RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 2 This exotic birding adventure takes us to many seldom-visited and remote destinations in north-east India. We will have the rare opportunity to search for a host of Asia s most tantalising and desirable species, including the stunning Temminck s Tragopan, Bengal Florican, Black-breasted Parrotbill, Ward s Trogon, exquisite Beautiful Nuthatch, Bugun Liocichla, incredible Grandala, Ibisbill, rare and endangered White-winged Duck, and dazzling Fire-tailed Myzornis to name just some of the many exciting possibilities! We will explore a wealth of varied habitats and altitudes during this tour, from lush broad-leaved forests of Manas National Park near the Bhutanese border and vast wetlands along the Brahmaputra River floodplain at Dibru-Saikhowa, to mixed woodlands, grasslands and lower altitude forest in Kaziranga National Park, as well as beautiful swathes of montane and hill forest and boulder-strewn Himalayan rivers in Nameri National Park and the Eagle s Nest area. Kaziranga also boasts an amazing mammal list and we can expect some awesome creatures, including Indian Onehorned Rhinoceros, Asian Elephant, Water Buffalo, Swamp Deer and possibly even Tiger! This is a very exciting tour that takes us to some of Asia s best birding sites where few birders have ever ventured and we will no doubt encounter many rarely-seen species! 3 RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 3 TOUR ROUTE MAP Specialities of the Brahmaputra Extension Day 1: Arrival in Dibrugarh and transfer to Tinsukia. After arrival in Dibrugarh, we will be met by our team of drivers and our local birding leader. Thereafter, we will begin the relatively short drive to our accommodation in the nearby town of Tinsukia, our base for the next two nights and the gateway to the phenomenal Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Day 2: Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. We have the entire day to explore the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and we will be searching for a host of very special and range-restricted species. The national park is a biodiversity hotspot situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, on rich alluvial floodplains. Fashioned by earthquakes and everchanging watercourses, it has numerous pockets of seasonally flooded forests and grassland creating a varied habitat suitable for a variety of animals and birds. We will take a short ride up the river on a motorboat, accompanied by game guards while searching for our target birds. Top of the list here are Marsh, Jerdon s, Slender-billed and Chestnut-capped Babblers, Pied Harrier, Black-breasted Parrotbill, Swamp Prinia, Finn s Weaver and Jerdon s Bush Chat. Of course, there are many other commoner species within the reserve and we have a Pied Harrier by Glen Valentine

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 4 good chance of finding Siberian Stonechat, Yellow-bellied Prinia, Smoky Warbler, Longtailed Shrike, Citrine, Western Yellow and White Wagtails, Zitting Cisticola and Striated Grassbird. More secretive species such as King Quail, Greater Painted-snipe and Watercock could be flushed from under foot, water edges shall be searched for Cinnamon and Yellow Bitterns. After searching for our target species, we will return to the park entrance for lunch. The afternoon will then be spent scanning the waterways for a variety of waterbirds that could include Fulvous Whistling, Indian Spot-billed Chestnut-capped Babbler by Dennis Braddy and Ferruginous Ducks, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, Common Teal, Eurasian Coot and Bronze-winged and the striking Pheasant-tailed Jacanas. Raptors may include the elusive Oriental Hobby and Pallas s, Grey-headed and Lesser Fish Eagles, while both the rare and endangered White-rumped and Slender-billed Vultures still occur in this area. The park also harbours a wealth of mammals and we are likely to encounter Water Buffalo and Asian Elephant. Assamese and Rhesus Macaques may also put in an appearance, as could a range of herbivores such as Sambar, Barking and Hog Deer, and Wild Boar. Tiger and Leopard are the main predators of the area but we d be very lucky to see either of these elusive beauties. With some luck, we may even see the strange Ganges River Dolphin. Day 3: Tinsukia to Kaziranga National Park via Digboi Oil Fields. After an early breakfast, we head to the Digboi Oil Fields. Our prime reason for being here is to find the very localised Chestnut-backed Laughingthrush. This region of forested hillsides delivers some quality species, and we can expect to find such specials as Pied Falconet, Lesser Coucal, Grey Treepie, White-rumped Shama, Dark-necked Tailorbird, Oriental Pied Hornbill, and Rufous-necked Laughingthrush. After lunch, we shall continue onwards to the world famous Kaziranga National Park, arriving in the late afternoon. Days 4 & 5: Kaziranga National Park. We have two full days to explore this exciting wilderness of marshes, open grassland, woodlands and forest, which is situated on the floodplain of the Brahmaputra River. A total of one-third of the entire world population of Indian Rhinoceros is located in Kaziranga and we will likely enjoy incredible sightings of these highly threatened beasts. The area is also home to many eye-catching and very special birds, including the rare Bengal Florican, which will be searched for in the long grass that covers Pied Falconet by Rich Lindie

