopy Tower, we stopped briefly at Costa Del Este in Panama City to check out the mudflats along the Pacific Coast. Here, coastal and wading birds are abundant, and we had great views of Brown Pelican, Neotropic Cormorant, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Yellow-crowned Night- Heron, Wood Stork, White Ibis, Grey (Black-bellied) Plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, Whimbrel, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, Gull-billed Tern, and both Laughing & Franklin s Gulls. What a great day of birding! Day 8 Thursday 2nd May Farewell What a great trip we had! It was a rewarding week of birding, with many highlights. Some of our participants headed home, while others headed on to the Canopy Lodge in El Valle, where different species awaited in the foothills of western Panama.
