1 White Pine Mine Tailings Area Bird Survey Report Ryne Rutherford, Biophilia, LLC Regular bird surveys were conducted at the mine tailings basins at White Pine, MI for the first time since the 90s. These surveys focused on migratory shorebirds, but all species were recorded during the surveys. Surveys began in late May and concluded in late September. Overall 9 species of birds were recorded (table ), including species of shorebirds (table ). Surveys included both northernmost tailings basins (figure ) and surrounding dikes, aspen forests, smaller ponds, grasslands and shrubby areas. Photo. 2 Figure. The White Pine mine tailings area showing the impounded northernmost dam (N) and the impoundment to the south (N). The southern edge of N was the most productive spot for migrant shorebirds in the fall. Photo. This male Wilson s phalarope was a nice surprise find on July 0.
3 Visits were made - times per month from late May until late September and averaged - hours in duration. They were conducted on foot, bike, ATV and by truck and typically involved surveying portions of the main dike between N and N along with the dike at the north end of N. Survey effort was primarily focused on fall migration. The first real push of south bound migrants occurred on July migrant when an adult Baird s sandpiper, over 0 least sandpipers and a Wilson s phalarope (photo ) were found. After that shorebird numbers didn t significantly increase again until August, when stilts sandpipers and short-billed dowitchers were recorded along with the more commonly occurring species. Even more species were present August. Joe McDonnell and I recorded species and over 00 individual shorebirds including 0 Baird s sandpipers and the first buff-breasted sandpipers of the season. Perhaps the best day of the season was on September when a spectacular total of species of shorebirds were found. The highlights were stilt sandpipers, buff-breasted sandpipers (photo ) and Baird s Sandpipers all found along the south shoreline of N. On 0 September, another buffbreasted sandpipers were found, although numbers of the other species were greatly diminished. Surveys remained productive up to the end of September with later migrating species peaking on September when 0 American golden-plovers and pectoral sandpipers were recorded. Photo. A total of buff-breasted sandpipers was recorded on September 0, a very high count for a single flock in Michigan.
