K* improves the ways in which knowledge is shared and applied: improving processes already in place to bring about more effective and sustainable change. Shaxson, Louise with Alex T. 17 Four Key factors for SPI success 1. Stop re-inventing the wheel Know what the barriers are Know skills required for Knowledge brokering Tool kits abound 2. Think about and Invest in Kstar functions upfront Understand which are needed and in what contexts Consider investing in in-house intermediaries (not just steering cttees.) Brainstorm audiences/dissemination strategies Consider how to assess success (not necessarily measure) 3. Involve all players from the outset and sustain communications and interactions 4. Stop spinning our wheels - Just do it! No restrictions on who can do K*, or what they call what they are doing Need not be very costly alex.bielak@ec.gc.ca CIS-SPI 14/11/2012 Brussels 33 Thankyou/Merci Questions? alex.bielak@ec.gc.ca CIS-SPI 14/11/2012 Brussels 34 17
18 How does the context for K* help shape the approach? CIS-SPI 14/11/2012 Brussels 35 K* Conference Case Study Founded in 2000: 18 founding members, now 70 Individual institutions involved in training and research on WRM in SADC region lacked capacity to provide training/do research on regional water issues. Large (~300 participants) annual symposium Alliance with GWP SA, which works with stakeholder groups including government agency reps dealing with water in SADC countries provided platform for researchers to communicate with policy makers and water managers CIS-SPI 14/11/2012 Brussels 36 18
