Determine optimum drilling practices and casing programs for development drilling projects Design completion techniques, materials and equipment for high-temperature (+400 o F), high-pressure (+17,000 psi) H 2 S and CO 2 environments Analyze well test data Investigate effects of produced fluid velocities on tubular corrosion in retrograde condensate, volatile oil and wet gas wells containing acid gases Design directional drilling programs, including sidetracks from existing well bores, field development from pad drill sites and offshore platform operations Analyze corrosion of downhole tubular goods and tools Analyze tubing stresses and packer loadings that occur during completion and producing operations Analyze problems relating to cementing operations Provide evaluation of open-hole well logs Develop plans for underbalance drilling projects, including techniques, materials and equipment Analyze transient reservoir pressure buildup Provide forecasts of production and revenue on producing properties Provide expert witness testimony in lawsuits involving drilling and completion engineering and operations March 1983 May HUSKY OIL COMPANY Mid-Continent Division Drilling and Production Manager Denver, Colorado Managed all drilling, completion and producing operations within the division (Production operated by this division of Husky amounted to approximately 7,600 BOPD and 7.5 MMCFPD of gas.) Exploration and development drilling operations in the Powder River and Big Horn Basins in Wyoming, the D-J Basin in Colorado, the Montana and Utah Overthrust, the Williston Basin in North Dakota, the Altamont-Bluebell Field in Utah and various locations in Nebraska, Kansas, West Texas, Alabama, South Louisiana and Nevada (Approximately forty wells drilled in the fourteen-month period.) Significant Achievements: On an exploratory well in the Uintah overthrust, the inverted Precambrian thrust sheets were successfully penetrated to permit evaluation of the Paleozoic sub-thrust. Due to extreme hole instability, other wells in this area either failed to penetrate the thrust sheets or did so at substantially greater time and cost than the Husky well. We successfully drilled an exploratory well from a location at 9,200 ft. surface elevation in the Manti-LaSal National Forest near Price, Utah. Due to the high surface location, severe loss of circulation necessitated the continual use of a parasite, air injection tubing 3
string. Using this aeration technique, it was possible to evaluate all of the desired geologic objectives. Drilling performance (time and cost) records were established in virtually every operating area. A 20% reduction in producing lease operating expenses was achieved by establishing targets for each district and making the district superintendents accountable for meeting those targets. July 1981 March RESOURCES INVESTMENT CORPORATION Vice President - Engineering and Production Denver, Colorado Directed the operating, engineering and purchasing functions associated with the drilling, completion and producing operations for the company. (Production operated by Resources Investment Corporation amounted to approximately 2,000 BOPD and 22 MMCFPD of gas.) Exploration and development drilling operations in the deep Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma, onshore and inland waters of South Louisiana, North Louisiana, the Powder River and Green River Basins in Wyoming, the Val Verde Basin in West Texas and several areas in Utah, Oklahoma and North Dakota Significant Achievements: Drilling costs in all areas of the company's activities were reduced. A savings of over $4MM was achieved in one year (1982). The most significant improvement in drilling performance was realized on a 10,400 ft. well in the Val Verde Basin in West Texas. The well drilled by Resources Investment reached TD in 23 days. The best performance by any offset operator was 60 days. The shorter drilling time resulted in a cost saving of approximately $875,000. The number of unsuccessful development well completions was significantly reduced by establishing a policy of analyzing the economics of development drilling proposals and associated completion attempts. We established a policy of preparing an annual budget for the production department. This budget included forecasts of capital expenditures, general and administrative expenses, lease operating expenses and revenues. A procedure for identifying and evaluating all marginal and cash loss wells was established. 4
