1 Catalog of Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture GIS Data March 2009 Version 1 Compiled by: Bradly Potter

2 Introduction This catalog contains descriptions of GIS data available from the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture. These datasets are found in Joint Venture habitat conservation strategies for shorebirds, landbirds, waterbirds, and waterfowl, as well as an All-bird Implementation Plan. As such, this catalog mirrors the Joint Venture planning documents and is organized by bird group and the all-bird plan. In addition to data used in the Joint Venture plans, other data sets have been acquired and will be organized in future versions of this document. Each dataset is described and potential and proper uses are discussed. Figures using the dataset in the Joint Venture plans are identified by page and figure number. A thumbnail image of each dataset is included as a reference (appearance may be different than image in plans). Thumbnails include the dataset placed over a background containing political boundaries; these boundaries are available upon request. The catalog will be updated as new GIS datasets are created and collected. Check for the most recent version of this catalog. How to request data Datasets can be requested by contacting the Joint Venture Science Office in East Lansing, MI. Please request to: Bradly_Potter@fws.gov or call We ask you allow a month response time, although typical response is less than two weeks. Data will be disseminated by , CD, or DVD depending on file size (sorry no ftp capabilities). Contents Place curser over dataset name, use control key, and click to jump to a section. Dataset name: Winter abundance and distribution for extensive open water waterfowl based on mid-winter inventory counts (relative density) File name: JVFinalProducts\NonBreedingSeasonGuilds \Waterfowl\Winter\MidWinterSurvey Figure: Guild account page 95; Figure B Description: Winter abundance and distribution for waterfowl using extensive open water based on the Midwinter Inventory conducted early January each year. Average counts during for species with >1% of inventoried population were used. Data represents the total count divided by zone area for a crude estimate of density by zone. Uses: Identify zones with a greater relative density of waterfowl that use extensive open water during winter. Data only provides a crude estimate because survey effort is incomplete and not equal across all zones. Data should be used with caution for planning at the regional scale. 52

53 2007 Implementation Plan Datasets Dataset name: Pre-settlement vegetation File name: JVFinalProducts\ImplementationPlan\ Vegetation\Presettlement Figure: Figure 3; page 21 Description: Pre-settlement vegetation based on public land survey notes, soils data, National Wetland Inventory, and historical accounts. Uses: Identify the general type of pre-settlement vegetation within the region. Data was collected from each individual state and merged into a general dataset. The dataset contains various spatial scales. General dataset should only be used for regional display and not site specific planning. Dataset name: Landscape composition File name: JVFinalProducts\ImplementationPlan\ Vegetation\Current2001\nlcd2001 Figure: Figure 4; page 22 Description: Landscape composition based on the 2001 National Land Cover Dataset (land cover derived from Landsat ETM satellite data). Uses: Spatially identify cover types within the region. Data set is collect at a 30 m resolution. See for more information. Dataset name: Value for marsh breeding birds File name: JVFinalProducts\ImplementationPlan\ FocusAreaGridValues\Breeding\wetland Figure: Figure 5a; page 39 Description: Value for marsh breeding birds based on herbaceous wetland breeding bird abundances and habitat models. Uses: Identify high value regions for marsh breeding birds. Areas with high value represent a greater diversity or richness of species, or habitat with high potential suitability for marsh breeding species. Data is a summary of multiple inputs using various spatial scales, thus data should only be used for regional planning. 53
