ALLY WATSON : IAMTAN0001 I always had aspirations of going to art school, as it turns out, my creative side and strength in design helped me to succeed in programming instead. Nowadays I use my knowledge to empower young girls around the country to pursue a career in coding. Tech is not just for guys and now, more than ever, we need to arm our kids with digital literacy, mathematics and coding skills for the future. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it enables me to combine my love of art, design and technology to inspire the next generation of female coders. ALLY WATSON IS A.NET DEVELOPER AT DEEPEND, A DIGITAL AGENCY SPECIALISING IN DIGITAL STRATEGY IN MELBOURNE. SHE IS ALSO CO-FOUNDER OF THE SUCCESSFUL ORGANISATION CODE LIKE A GIRL.
BEN WATERHOUSE : IAMTAN0002 My company uses data every day to answer questions about the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Interpreting the data is a way for us to solve problems. Sometimes it helps a new treatment get launched, or it assures us that a drug is being used the way it was intended and sometimes it helps explain the changes in treatment for a particular disease. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it structures our thinking and gives us the tools to answer questions that help us move forward. BEN WATERHOUSE IS THE OWNER OF THE SUCCESSFUL COMPANY MODEL SOLUTIONS WHICH USES DATA TO ANALYSE INFORMATION ON PHARMACEUTICAL DRUG USE IN AUSTRALIA.
CASSIE PENNICUIK : IAMTAN0003 Like many Victorians I grew up fire ready : recognising the risks and always being prepared. We continue to understand more than ever about bushfires with each season; the danger, the threats and the challenges. My job involves risk analysis and management, complex budget management, logic and problem solving for some of the Country Fire Authority s largest projects, all focussed on improving our service delivery to the community. Maths allows us to optimise our response times, which can help to save lives. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s keeping communities safe, allowing our members to protect life and property. CASSIE PENNICUIK IS A PROGRAM MANAGER FOR THE CFA. SHE RUNS THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE FOR CFA S SERVICE DELIVERY DIRECTORATE (FIRE & EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT).
CHARLES GRAY : IAMTAN0004 After almost 20 years in the music industry, I finally went back to uni to study maths after being talked out of it numerous times. Some people find it a strange combination, but it s really not as far-fetched as it may seem. Music is mathematical and in retrospect this may be why I was drawn to it in the first place. Nowadays, I m researching in the fi eld of meta-analysis. In any given moment I could be working on code, deriving mathematical equations, creating interactive simulations or discovering the remarkably creative world of data visualisation. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s made me a part of something, something that is going to change the future. CHARLES GRAY IS A SESSIONAL LECTURER AND DEMONSTRATOR AT LA TROBE UNIVERSITY. SHE IS CURRENTLY COMPLETING HER PHD WITH A RESEARCH FOCUS ON META-ANALYSIS.
JANINE STEWART : IAMTAN0005 My choice of studying mathematics and working in education has enabled me to travel the world and get paid to do it. I have met and worked with many fantastic people, some of whom remain my closest friends. Mathematics is the common component of humanity s shared culture, a universal language that empowers us to become problem solvers in a world fraught with problems such as climate change, food security and health care. Mathematics can tackle these. Ultimately though, maths is just a really fun thing to do. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s humanity s tool for making sense of an uncertain universe. JANINE STEWART IS A SENIOR MATHEMATICS TEACHER AND YEAR 12 PATRON AT ST COLUMBA ANGLICAN SCHOOL, PORT MACQUARIE. IN 2016 SHE RECEIVED A CHOOSEMATHS TEACHING AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE. JANINE HAS A PHD IN THE AREA OF NONLINEAR PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS. Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)
KARIN DITCHFIELD : IAMTAN0011 When I was young, we moved around a lot. It was always diffi cult to adapt to a new culture and learn a new language, however mathematics is the same no matter where you are in the world. Today I m dealing with data every day, but it s not the numbers that excite me, it s the opportunities they present. Critical thinking, problem solving and strategic decision making help me to build our company s portfolio of mining assets. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s a global language in today s fast paced world. KARIN DITCHFIELD IS A SPECIALIST IN THE PORTFOLIO STRATEGY AND DEVELOPMENT TEAM AT BHP BILLITON.