April 1981 July HPC, INC. Rocky Mountain Division Operations Manager Denver, Colorado Managed all drilling, completion and producing operations within the division. (Production operated by HPC, Incorporated amounted to approximately 7,300 BOPD and 16 MMCFPD of gas.) Exploration and development drilling operations in the Powder River and Green River Basins in Wyoming and the Williston Basin in North Dakota January 1981 March SUNMARK EXPLORATION CO. Manager of Domestic operations Dallas, Texas Managed all drilling, completion and producing operations for SUNMARK within the Continental United States Exploration and field delineation drilling operations in the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Eastern Montana, the Delaware Basin and Permian Basins in West Texas, the Ouachita overthrust area of Southern Oklahoma, eastern Arkansas, South Louisiana, Illinois, Kentucky, East Texas and the Wyoming overthrust belt March 1977 January TEXAS PACIFIC OIL COMPANY Manager of Drilling Operations Dallas, Texas Managed and directed activities of Texas Pacific's Dallas-based drilling department (In fiscal years 1979 and 1980, 218 wells were drilled at a cost of approximately $123MM.) Exploration and development drilling operations in the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming, the Wyoming overthrust, the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana, the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma, the Ouachita overthrust in Southern Oklahoma and West Texas, the Delaware and Permian Basins in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico and various locations in California, Mississippi, South Louisiana, East Texas, South Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky 5
An uncommon 14,000 ft. exploratory well in the Wyoming overthrust belt was successfully drilled. The unique characteristic of this well was that the selected bottom hole location for the objective reservoir fell beneath the peak of Prater Mountain (elevation 8,400 feet). Due to surface restrictions in the National Forest, it was necessary to place the surface location approximately one mile from the bottom hole target. Although the formation dips exceeded 60 o, the well was successfully directionally drilled to the desired target for less than the AFE'd cost. Reservoir performance and downhole flow mechanics models were analyzed in an offshore Texas blowout, determining the most effective kill technique. A plan for drilling a relief well was developed, and a comprehensive kill plan was designed for the above blowout. March 1972 February TEXAS PACIFIC OIL COMPANY Drilling Operations Supervisor ( ) Drilling Manager ( ) Dallas, Texas Provided both drilling operations and engineering support to the district personnel who were responsible for planning and conducting the company's exploratory and development drilling operations, as well as drilling engineering support to the international division of the company District exploration and development drilling operations in the Delaware and Permian Basins in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico, West Central Texas, Mississippi, South Louisiana, Canadian overthrust belt, the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming, Illinois, the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma, and the Arkoma Basin in Eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas International drilling operations in the North Sea (UK), United Arab Emirates (Dubai), the Gulf of Thailand, Kenya, offshore Spain (Mediterranean Sea) and offshore Philippines (Philippine Sea) Reviewed and suggested appropriate changes in all well plans made in the districts that required approval of the general manager of production. (Although the districts had the responsibility of conducting all of the drilling operations within their areas, the staff level and experience in designing and operating deep, high-pressure wells in each district was not adequate. Therefore, the design of these types of wells had to be approved by the general manager of production in Dallas.) Prepared contingency plans for well control and evacuation of nearby residents while drilling a 20,000 ft., Smackover, sour gas well in Mississippi 6
Established technical specifications for selection of materials to be used in sour gas service for all of TPOC operations Prepared a well control manual that established equipment specifications and operational procedures to be used on all TPOC drilling, completion, and workover operations Prepared a standard TPOC drilling contract form and bid specifications to be applicable to both daywork and footage contracts Established drilling cost control and accounting system for all TPOC operated drilling operations Provided engineering support to the TPOC international team in negotiations with Vietcong regime for offshore leases in the South China Sea Designed tubular goods, wellhead equipment, and downhole completion equipment for a high-temperature (450+ o F) well in the Gulf of Thailand Prepared operational completion procedures for the above well in the Gulf of Thailand Revised existing computer programs for analysis of drill ship mooring systems and marine riser design to apply to a specific semi-submersible rig operating in the North Sea Designed mooring system tensioning and marine riser criteria for semi-submersible rig drilling in the North Sea Prepared proposal to TPOC executive management for reorganization of the company's drilling staff into a centralized drilling department located in the Dallas office June 1969 March SHELL OIL COMPANY Division Drilling Superintendent Onshore Division (Mississippi and North Louisiana) New Orleans, Louisiana