Exploration and development drilling operations in the Powder River and Big Horn Basins in Wyoming, the D-J Basin in Colorado, the Montana and Utah Overthrust, the Williston Basin in North Dakota, the Altamont-Bluebell Field in Utah and various locations in Nebraska, Kansas, West Texas, Alabama, South Louisiana and Nevada (Approximately forty wells drilled in the fourteen-month period.) Significant Achievements: On an exploratory well in the Uintah overthrust, the inverted Precambrian thrust sheets were successfully penetrated to permit evaluation of the Paleozoic sub-thrust. Due to extreme hole instability, other wells in this area either failed to penetrate the thrust sheets or did so at substantially greater time and cost than the Husky well. We successfully drilled an exploratory well from a location at 9,200 ft. surface elevation in the Manti-LaSal National Forest near Price, Utah. Due to the high surface location, severe loss of circulation necessitated the continual use of a parasite, air injection tubing 3

4 string. Using this aeration technique, it was possible to evaluate all of the desired geologic objectives. Drilling performance (time and cost) records were established in virtually every operating area. A 20% reduction in producing lease operating expenses was achieved by establishing targets for each district and making the district superintendents accountable for meeting those targets. July 1981 March RESOURCES INVESTMENT CORPORATION Vice President - Engineering and Production Denver, Colorado Directed the operating, engineering and purchasing functions associated with the drilling, completion and producing operations for the company. (Production operated by Resources Investment Corporation amounted to approximately 2,000 BOPD and 22 MMCFPD of gas.) Exploration and development drilling operations in the deep Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma, onshore and inland waters of South Louisiana, North Louisiana, the Powder River and Green River Basins in Wyoming, the Val Verde Basin in West Texas and several areas in Utah, Oklahoma and North Dakota Significant Achievements: Drilling costs in all areas of the company's activities were reduced. A savings of over $4MM was achieved in one year (1982). The most significant improvement in drilling performance was realized on a 10,400 ft. well in the Val Verde Basin in West Texas. The well drilled by Resources Investment reached TD in 23 days. The best performance by any offset operator was 60 days. The shorter drilling time resulted in a cost saving of approximately $875,000. The number of unsuccessful development well completions was significantly reduced by establishing a policy of analyzing the economics of development drilling proposals and associated completion attempts. We established a policy of preparing an annual budget for the production department. This budget included forecasts of capital expenditures, general and administrative expenses, lease operating expenses and revenues. A procedure for identifying and evaluating all marginal and cash loss wells was established. 4

6 An uncommon 14,000 ft. exploratory well in the Wyoming overthrust belt was successfully drilled. The unique characteristic of this well was that the selected bottom hole location for the objective reservoir fell beneath the peak of Prater Mountain (elevation 8,400 feet). Due to surface restrictions in the National Forest, it was necessary to place the surface location approximately one mile from the bottom hole target. Although the formation dips exceeded 60 o, the well was successfully directionally drilled to the desired target for less than the AFE'd cost. Reservoir performance and downhole flow mechanics models were analyzed in an offshore Texas blowout, determining the most effective kill technique. A plan for drilling a relief well was developed, and a comprehensive kill plan was designed for the above blowout. Therefore, the design of these types of wells had to be approved by the general manager of production in Dallas.) Prepared contingency plans for well control and evacuation of nearby residents while drilling a 20,000 ft., Smackover, sour gas well in Mississippi 6

Supervised drilling operations on several deep, high-pressured wells in the Delaware Basin in Southeastern New Mexico (As most of these wells were exploratory wells, penetration of unexpected high-pressure reservoirs required the frequent use of well control procedures.) Supervised field tests of several Shell research laboratories projects: Extended nozzle bits were developed by Royal Dutch Shell's Rijswijk Laboratory in Holland to improve penetration rates. The tests were conducted to determine under what conditions these bits would be profitable. Shell Development's "Linear Approximation Method" of determining optimum drilling techniques was tested to determine the most effective weight on bit, rotary speed and bit type. An asphalt emulsion mud was developed by engineers at Shell Development Laboratories in Houston to provide a fast drilling fluid with fluid loss control. 10

11 Water influx during air drilling operations is a significant problem. Shell Development Company developed several different formulations of "water shut-off fluids" that were designed to be squeezed into the water zones. Field tests were conducted on a number of air-drilled holes after encountering water flows. Supervised underbalanced drilling operations on several deep wells in the Delaware Basin (In certain parts of the basin, it is necessary to drill through high-pressure gas reservoirs with zones, having low fracture pressures, exposed. Underbalanced drilling was a new technique, and the necessary equipment and techniques were just being developed.) Tests of a "Water Content Monitor" were conducted on an air-drilled hole in central Texas. This device detected minute traces of water in the return air stream and allowed mist drilling to commence before serious hole stability problems occurred. "Ultra-Clear-Water" drilling fluids were tested on a number of wells in the division. A $100,000 reduction in drilling costs was achieved on one test.
