A Survey of Breeding Birds Present at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute 2007 By Bobby Hathaway and Dr. Paul Klatt Ferris State University The purpose of this study was to continue the previous year s survey of the avian populations of the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute (PCCI) during the breeding season by means of point counts and mist-netting. Point counts coupled with mist-netting makes it possible to not only tell which birds are in an area but also demographic information can be collected. We hoped to have recaptures from the previous year to see if any birds returned to PCCI. Continuing last year s study was important because we are now able to make general assumptions of the species and amount of birds present at PCCI. Methods: Point Counts: The first count began on May 21, 2007, with the second beginning July 3, We used the locations for the points from the previous year as a reference point. There were 38 points in total. One to 28 were along the institutes trail system (Figure 1), and were field transects. We split the points into three days 1-14 the first, the second, and the remaining 10 field points on the last day. The points were approximately 200 meters apart. Along the trail we marked our points with flagging for a visual reference so that we could return to it later. For the fields we used an estimate as close to 200 meters apart as possible. The counts began at approximately 6:35 am for the first set, and 6:20 am for the second. The timing for each was within 30 minutes of sunrise in order to coincide with peak bird activity. At each point, we recorded how many

individual birds were seen or heard during a 10 minute window. We included birds that were flyovers for the area even if there home range was not in the area, and marked them as flyovers accordingly. We tried to distinguish between individual birds by utilizing their territorial behavior. In the fields while walking the transects, all birds that were flushed up were also recorded. The species and birds sexes were determined if possible but if unsure of sex the bird was marked as male (Table 1). Mist-Netting: The mist-netting took place from May 17 to July using the points that were determined by the previous point counts. The nets resemble over-sized volleyball nets with very fine nylon mesh. We used nets of three different sizes, 6m, 9m, and 12m in length. Each was approximately 10 feet tall once installed. Five nets were placed approximately 50 meters apart in a circuit if possible. They were placed in areas most likely to have bird traffic. We placed them oriented to areas leading to and from feeding areas, or in areas that had more cover for birds. If possible the nets were placed in a shady area so they were less likely to be seen and more likely to catch birds. After the nets were erect we would walk the circuit approximately every minutes, checking for birds caught in each net. Once a bird was seen caught in the net it was removed and brought back to a central location. The bird s specie and sex were identified and a band of appropriate size was placed on its leg. The band number was then recorded in a field notebook. Its tarsus, wing chord, and culmen were then measured using. Bird weight was measured by placing individuals into a bag and using a hanging scale. The weight of the bag was subtracted from the total amount. Then, the bird was released (Table-2).

Results: Point Counts: During the first point count, 855 individual birds were identified representing 64 different species. In the second point count, 725 individual birds were identified representing 53 different species. Overall, 66 different species were identified on the property of PCCI using point counts. The American Robin was the most widespread bird; it was present at 30 of the 38 points on the property. Mist-Netting: In total, 125 birds were captured in the mist-nets, 3 of which were recaptures from the previous year. There were 30 different species of bird caught in the mist-nets. The most abundant birds that were captured were 10 of Gray Catbird, Veery, and Song Sparrow and 8 of Acadian Flycatcher, American Robin, and Common Yellowthroat. Through the entire summer we only had 3 recaptures from the previous summer. An American Goldfinch, Common Yellowthroat, and a Least Flycatcher were all caught at the same points as they were a year earlier. Discussion: Mist-netting and point counts varied greatly in the amount of birds recorded. With mist-netting, we recorded data from122 birds as compared to the 1580 recorded in point counts. Point counts required no equipment other than a pair of binoculars, whereas mist-netting and banding required specialized nets, as well as, state and federal approval. With mist-netting we were able to record more data on each individual bird, including a unique band number, which has the added benefit of use

in future studies. Bird banding is useful because it provides data on the distribution and movements of species, their relative numbers, annual production, life-span and causes of death (Gustafson 1999). The more we know about such kinds of bird data, the better we will be able to manage and conserve them (Gustafson 1999). While using mist-nets it is assumed that each individual bird has the same chance of hitting an erect net as any other bird in the area; this is not always the case. Many birds that are in an area never actually hit the nets. The birds that spend most of their time either flying low from one location to another, or spend their time foraging low are more likely to hit the nets. More birds were counted in the first point count compared to the second; this may be for many reasons. The first count was during the peak of mating season in spring so males were more likely to be vocalizing to attract a female or to protect their territory. The second point count was during summer so the birds that only mate once a year were relatively quiet. The summer season was also a very dry one, PCCI received very little rain, so the birds that depended on the berries were let down by the dismal berry population of dried up parched berries and in turn did not stay for the second count. Many birds revealed themselves close to the end of the 10 minute mark, possibly feeling comfortable with our presence at a later time than other birds. Birds that were generally quiet or had shorter calls were difficult to record compared to the birds with loud or melodious calls. Comparing between years, the previous year recorded slightly less birds overall, but showed approximately the same amount of species. The second point count last year

revealed more birds than the second count of this year. The 2007 point-counts showed an apparent increase in Scarlet Tanagers and Acadian Flycatchers. Mist-netting this year proved more fruitful than last year with 27 more individuals caught. However, the amount of species was relatively the same. If this study is continued next field season it will be very interesting to see how many birds return and if they stay in the same area as before. The identification and banding of birds on the PCCI property will open the door for future avian studies that could easily focus on an individual species for in-depth research.