Supervised drilling and completion operations on ultra-deep sour gas wells Approved all plans and supervised all field activities associated with the drilling and completion operations (actual on-site supervision [in the field] amounted to approximately 50% of the time) Prepared drilling contracts and bid specifications for all of the rigs required to conduct Shell's drilling programs in the onshore division Evaluated daywork bids and awarded contracts on all drilling rigs used in Shell's operations in the onshore division Supervised the work activities of thirteen Shell drilling foremen Supervised the drilling of two directional "kill" wells for a 21,000 ft., sour gas blowout in Piney Woods, Mississippi Supervised the successful kill operation of the above blowout (The kill was accomplished through a planned intersection of one of the "kill" wells and the wellbore of the blowout at a depth of approximately 10,500 ft. Over twenty thousand sacks of 20 7
lb/gal, timed set cement were pumped into the blowout wellbore through the wellbore of the "kill" well.) Worked closely with Shell Development engineers in the development of materials that could be used in the high-pressure (15,000 psi SITP), sour gas (35% H 2 S) wells September 1968 June SHELL OIL COMPANY Staff Drilling Engineer Southeast Region New Orleans, Louisiana Acted as advisor to the regional chief engineer and the regional chief of drilling operations on matters relating to drilling engineering and operations Responsible for all of the Gulf of Mexico, state waters for Louisiana and Texas, onshore Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and South Texas Provided engineering and operational assistance to both the offshore and onshore divisions on difficult and unusual drilling and completion problems Identified areas for drilling research within the region and coordinated these efforts with Shell Development Company Established annual drilling goals and targets for the region Coordinated personnel administration for the thirty-five drilling engineers in the five divisions within the region. (Items included in this administration were forecasting manpower requirements, promotions, salaries, transfers, training and overall career planning for each engineer.) Significant Project: Prepared a conceptual plan for placing a drilling rig in the Florida Everglades without disturbing the natural environment of the swamp January 1967 September SHELL OIL COMPANY Senior Drilling Engineer Offshore East Division New Orleans, Louisiana Provided technical support for Shell's offshore drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico (These operations were conducted using fixed platform, semi-submersible and jack-up rigs.) Prepared drilling plans for up to seven rigs operating in the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Louisiana 8
Prepared operational plans and provided onsite technical support for the installation and operation of sub-sea drilling and completion equipment used on the semi-submersible rigs Prepared operational plans and provided onsite technical support for the installation and operation of mud-line suspension drilling and completion equipment used on the jack-up rigs Prepared equipment specifications and maintenance programs for two, Shell owned platform rigs (Shell Rigs No.12 and No.11) Supervised the work activities of the five drilling engineers on my staff Reduced the amount of surface casing being set on wells drilled from a number of fixed platforms through a comprehensive study of shallow formation fracture pressure gradients (This reduction in casing lengths resulted in annual savings of over $350,000.) Developed a concept which reduced exploratory well costs by approximately $500,000 on nine wells by directionally drilling several delineation wells from a single semisubmersible rig surface location, rather than by moving the rig to each individual well location Together with several major mud companies, developed a drilling mud for use in drilling "Gumbo" shale formations in the West Delta area of the Gulf Conducted a study of sealed bearing bit performance in Shell's offshore drilling operations (The purpose of the study was to determine the conditions where sealed bearing bits might be more economical than the less expensive conventional bearing bits.) Conducted a "predevelopment" study of a newly discovered offshore field, which determined the most probable economics of developing this field prior to commitment of funds for platforms, production equipment, development wells and pipelines August 1965 January SHELL OIL COMPANY Drilling Engineer Midland Division Midland, Texas Provided technical support for Shell's drilling and completion operations in the Delaware and Val Verde Basins in West Texas Prepared drilling plans for Shell operated rigs drilling in the deep Delaware and Val Verde Basins Prepared operational plans and provided onsite technical support for air drilling operations Supervised the work activities of the drilling engineering staff 9