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 5 huge areas of the reserve. Our best chance at viewing the endangered Florican will be from elephant back and we stand a good possibility of seeing this rare and localised bustard! Our rather odd form of transport will also give us our best shots at other high priority species, including the near-endemic Swamp Francolin, King Quail, Baya, Streaked, Black-breasted and Finn s Weaver, as well as Chestnut-capped and Striated Babblers, Bengal Bush Lark, Rosy Pipit, seldom-seen and erratic Bristled and Indian Grassbirds, and Siberian Rubythroat. The critically endangered Greater Adjutant occurs alongside Lesser Adjutant in wet areas, Indian Rhinoceros by Markus Lilje and we will also keep our eyes peeled skywards for Pallas s and Grey-headed Fish Eagles. Western Marsh and Pied Harriers can be found quartering over the grassland areas, and the stately Black-necked Stork is still fairly numerous throughout the region. Kaziranga s network of extensive wetlands is home to huge numbers of resident and migrant waterbirds, most notably the handsome Bar-headed Goose, Indian Spot-billed Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Pheasanttailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas, and the splendid Stork-billed Kingfisher, among many other possible species. Woodland areas are the best place to search for a number of specials, including the huge Blue-bearded and stunning Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters, Green Imperial Pigeon, Black-winged Cuckooshrike, Large Woodshrike, Lineated, Blue-throated and Coppersmith Barbets, extravagant Green-billed Malkoha, four species of gorgeous parakeets (Rose-ringed, Alexandrine, Red-breasted and the scarce Blossom-headed) and a host of woodpeckers that include Streak-throated, Fulvous-breasted and Grey-capped Pygmy, as well as Greater and Black-rumped Flamebacks. We will also explore small patches of evergreen forest in the area where we hope to find numerous interesting species. These include the striking Asian Fairy Bluebird, Black-crested Bulbul and both Great and Oriental Pied Hornbills. More secretive species include Puffthroated and Abbott s Babblers and Whiterumped Shama. Other notable birds that we hope to see here are Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Common Emerald Dove, Greater and Lesser Yellownapes, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Streaked Spiderhunter and Crimson Sunbird. Game viewing in the reserve is excellent and besides the rhinoceros, there are also plenty of Bar-headed Geese by Markus Lilje

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 6 Pheasant-tailed Jacana by Rich Lindie wild Water Buffalo and Asian Elephant. Furthermore, Kaziranga is one of the reserves where Tiger still occurs in reasonable numbers; here they tend to favour areas where the grass is long and dense, which aids them in ambushing their main prey, Swamp and Hog Deer. We will, however, be lucky to encounter one of these regal beasts, particularly due to their chosen habitat. While in the forests we will also keep our eyes and ears open for Hoolock Gibbon and Capped Langur, while other mammal species we may find include Sambar and Wild Boar, both of which frequent the grassy, watery meadows in the reserve. Day 6: Kaziranga National Park to Nameri National Park (or Guwahati). After breakfast, we depart Kaziranga National Park and head to Nameri National Park for the start of our exciting Eagle s Nest & Beyond tour. Any participants leaving after the extension will have a private transfer arranged to go back to Guwahati. Eagle s Nest & Beyond Day 1: Kaziranga NP (or Guwahati) to Nameri National Park. The tour will start with a drive from Kaziranga National Park into the Himalayan Foothills, reaching Nameri National Park in the early afternoon. (Any participants arriving for the start of the main tour only will have a private transfer from Guwahati to Nameri NP arranged for them). This wonderful reserve is contiguous with the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, together constituting an area of over 1 000km² (390 mi²) of semi-evergreen forests, moist deciduous forest and narrow strips of grassland along the beautiful crystalclear, boulder-strewn rivers. After lunch, we will board small boats and enjoy an afternoon s rafting trip down the gentle Jia Bhoreli River. This river attracts such species as Small Pratincole, Great and Indian Stone-curlews, River Lapwing, River Tern, Crested Kingfisher, Sand Lark and, if we are very lucky, perhaps the incomparable Ibisbill! Day 2: Nameri National Park. We have a full day to explore the forested areas of this park for our main target the highly endangered Whitewinged Duck. This large forest duck inhabits forested pools and slow-flowing river channels and our chances of finding it are very good. Whilst searching for this rare species we will also be on the lookout for other forest denizens, including the rare Pale-capped Pigeon, Pintailed, Wedge-tailed and Ashy-headed Green Pigeons, seldom-seen Pied Falconet, spectacular White-winged Duck by Markus Lilje

