3 foreword ai conference Richard Raši Deputy PM for Investments and Informatization TODD BRADSHAW President, AmCham Slovakia I would like to thank the organizers of this conference on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and express my gratitude to AmCham for helping to strengthen cooperation in the artificial intelligence sector in Slovakia. The development of artificial intelligence has been part of the Digital Single Market Strategy for many years in Europe. My office is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Digital Single Market in Slovakia, and making sure that policies are consistent with helping the development of artificial intelligence. We have been eagerly awaiting the European Commission s publication of its Communication on the European Artificial Intelligence Initiative on April 25. This will be the European approach to artificial intelligence and robotics. My office analyses the possibilities of deploying artificial intelligence in public administration and seeks expert opinions on potential impacts on society, businesses and the general public. We have summarized the main objectives of Slovakia in artificial intelligence regulations in a paper we issued last month together with other V4 countries. A study of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission found that Slovakia has a developed digital market given its size. Slovak companies, such as CaseCrunch, Sygic, Pixel Federation, Eset are international market players. The Slovak government will continue to support start-ups, as we are aware of their great potential benefit to the Slovak economy. Creating an attractive business environment for companies focused on artificial intelligence in Slovakia is our key role. In the longer term, we want to direct the economy towards higher added value enterprises. We all realize that Slovakia, like many other countries, has limited resources. In order to unlock its full potential, we need to do three things: our universities must form international research partnerships, our businesses need to transfer expertise from labs to the market, and our public administration must follow current best practices in decision-making. Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe that this conference will be an excellent platform to support the development of artificial intelligence in Slovakia. It will bring new opportunities for the business and academic sectors, so that Slovak citizens will benefit and I am certain we will soon see the benefits of this cooperation. On behalf of AmCham Slovakia I would like to welcome you to the AmCham Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. The conference will feature international and local AI experts, who will highlight the untapped opportunities of applied AI while sharing emerging best practices and future AI trends. The Conference will also seek on the key challenges we face in order to fully exploit the potential of Artificial intelligence for Slovak economy and society. AI is rapidly moving from the laboratory into business and consumer applications. Some of our members are at the forefront of AI research and are investing in technologies that will transform people s lives. AI is forecast to contribute 16 Trillion USD to the global economy and boost global GDP by 26% by 2030, and is poised to have a transformative effect on consumers, enterprise, and governments around the world (PwC, 2018). We re all familiar with the term Artificial Intelligence. But what does this term really mean? First coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, AI involves machines that can perform tasks that are characteristic of human intelligence. These includes planning, understanding language, recognizing objects and sounds, learning, and problem solving. AI means, that a machine has the ability to learn without being explicitly reprogrammed. As society debates the implications of AI systems, a conversation is taking place about the future of Artificial Intelligence and what it will or should mean for humanity. There are many controversies on which, the world s leading experts disagree. This includes AI s future impact on the job market, if and when human-level AI will be developed, whether this will lead to an intelligence explosion, and whether this is something we should welcome or fear. We believe, that industry should help build trust in AI systems by adopting a responsible approach towards development and deployment. We will look at AI from three perspectives: the first panel will consider how artificial intelligence is empowering some of the most successful technology today. The second panel will discuss how the government can capitalize on AI opportunities and seek to identify Slovakia s current ecosystem and the opportunities that this will create for AI development. The third panel will outline a vision for Slovak academia for the future of AI and how Slovakia s researchers can help turn that vision into reality. We will also discuss how to foster business/academic collaboration to foster cutting-edge research and how to create a vibrant research ecosystem. An creative open mind will prove to be a big asset in the near future, as technology advances and we continue to experiment with using AI to solve the problems we face today. AmCham Slovakia aims to serve as a platform for the AI multistakeholder dialogue, so that the full potential of AI can be achieved for the Slovak economy and society.

8 academia Q&A Ing. Ivana Budinská, PhD. Institute of Informatics, Slovak Academy of Sciences How do you use AI in your daily work? We use AI to solve various optimization problems, in Natural Language Processing (spoken and written), for semantic analysis and for knowledge management. Other areas in which we use AI methods are data analysis and other fields where traditional computational methods What do you think is the biggest challenge to using the potential of AI in Slovakia? The biggest challenge is to draft legislation for intelligent systems in Slovakia. Artificial intelligence and its application will not exist unless there is systemic support for technical education (math, physics, etc.). It is necessary for the best professionals to stay in, or return to, academia to teach stuwould fail, or would not be able to achieve results in a reasonable time. Which areas in AI have the most potential in your opinion? Computer vision, image recognition and speech recognition. In particular, deep neural networks and deep learning achieve surprisingly good results in these areas - more accurate and faster than other methods used so far. doc. Ing. František Duchoň, PhD. President, National Centre of Robotics What is the biggest challenge to using the potential of AI in Slovakia? Generally speaking, I think people are currently an obstacle, especially people who are well paid. We are constantly investing in infrastructure, but no-one invests in people. What is our infrastructure for, when there is no-one to work with it? In a few years time, there will not be anyone to teach informatics at elementary and secondary schools. Why? Because skilled computer scientists and teachers earn more at private companies, and so there is a risk that future generations will be taught at a very low level. Only the best of the best should be in education. And good teachers should be well paid. This is not just about AI, but generally, it is about education in Slovakia. prof. Ing. Igor Farkaš, Dr. Centre for Cognitive Science Department of Applied Informatics, FMFI UK How do you use AI in your daily work? At the Department of Applied Informatics, we focus mainly on artificial neural networks (including deep learning) and their use in various tasks (image, language, etc.), human machine interaction in cognitive robotics, knowledge representation and reasoning, and machine learning in bioinformatics. What is the biggest challenge to using the potential of AI in Slovakia? The biggest challenge is to connect the academic sector more closely with the private sector and convince companies that it is a good investment to provide longerterm systematic financial support to academic institutions active in AI, which will lead to better use of the research potential of employees and students. This implies more intensive communication and agreement on cooperation. prof. Ing. Peter Sinčák, CSc. Head of the Department of Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence, TU KE dents. Human potential is very important for AI and without young talented people in Slovakia, we will not have any AI. Good integration of universities and the Slovak Academy of Science would make a significant contribution to improving the quality of the academic environment in Slovakia. Which areas in AI have the most potential in your opinion? I see the great potential of artificial intelligence in its integration with cloud computing and virtual reality, especially for the needs of Industry 4.0 and HEALTH 4.0. In general, I see potential in integrating and hybridizing different approaches implemented in cloud environments.