Designed the completion of a 22,000 ft. well in the Gomez (Ellenberger) Field (At the time this well was completed, deep well completion technology was still in the primitive stages of development. Therefore, most of the equipment and materials used in this completion had to be designed specifically for this well.) Developed advanced "packed-hole" bottom-hole assemblies for use in deep air and gas drilling operations Developed "clear brine" kill fluids for controlling high gas flow rates after penetrating the gas reservoir, while drilling with air or gas December 1963 July SHELL OIL COMPANY Drilling Foreman Midland and Roswell Divisions Midland, Texas and Artesia, New Mexico Supervised drilling operations on Shell-operated rigs in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico Provided field supervision of surveying and staking of well locations, construction of roads and drilling pads, installation and removal of drilling rigs and entire drilling operations from spud to rig release and clean up and restoration of road and location Coordinated the work of all service companies used in the drilling operation Contacted landowners and negotiated surface damage payments Supervised the drilling operations on a 22,000 ft. Gomez Field well Supervised the drilling operations on several 15,000 ft., Ellenberger wells in the Val Verde Basin (These wells were drilled using air or gas as the drilling fluid from spud to total depth. Gas flows of over 100 MMCFPD were regularly encountered.) Supervised drilling operations on several deep, high-pressured wells in the Delaware Basin in Southeastern New Mexico (As most of these wells were exploratory wells, penetration of unexpected high-pressure reservoirs required the frequent use of well control procedures.) Supervised field tests of several Shell research laboratories projects: Extended nozzle bits were developed by Royal Dutch Shell's Rijswijk Laboratory in Holland to improve penetration rates. The tests were conducted to determine under what conditions these bits would be profitable. Shell Development's "Linear Approximation Method" of determining optimum drilling techniques was tested to determine the most effective weight on bit, rotary speed and bit type. An asphalt emulsion mud was developed by engineers at Shell Development Laboratories in Houston to provide a fast drilling fluid with fluid loss control. 10
Water influx during air drilling operations is a significant problem. Shell Development Company developed several different formulations of "water shut-off fluids" that were designed to be squeezed into the water zones. Field tests were conducted on a number of air-drilled holes after encountering water flows. Supervised underbalanced drilling operations on several deep wells in the Delaware Basin (In certain parts of the basin, it is necessary to drill through high-pressure gas reservoirs with zones, having low fracture pressures, exposed. Underbalanced drilling was a new technique, and the necessary equipment and techniques were just being developed.) June 1962 December SHELL OIL COMPANY Drilling Engineer Abilene Division Abilene, Texas Provided technical support for Shell's exploratory and development drilling operations in North and West-Central Texas Prepared drilling plans for all of Shell's drilling operations in the division Ran and cemented virtually all of the casing strings used in the division's drilling programs Provided onsite engineering on two deep (17,000 and 18,000 ft.), North Texas exploratory wells Prepared operational plans and provided onsite technical support for several air drilling operations Acted as onsite engineer during field tests of several Shell research laboratories projects: A Shell Development procedure of injecting slugs of sodium silicate solution to stabilize sloughing shales during mist drilling operations was used on several wells. Tests of a "Water Content Monitor" were conducted on an air-drilled hole in central Texas. This device detected minute traces of water in the return air stream and allowed mist drilling to commence before serious hole stability problems occurred. "Ultra-Clear-Water" drilling fluids were tested on a number of wells in the division. A $100,000 reduction in drilling costs was achieved on one test. November 1960 May SHELL OIL COMPANY Mechanical Engineer Midland Division Midland, Texas 11
Provided production and drilling engineering support for Shell's operations in the Midland division Prepared drilling plans for development wells in Shell's Foster and Goldsmith Production Units Monitored production on the wells in the above production units and recommended remedial work to improve producing rates Along with two other engineers, ran and cemented all of the casing strings used in the division's drilling programs Attended Shell training school at Shell Development Laboratories Significant Project: Studied cement materials and techniques used in cementing surface casing strings in the Wasson Field (The purpose of the study was to minimize WOC times.) February 1960 April PLYMOUTH OIL COMPANY Roustabout Sinton, Texas June 1959 September MAGNOLIA PETROLEUM COMPANY Roustabout Alice, Texas 12
