The 2015 Crafts Competition at the 71st Annual National Convention was a great success. We had more entries this year than in the past and consistent attendance from NAWCC members and the public. Many of our entrants spent a great deal of time in the crafts room, taking time to describe their entries to everyone. We thank the entrants who came from Canada and the United States. Some traveled for two or more days to bring their craftsmanship to Chattanooga, TN. The entries remind us that clocks and watches are pieces of history, art, and jewelry, as well as timekeepers. We recognize that quality and imagination are not lost today. Some people believe that the ability to keep time is humanity s greatest achievement, and the NAWCC has the opportunity to show the world how important accurate time truly has become. We are showing the winners of the Crafts Competition. First, all entrants are winners! Some winners had very complicated entries while others had unique entries. Enjoy their creations in the pages that follow. NAWCC members and visitors of the Crafts Competition voted for their favorite entry. This entry receives a special award known as the People s Choice Award. Frank and Bill Donegan Jr. of Donegan Optical Co. in memory of Bill Donegan Sr. provided the award. In conclusion, we encourage all NAWCC members to consider submitting a project for the 2016 Crafts Competition to be held during the 72nd Annual National Convention in Louisville, KY. 2 Ray Springer (CAN) Class 3, first place: Clock Movements Wood This Hoadley wooden works movement was restored as part of the Phoenix Project, the second place winner in Class 25. The work included cleaning the parts, replacing the wheels and the damaged bushings, and adding new weight cords. The restored dial for the Twiss tallcase clock damaged by fire is the first place winner in Class 13. Class 6, first place: Wood Clock Cases Solid or Veneered This miniature pillar and scroll clock is handmade with working movements. Class 6, second place: Wood Clock Cases Solid or Veneered This miniature tallcase clock is handmade with working movements. Class 6, third place: Wood Clock Cases Solid or Veneered This miniature E. 3 Tsutomu Mark Endo (NE) Class 8, first place: Watch Movements This 18-jewel doctor s watch movement is handmade, except for the mainspring, hairspring, and jewels. Dave Cooper (CO) Class 10, first place: Watch Restoration This restored antique pocket watch has a fitted bull s eye crystal, replated outer case and pendant, sweep hand, center arbor, new minute hand, and repaired hour hand. Roy Burlingame (IL) Class 11, first place: Authentic Replica Clocks This is an authentic replica of an advertising clock. It has movements that not only give the time but also turn the advertising cards at set intervals for people to view. NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin November/December

Edward Bikowitz (MI) Class 12, first place: Clock Restoration This is a restored John Birge triple-decker 8-day, weight-driven clock. The work included repairing and refinishing the veneer as well as cleaning and restoring the movement. Roy Burlingame (IL) Class 12, third place: Clock Restoration George Waterhouse (GA) Class 12, second place: Clock Restoration This is a restored Seth Thomas pillar and scroll clock. 5 Cheryl Springer (CAN) Class 13, first place: Painted Dials This Twiss tallcase wooden works clock dial was restored as part of the Phoenix Project, the second place winner in Class 25. The work included aging the dial s back and front surfaces and painting the dial with oil paints and gesso as per the original. The restored movement for the Twiss tallcase clock damaged by fire is the first place winner in Class 3. Barbara Womack (FL) Class 13, second place: Painted Dials This oil painted dial titled Four Seasons shows miniatures of original scenes, including the eagle. David Lima (OH) Class 14, first place: Reverse Painting on Glass This reverse painting is on an 11'' by 11'' glass. It has a goldleafed circular border and stenciled corners. Dan Havlik (TX) Class 15 first place: Reverse Painting on Glass-Litho Transfer This is a State Street Boston litho transfer illustration with oil paint. David Lima (OH) Class 18, first place: Gold Leafing These gilded columns are from a miniature shelf clock. The 8" long columns have a burnished circular design. Class 20, first place: Wood Carving This miniature Gerandal clock is entirely handmade with working movements. Class 20, third place: Wood Carving This miniature lyre clock is entirely handmade with working movements. Edward Arthur (MD) Class 20, second place: Wood Carving This is a scale model of a Scottish drumhead longcase clock with a fluted column and a carved hood cresting made of solid veneered walnut. 7 Don Bugh (TX) Class 21, first place: Engraving and Decorative Parts This is a resin casting of a top finial from a Joseph Mayer Ball clock. Don Bugh (TX) Class 21, second place: Engraving and Decorative Parts A pair of resin castings was made from an original lion head that adorned Brown Street clocks. Dulen Lee (TX) Class 22, first place: Horological Parts This brass and lead Vienna Regulator clock weight weighs 3 lb. 5 oz. and it is 1-5/8" by 4-1/2". Ken Reindel (TX) Class 22, second place: Horological Parts The Model W is a clean power converter that can accurately power clocks, turntables, shavers, and other devices anywhere in the world up to 60 watts. Included are voltage, frequency, and plug-style conversion. Users who wish to automate their frequency or voltage selection can program this unit remotely. Tsutomo Mark Endo (NE) Class 23, second place: Horological Tools New or Reproduction This mini-depth micrometer accurately measures the depth or length of narrow, small areas. A full rotation measures 0.25 mm or ". Four thimble rotations equals 1 mm or 0.039". Tsutomo Mark Endo (NE) Class 23, first place: Horological Tools New or Reproduction This hairspring truing caliper with needle guide can be handheld or used on a stand. Its thin and narrow arms allow for complete rotation. Tsutomo Mark Endo (NE) Class 23, third place: Horological Tools New or Reproduction This ratcheted key winder has a wind mainspring and set time for key-wind and key-set watches. Patricia Holloway (TX) Class 24, first place: Horological Novelties This activity and coloring book was designed to instill in children an interest in and appreciation for horology. Rebecca Foster (TN) Class 24, second place: Horological Novelties. This is an original interpretation of a E. J. Swayne arch top shelf clock. The graceful lines of the clock inspired the framed art piece using vintage jewelry. Included were an antique pocket watch dial, hands, and bezel to add to the authenticity of the horological design. The columns are fashioned from pieces of an old bracelet, and parts of brooches, earrings, and necklaces are arranged to form the rest of the design. 526 November/December 2015 NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin

9 Carol Tekippe (GA) Class 24, third place: Horological Novelties This creative assemblage of found parts was used to create a clock jewelry box. Atlanta Chapter 24 Class 25, first place: Chapter Clock Restoration The Chapter 24 project involved the restoration of a lighthouse clock. The following members participated in the project: Bernie and Byron Tekippe, Charles Brooks, Christopher Martin, William Knaak, Peter Schreiner, and George Waterhouse. Ontario Chapter 111 Class 25, second place: Chapter Clock Restoration. The Phoenix Project was initiated to reconstruct this historic Twiss tallcase clock owned by Esmond Butler, secretary to six Canadian governors general. The original clock was ravaged by fire, leaving only a burned movement and weights. The movement restoration was described in the Class 3 entry and the first place dial creation in the Class 13 entry. The clock case work included fabricating and installing upper case moldings on which the new hood would sit as well as the door, coiled wire hinges, an antique lock, key, and bezel. The clock works well and keeps good time. NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin November/December