KARLIE NOON : IAMTAN0007 I was the first Indigenous student to complete a double degree in Maths and Physics in NSW, but my life wasn t always smooth sailing. Leaving school early I returned to couch-surf my way through Year 12 and at uni fell in love with astronomy. Working on CSIRO s Indigenous STEM Education project I combined two of my other loves: Maths and Indigenous education. My skills in numbers and statistics helped to determine education trends and made sure we were meeting project goals which meant more Indigenous kids could study STEM. Recently I was awarded a scholarship to work in CSIRO s Astronomy and Space Science team, a dream come true. I always wanted to stick it to the people who judged or bullied me because I was overweight, poor and different. Well, I guess I have. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it allows me to lead the way for other Indigenous people. KARLIE NOON COMPLETED A DOUBLE DEGREE IN MATHS AND PHYSICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE. CURRENTLY SHE IS RESEARCHING FOR A MASTERS IN THE FIELD OF ASTROPHYSICS. Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)
KYLIE HOLLINS : IAMTAN0008 I was a marine scientist for several years and saw first-hand some of the problems that have an effect on the environment. Now I use mathematics to try and solve some of these problems. Cutting edge technologies allow us to operate activities on our mine sites by remote control. Site operators mine the iron ore and my team digitally mines the data to find ways to improve processes. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it allows us to find new ways of doing things and make technological advances. KYLIE HOLLINS IS THE SUPERINTENDENT, INTEGRATED PRODUCTION AND REMOTE OPERATIONS AT BHP BILLITON AND WORKS IN THE REMOTE OPERATIONS CENTRE IN PERTH.
LYNDAL HENDEN : IAMTAN0009 When I was young I wanted to become a meteorologist so I went to university to study maths. While there I discovered a world of new things that interested me, particularly medical data. Data connects families and patterns pinpoint genomes that map family history. It s like solving a human puzzle that could eradicate diseases for future generations. Applying mathematical knowledge to real-life medical data means that I am able to help people. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s at the forefront of medical research and can change lives. LYNDAL HENDEN GRADUATED FROM MASSEY UNIVERSITY, NEW ZEALAND WITH A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) MAJORING IN MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS AND IS CURRENTLY STUDYING HER PHD AT THE WALTER AND ELIZA HALL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH.
DR SASKIA FREYTAG : IAMTAN0010 I grew up in Germany and spent weekends conducting experiments with my dad and investigating the theories behind them. Nowadays I don t do quite the same types of experiments, but I still love searching for answers and making sense of complex problems. The human brain is one of the final frontiers in science and I use data and mathematical models to explore areas we never thought possible. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it will allow us to complete our picture of how the human brain operates. DR SASKIA FREYTAG IS A RESEARCHER AT THE WALTER AND ELIZA HALL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH. SASKIA HAS A PHD IN STATISTICS AND CURRENTLY WORKS ON HIGH DIMENSIONAL DATA ANALYSIS EXPLORING HOW GENES ARE EXPRESSED IN THE HUMAN BRAIN. Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)
LEE TURNLEY : IAMTAN0006 Numbers play a huge role in my work. There is a theory and set of equations behind most of what I do. For me, mathematics provides tools to help build cutting edge technologies that make lighter, stronger materials that improve fuel economy. Put simply, numbers represent the future of air transport. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s changing the way we travel and it s building the next generation of green aircraft. LEE TURNLEY IS A COMPOSITE RESEARCH ENGINEER AT BOEING RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA. LEE IS ALSO A MEMBER OF BOEING S FAST-TRACK LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.
LILY SERNA : IAMTAN0012 It s not exactly a natural progression to go from studying a maths degree to a nightly television program, but Letters and Numbers has given me the amazing opportunity to share the wonderful world of maths with the wider community. People often have a perception of what a mathematician should be. I like to challenge that stereotype. and that s why I CHOOSEMATHS, because it s MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS, it s a way of teaching the brain to break down problems in a systematic and logical way. LILY SERNA IS A MATHEMATICIAN AND DATA ANALYST AT ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE COMPANY, ATLASSIAN. SHE IS BEST KNOWN AS THE RESIDENT NUMBERS EXPERT ON SBS S LETTERS AND NUMBERS WITH DAVID ASTLE AND RICHARD MORECROFT.
YOU ARE MORE THAN A NUMBER : IAMTAN0013 MATHS IS MORE THAN NUMBERS. IT S ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE, SOLVING THE BIG ISSUES FACING THE PLANET AND FINDING NEW WAYS TO USE DATA. LOOK FOR CAREERS INSPIRATION IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE CHOSEN MATHEMATICS TO BUILD A REWARDING PROFESSIONAL LIFE. WHEN YOU CHOOSE MATHS A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES OPENS UP TO YOU.
SAVING THE PLANET : IAMTAN0014 DATA CAN HELP US MAKE BETTER DECISIONS FOR CLIMATE ACTION. BUT IT S NOT THE DATA THAT WILL SAVE US, IT S THE ANALYSIS & USAGE OF THE DATA. Global Pulse is a flagship innovation initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General on big data. Its vision is a future in which big data is harnessed safely and responsibly as a public good. Its mission is to accelerate discovery, development and scaled adoption of big data innovation for sustainable development and humanitarian action.
FUTURE JOBS : IAMTAN0015 BUSINESSES COMPETING IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY DRIVEN BY DATA, DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES & INNOVATION WILL NEED MORE EMPLOYEES TRAINED IN STEM. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT 75% OF THE FASTEST GROWING OCCUPATIONS NOW REQUIRE THESE SKILLS.