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 7 Ibisbill by Adam Riley Sultan Tit, Common Green Magpie, Greater Necklaced and Lesser Necklaced Laughingthrushes, Green-billed Malkoha, secretive Pale-chinned Blue Flycatcher, Chestnut-bellied and Velvet-fronted Nuthatches, gigantic Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Vernal Hanging Parrot, the attractive and elusive Blackbreasted Thrush, Maroon Oriole, Barred Cuckoo-Dove, Wreathed and magnificent Great Hornbills, Oriental Dollarbird, and the scarce Silver-backed Needletail overhead. Depending on the rains, we may even find Hooded Pitta during our forays through this wonderful reserve. Day 3: Nameri to Dirang (Sangti Valley). After breakfast today we will drive north and slightly west to the Sangti Valley. The area of interest is the poorly explored East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, the north-easternmost state of India. The area forms the border between China and India and is situated just west of the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. The eastern Himalayan slopes form a varied and rich landscape and habitat with the most wonderful rainforest rich with bird and animal life. En route we will explore some lower elevation bamboo and mixed broad-leaved forest where some very special species can be found. Targets include Grey-headed, White-breasted and Pale-billed Parrotbills, gregarious White-hooded Babbler, Streak-throated Barwing, extremely elusive Pale-headed Woodpecker, Blue-throated Blue Flycatcher, Golden-breasted Fulvetta and Broad-billed Warbler. Other interesting species could include Yellow-bellied, Grey-cheeked and Yellow-vented Warblers, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Long-tailed Sibia, scarce White-naped Yuhina, Yellow-throated and Nepal Fulvettas, Long-tailed Minivet, handsome Greater and Lesser Yellownapes, and Hair-crested and Ashy Drongos. We can expect to arrive at Dirang in the late afternoon. Days 4 to 6: Mandala Phudung and Sela Pass areas. The higher elevations of Mandala Phudung hold a number of wonderful species and we will spend a full day scouring the area in search of the many specialities here. Notable birds that we will be on the hunt for include the dazzling Firetailed Myzornis, Scaly-breasted and Bar-winged Wren- Babblers, Spotted Laughingthrush, Stripe-throated and Rufous-vented Yuhinas, nomadic Golden-naped, Crimsonbrowed and Scarlet Finches, Grey-headed Bullfinch, Ferruginous and Slaty-blue Flycatchers, Chestnut-headed Tesia and the localised Brown-throated Fulvetta. We may also encounter a host of other lovely species, including soaring Himalayan Vulture, regal Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Red Junglefowl, Russet Sparrow, striking Crested Bunting, Grandala by Glen Valentine

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 8 Rosy Pipit and the entertaining Brown Dipper, among many others. On one of the days, we will drive further up to explore the higher reaches of the Sela Pass (weather and conditions permitting) at an altitude of 4 170m (13 800ft). The scenery here is unsurpassed and we will no doubt enjoy an amazing, bird-filled day. Some of the very special high-altitude species we will be on the lookout for include the spectacular Himalayan Monal, Kalij and Blood Pheasants, Snow and Hill Partridges, unique and rather bizarre Wallcreeper, Snow Pigeon, bold and demonstrative Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, curious Spotted Nutcracker, Red-billed Chough, Fire-tailed Myzornis by Markus Lilje high-flying Brandt s and Plain Mountain Finches, Collared Grosbeak, Hodgson s Treecreeper, the stunning Grandala, Alpine and Rufous-breasted Accentors, rarely-seen Solitary Snipe, Himalayan Buzzard, Bearded Vulture, Plain-backed Thrush, White-collared and Tibetan Blackbirds, gorgeous Golden Bush Robin, eye-catching Spotted and Black-faced Laughingthrushes, dazzling Firetailed Sunbird, Rosy Pipit, White-throated Dipper in the icy mountain streams, Eurasian Wren, Indian Blue Robin and Dark-rumped, Dark-breasted and Himalayan White-browed Rosefinches. Day 7: Dirang to Eagle s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary. Today we make our way into the state of Arunachal Pradesh, heading for the famous Eagle s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary. Eagle s Nest is a wonderfully diverse reserve, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 3 200m (1 640 to ft) above sea level, and the park protects an impressive 218km² (over 100mi²) of fabulous forest habitat. Before departing for Eagle s Nest we will spend some time in the Dirang area searching for some very special and often elusive birds, including Black-tailed Crake, the rare Longbilled Plover and the shy and seldom-seen Blyth s Kingfisher. The birding en route to Eagle s Nest can be very productive and may yield a number of great birds such as Short-billed Minivet, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Black-chinned and Striated Yuhinas, Spot-winged Grosbeak, Rusty-fronted Barwing, difficult and shy Blue-winged and Scaly Laughingthrushes, immaculate Rufous-throated Wren-babbler, White-breasted Parrotbill and White-tailed Nuthatch. Upon arrival, we will check into our tented camp and spend the afternoon birding for specialities in the surrounding forest. Days 8 to 12: Eagle s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary. We have five full days to explore the splendours of Eagle s Nest, and we will visit a range of altitudes to enable us to find the host of excellent species that occur here. Eagle s Nest has recently attracted a lot of attention in birding circles due to the discovery of a new White-breasted Parrotbill by Markus Lilje

