2 OUR MISSION Since its inception in 2003, Anji Mountain has established itself as the finest source of area rugs and office chairmats made from both natural fibers including jute, bamboo, seagrass, sisal and cork and recycled materials. A family business, we are founded on the principle that only sustainable uses of the earth s natural resources can be tolerated. The astonishing renewability and versatility of natural fibers and recycled materials creates lots of new ecologically positive possibilities at a time when they are desperately needed. It s our mission to bring these wonderful resources to as wide an audience as possible. 2 VOLUME 14

NATURAL FIBERS have been used by mankind for millennia to create a myriad of useful products. It makes perfect sense that in the pre-industrial world this would be so.

But, in our sophisticated, post-industrial society why does there seem to be a rekindled interest in products made from natural fibers? We have a few thoughts on the subject.

Because natural fibers are easily decomposed with the help of universal fungi and bacteria which help the fibers fully biodegrade.

BAMBOO Bamboo is remarkable in its renewability many species can be harvested in as little as four years. By contrast, hardwoods like oak take at least 40 years to mature before they can be harvested.

The species of bamboo used in our products (Moso) is sustainably harvested in its native habitat in the Anji Mountains of China.

JUTE Nicknamed the Golden Fiber for its beautiful luster, Jute fibers are characteristically long, soft and shiny and are among the strongest, most flexible vegetable fibers on the planet.

Jute is predominantly farmed by approximately four million small farmers in India and Bangladesh and supports hundreds of thousands of workers in jute manufacturing (from raw material to yarn and

Natural fibers were used because they were available and plentiful. But, in our sophisticated, post-industrial society why does there seem to be a rekindled interest in products made from natural fibers? We have a few thoughts on the subject. Products made of natural fiber can be tossed in the garbage guilt-free when their useful life is up. Why? Because natural fibers are easily decomposed with the help of universal fungi and bacteria which help the fibers fully biodegrade. Furthermore, natural fibers do not offgas harmful VOC s (volatile organic compounds) like synthetic fibers so choosing natural fibers helps create a more healthy living environment. When bamboo is harvested, a new shoot will grow from its extensive root system with no need for additional planting or cultivation. The species of bamboo used in our products (Moso) is sustainably harvested in its native habitat in the Anji Mountains of China. Bamboo is also extremely durable its fibers are far stronger than wood fibers and much less likely to warp from changing atmospheric conditions. SISAL Sisal fiber exhibits a notably lustrous sheen and is creamy white. It measures up to a little over 3 feet in length and is exceptionally strong, durable and stretchable. Sisal is one of the most hardwearing natural fibers and is an excellent choice for floor covering. It does not absorb moisture easily and resists saltwater deterioration so it is a good choice for seaside home decor. Sustainably harvested in Southern China where the hot, dry climate offers perfect growing conditions. SEAGRASS Seagrass is an abundant marine grass with thick, flat and smooth fibers. It exhibits a splendid range of natural color ranging from green to brown it is never dyed. Its fiber is extraordinary durable and is a perfect fit for high traffic areas. It is naturally water-resistant and does an excellent job repelling stains as well. It has a long and distinguished history as an important and treasured natural material in both furniture and floor coverings. WOOL Wool is, quite simply, a magnificent fiber whose versatility and beauty is unmatched when it comes to floor covering. It is, of course, an animal fiber shorn from sheep. It resists crushing due to a natural, permanent crimp so it wears well and handles the rigors of a busy home. It is naturally antistatic, flame resistant and moisture resistant and cleans easily. It is naturally soft and feels warm in the winter and cool in the summer. RECYCLED MATERIALS Scraps of virgin cotton, Indian saree material and leather from the textile industry. Paper pulp from recycled paper. PET made from recycled plastic beverage bottles. These are just a few of the recycled materials we use in our innovative products. Recycling is a winwin for the consumer, the community and the planet. Using recycled materials in manufacturing helps to divert waste from our landfills and waterways and also stimulates local economies by creating recyclingrelated jobs. NATURAL COMPOSITE What to do with all of the bamboo sawdust that is a by-product of the bamboo flooring and furniture industries? By blending it with resin a composite is created which we ve used in our innovative Natural Composite. Similar to the popular, stylish and durable outdoor composite decking our Natural Composite distinguishes itself by using the sawdust of sustainable, highly renewable bamboo (see more on Page 42).
