3 Agenda 20 minute overview of the IoT, history of IoT, examples of use today, future projections and the technology building blocks that will be shown during the meeting. 40 minute 'hands on' demonstration of a simple set of sensor technologies: i) Demonstrate the TI sensor tag with temperature, humidity, pressure, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer capability. ii) Demonstrate the TI sensor tag communicating data to a Raspberry pi iii) Hosted by an Arduino board, demonstrate the adafruit nrf8001 low powered bluetooth chipset communicating with a ios device iv) Demonstrate a set of analogue switches connected using an Arduino development board to a local web server 30 minute group discussion on experiences and insights to the unfolding of this disruptive technology. 3

5 Overview of IoT A brief history, the beginnings 1832: electromagnetic telegraph and in 1833 Friedrich & Wilhelm Weber invented their own code to cx 1200m within Göttingen Electronic sensing of the world can be traced to the discovery of the photovoltaic effect 1844: Samuel Morse sends the first morse code public telegraph message "What hath God wrought?" from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore Arpanet 1974 Beginnings of TCP/IP 1978 IC microprocessor integrated ADC emerges 1989 Berners-Lee proposes the WWW With thanks to postscapes and electronicdesign 1990 John Romkey creates first Internet device, a Toaster 5

6 Overview of IoT A brief history, the eureka and acceleration of innovation 1995: The Internet goes commercial with Amazon and Echobay (Ebay) 1997: Paul Saffo's prescient article "Sensors: The Next Wave of Infotech Innovation" 1998: Google is incorporated The Internet of Things term is coined by Kevin Ashton executive director of the Auto-ID Center: 2003: RFID is deployed on a massive scale by the US Department of Defense in their Savi program and Walmart in the commercial world. 2009: U.S. National Intelligence Council listed the Internet of Things as one of the 6 "Disruptive Civil Technologies" with potential impacts on US interests out to : IPV6 public launch - The new protocol allows for 2^128 (approximately 340 undecillion or 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456) addresses Arduino and other hardware platforms mature and make the IoT accessible to DIY'ers taking interest in the topic With thanks to postscapes and electronicdesign 6

7 Looking back at the history of the IoT we can see many familiarities with early IT The building blocks and protocols predate the Internet by many decades Devices come in many shapes and forms - Industrial equipment, vehicles, consumer appliances - With probably unknown s/w stacks RTOS, SCADA, and embedded Microsoft Op Sys - Security is one of a Trusting approach to applications / connections Protocols probably alien to traditional IT folk - CoAP, DDS, OPC, XMPP, Modbus, Physical systems with data processing and analysis - Factories, municipal water / sewer, vehicle fleets - Temperature, pressure, shock, vibration, humidity 7

11 How the market landscape is seen at the moment; maker & consumer of things Major Types of IoT Firms Equipment Manufacturers IoT Industry Enablers IT Firms And the pipe fillers! Equipment Manufacturers Moving to higher value spaces, Sell more hardware Industrial Equipment Maximize operating efficiency Predictive maintenance Provide new services / outsourcing Consumer Appliances Improve customer satisfaction Create stickier customers IoT Industry Enablers Firms that specialize in e.g. Industrial Automation Often start-up, cloud-based Building ecosystems IT Firms Leveraging existing investments Deep expertise in IT See the Internet of Things as IT-enabled devices Most of their IT experience is applicable to IoT 11

13 And according to Google, IoT continues to trend ever upwards! 13

14 with buyers (according to Gartner in the USA) actively pursuing an IoT strategy Adoption 61% of organizations are actively pursuing IoT initiatives. Actively Pursuing Not Considering N=3568 (Weighted) Drivers and Barriers Top IoT Drivers 1. Lower Operational Costs 2. Better customer service and support 3. Customer acquisition/retention 4. Business process efficiency 5. Product/service improvement and innovation 34% of respondents cite data security concerns as the number one barrier. Budgets 6.8% of the average IT budgets is being allocated to IoT initiatives... N=3568 (Weighted)...and respondents plan to work with 6 main vendors over the next 2 years N=2194 (Weighted) 14 14

15 But what of the many inhibitors? Nothing new here! 1) Better Data Older assets without sensors Varying number of sensors on devices. Sensor accuracy / jitter 2) Connectivity for rural / remote / wireless devices High cost / limited bandwidth for satellite and cellular connections 3) Integrating data from various systems to get a complete picture Linkage & Sampling interval mismatch 4) New types of sensor input Video of machine operation / operators Presence zones / ibeacon 5) Security / Privacy Differences between IT and Operational Security concerns Should machines verify the tech who is working on them? Many RTOS and SCADA systems were designed before interconnections became pervasive and so are naturally trusting 6) Cultural changes New work patterns & skills 7) Ownership of data generated Asset Manufacturer or Asset Owner Warranty claim / lease maintenance 15

17 So to connect a sensor, you need an IoT basic development platform 17

18 And there is a board for all seasons A=Simple, incredible popular, flexible, can interface to almost everything; not good for incredible complex projects R=Essentially a low powered linux computer, GUI M/Media projects. Has limited options to i/f with ext sensors or buttons B=Combination of the 2. Good for complex project; but without complex graphics