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 9 species of laughingthrush, the Bugun Liochicla (described in 2006), which is named after the local tribe in the area. This is the only site on earth where this beautiful bird has been found and our chances of finding this enigmatic species are very good, though by no means guaranteed. The entire area offers excellent birding and the list of tantalising specialities is almost endless! Of major significance, however, are Ward s Trogon, Purple and Green Cochoas, Coral-billed and Slender-billed Scimitar Babblers, stunning Himalayan Cutia, Blackheaded Shrike-Babbler, Beautiful Nuthatch, exquisite and little-known Gould s Shortwing, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Himalayan Monal by Markus Lilje Long-billed and Bar-winged Wren-Babblers, and the seldom-seen Sikkim Wedge-billed Babbler, and we will try our best to locate as many of these highly desirable gems as possible! Other exciting and noteworthy species that we will be on the lookout for include the incredibly elusive Chestnut-breasted, Rufous-throated and Hill Partridges, Rufous-bellied Hawk-Eagle, Northern Goshawk, colourful Golden-throated Barbet, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, Little Forktail, unobtrusive Ashy Wood Pigeon, Black-throated Prinia, the scarce and erratic Brown Bullfinch, White-throated Needletail overhead, a range of laughingthrushes that include Blue-winged, Bhutan, White-crested, Black-faced, White-throated, Striated and Scaly, Red-faced Liocichla and, in areas of dense bamboo, Brown, White-breasted and Black-throated Parrotbills, as well as the superb but elusive Temminck s Tragopan. Mixed species flocks attract the incredible black-and-yellow Sultan Tit, Long-tailed, Beautiful and Rufous-backed Sibias, range-restricted Brown-throated Fulvetta, White-tailed Nuthatch, Mrs Gould s, Green-tailed and Black-throated Sunbirds, Green Shrike-Babbler, Black-winged Cuckooshrike, Slaty-backed and Sapphire Flycatchers, and the scarce and attractive Fire-capped Tit. The forest undergrowth supports a range of specialities too and we will search hard for the secretive White-browed Shortwing, Pygmy, Scaly-breasted, Spotted and Rufous-throated Wren-Babblers, White-tailed Robin, minuscule Chestnut-headed, Grey-bellied and Slatybellied Tesias, as well as the rare and ultra-skulking Bluefronted Robin. Day 13: Eagle s nest to Tezepur. After breakfast and some final birding, we will say our farewells to this wonderful area and depart for the town of Tezepur, birding en route. In the lower elevations in the Sangti Valley, we will have another opportunity to look for the rare Long-billed Plover, Black-tailed Crake and Blyth s Kingfisher if missed previously. We should arrive in Tezepur in the late afternoon. Ward s Trogon by Markus Lilje

RBL India - North-Eastern Itinerary & Extensions 10 Day 14: Tezepur to Guwahati, start of Manas National Park Extension. After breakfast, we begin the journey to Guwahati. Upon arrival in Guwahati, we will make a stop at the local refuse dump that attracts hundreds of regal Greater Adjutant, a rare and extremely localised bird throughout most of its limited range. Guwahati remains the best place on earth to see this stately yet also very ugly stork, with smaller numbers of the more widespread Lesser Adjutant, Asian Openbill and Black-headed Ibis also being attracted to this site. Citrine and White Wagtails are usually around in good numbers, while Striated Grassbird and Plain and Yellow-bellied Prinias will Beautiful Nuthatch by Markus Lilje be looked for in areas of rank grass. After soaking in the adjutant storks and other interesting species, we will continue to Guwahati Airport where the tour will conclude and we will catch our respective onward flights. For those continuing on our Manas National Park Extension, we will instead transfer to Manas National Park. Manas National Park Extension Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati and transfer to Manas National Park. After our arrival in Guwahati, we will begin our drive to our accommodation in Manas National Park, our base for the next three nights. Situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, the park incorporates the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan to the North, and the Manas Tiger Reserve to the West. Manas National Park is 500 km 2 in size and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
