8 Vintage Finishes are Aged, not Distressed The challenge of Vintage finishes is replicating authenticity; simulating the beautifully aged finish of a year old antique. Adds years of wear or aging to a new product. Realistic tells the story of the life of the piece. Avoids repetitive markings - could that really happen & does it make sense? Replicates the patina of the Orange Shellac Finish or French polishing (depending on the color).

9 Vintage Finishes are Aged, not Distressed Replicates normal patterns of wear there would be little or no rub through, and less patina on the top of the cabinet than would be seen on the toe kick. Cleaning products 100 years ago contained lye which tarnished the finishes closer to the floor during mopping. Exposed edges of doors would have more worn and rounded edges when compared to doors on Inset cabinetry.

10 The finish is designed to be consistently inconsistent The colour, amount of crackle, quantity of aging will vary slightly from piece to piece and door to door. This is the desired effect!

11 What is Typical Distressing: Most manufacturers are guilty of thrashing cabinet doors and components with a chain and bolts, consistently from top to bottom. Making multiple splits and open joints on the same spot on every door, and all of them exactly 3 long. Some even employ the use of distressing rollers to be more consistent. Wormholes on every piece of wood, all the same size and direction, Rasp markings, 2 apart, A perfect colored finish.

12 Design Concept Vintage furniture pieces would be typically acquired piece by piece or handed down from family members. These furniture like cabinets would be incorporated into unfitted designs. Less is More - Vintage finishes are used to Highlight Islands, stand alone hoods, sink bases etc. The majority of the kitchen should be finished in a more neutral color. This preserves the look & saves money.

17 A proprietary blend of product and process that produces a high gloss, smooth, polished, mirror like finish ( sheen). This finish consists of multiple coats of finish with sanding and processing between coats, then ultimately hand polished. The finished product meets or exceeds the scratch/mar resistance properties of Polyester, or similar finishes. Hydra Gloss can be matched to any colour. Lead Time for Hydra Gloss: Standard Lead Time + 2 Weeks.

18 Bleached Oak Bleached Walnut Olive Ebony These are Italian designed and manufactured melamine colours. They have a trendy low sheen appearance.

19 Elmwood offers 7 species of environmentally responsible engineered veneer made to resemble other natural species. This is a wood veneer that is free of natural wood blemishes such as mineral streaks, knots etc. It is intended to be more consistent in colour and grain than natural wood species. 20 Fast growing, plantation grown species such as Poplar, Obeche, Koto & others are mounted on a giant lathe, then peeled into rotary cut veneers. These sheets are clipped into 26 W leaves that are dried and stacked. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry

21 The leaves are stacked into stainless steel cages separated by thin wires, then exposed to dye, thus ensuring consistency every time. The cage is immersed into a pressurized, heated vat of water soluble vegetable based dye. This system is controlled so that each leaf is given the correct amount of time to allow the dye to completely penetrate. Once the desired color has been achieved, the leaves are unloaded from the vat, dried and given a final inspection before going to the gluing stage. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry

22 Depending on the pattern that is being produced, a combination of dyed veneers are glued together. A formula is followed that outlines a sequence for the dyed veneers to be stacked together to create the desired pattern. There is a layer of dyed glue between each leaf of veneer which creates the contrast as part of the grain definition. Once the stack has been laid up, it is then put into a high pressure press to bond the leaves together creating a large rectangular block. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry

23 The repeatability of each pattern is achieved by the shape of the laminated block. The leaves of the dyed veneers are stacked into a mold that has a top and a bottom. The mold is pressed together forming the block of the desired pattern. The pattern at the left yields straight grain similar to quarter or rift cut veneers. The other 4 blocks would yield patterns with 1,2,3 or 4 heart, or flame shaped patterns similar to flat cut veneers. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry

24 The block now runs across a large blade slicing leaves of veneer. The veneer is now ready to be further processed into spliced faces for lamination onto particleboard, MDF & plywood cores. Elmwood Fine Custom Cabinetry

26 Why Buy MDF? MDF will not expand and contract with temperature changes. MDF will have very minimal swelling if it gets wet. The MDF that we use is rated with what they call a soak test. After 24 hours of being submerged in water, raw MDF may expand only 4 6% in thickness. Painted finishes on MDF will not crack. Smooth finish without grain patterns coming through. Mullion doors will not have gaps where the mullion touches the rail, because it is all one piece. MDF competitively priced.

27 Why Buy MDF? MDF is green 100% recycled material. The material used to create MDF is a by-product from softwood lumber mills. This means that no tree is cut down with the sole purpose of becoming MDF fibers. No formaldehyde added product. All the MDF that Elmwood & our suppliers uses is both FSC and CARB II compliant. Our supplier of MDF doors is very conscious of the environment and has taken steps to reduced their impact on the land fill. All their shavings are used by an accredited agency that uses the dust to clean up liquid waste spills. They also recycle most of their shipping supplies such as wood pallets, cardboard, etc.

32 We now offer a modification that will combine pilasters into an up and over style surround. This modification is for Flat, Angled & Beveled pilasters. We recommend designing in fillers for shadow lines around the cabinetry to create the perfect fit. Larger surrounds will be dry fitted at the factory and shipped flat for re-assembly on the job site.
