Students MTech Degree from TUT or CPUT and MSc degree from the ESIEE DTech or PhD with opportunities of co-tutelle and bursaries offers Involvement in international exchange programmes The French South African Institute of Technology is the result of a partnership between the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry, its Engineering School (ESIEE Paris), the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the Université de Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC). Courses and research projects take place in the two F SATI nodes: TUT which focuses on the Enabled Environment and Assistance to the Handicapped, Telecommunications, Energy and Industrial Power Systems; CPUT which specializes in Space Technologies, Satellite Engineering and Embedded Electronics. Strongly supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), the institute has become a leading center in human capacity development and scientific innovation. 3 CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Satellite Engineering This programme covers the broad fields of embedded electronics, power systems and satellite communications. The CPUT node resides within the Department Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, and hosts the Research Chair Innovative Small Satellite Technology and Applications for Africa. Major achievements ZACUBE-1, Africa s first nano-satellite, was developed by F SATI students and staff and launched from Russia in November The event was largely covered by the media. F SATI is also commercializing satellite communication subsystems, distributed by the Clyde Space scottish company on the international market. ZACUBE-1 Satellite TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Enabled environment & Assistance to Handicap This area covers the control and enabling technologies needed to assist persons in handicap situations, such as a wheelchair virtual reality platform or assistive devices. In order to run these projects, TUT is working closely with the UPEC and the Université de Versailles-Saint-Quentinen-Yvelines (UVSQ). Telecommunications The focus of the research niche is the design and control of wireless ad hoc networks, and the optimisation of the power consumption in wireless sensor networks. Strong partnerships have been established with the UVSQ, the UPEC, CNAM- Paris, Wits University and the University of Johannesburg. Energy & power systems The ambition of this programme is to generate new ideas and technological innovations in Power Engineering, Energy and Industrial Systems. The niche area is geared towards issues such as Power Electronics and Distribution Systems, Electric Motors and Drives, Renewable Energies or Coal technology. 4 ICEMASA I n t e r n a t i o n a l Centre for Education, Marine a n d Atmospheric Sciences over Africa ICEMASA is a joint venture between several South African and French laboratories, focusing on Marine Sciences over the southern Africa coasts through a multidisciplinary approach. Based at the University of Cape Town, this International Joint Laboratory launched in 2009 is the flagship project of the IRD in South Africa. ICEMASA is devoted to... Research Ocean circulation, biogeochemistry and climate interactions Effects of global changes on marine ecosystems and fisheries Observational and modeling strategy ICEMASA is a joint laboratory which was initiated by the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Marine and Coastal Management (MCM). In 2012, the Institut National des Sciences de l Univers du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS-INSU) became the third French affiliated member to ICEMASA. Over the years, the successive projects have gathered scientists, lecturers, professors, engineers and technicians from: South Africa: UCT MArine REsearch institute (MA-RE), the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DEA/DAFF, ex MCM) France: Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), Université Aix- Marseille (AMU), Université Montpellier 2 (UM2), IRD (Sète and Brest) and CNRS-INSU Education Co-supervize MSc and PhD students Co-badge degrees between UBO/UCT and UM2/UCT Organize Winter Schools, conferences and workshops End-user tasks Team-up with ACCESS/MA-RE and associated projects Develop a common State of the environment system Research partnerships with private companies Strongly supported by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), ICEMASA has also been working in close collaboration with the Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Science (ACCESS). 5 OCEAN CIRCULATION, BIOGEOCHEMISTRY AND CLIMATE The main objective of coastal and large-scale oceanography over southern Africa is to understand the processes that drive ocean and atmospheric circulation and the subsequent impact on the climate. The complementary approach involves observations and numerical simulations that will further the regional monitoring of water masses and heat or biogeochemical fluxes. ECOSYSTEMS AND FISHERIES The purpose of this research area is to understand the effects of global change on marine ecosystems and fisheries. Scientists focus on describing the properties of ocean habitats affected by fishing, shedding light on the movements of pelagic fish and depicting a clear image of the marine food web in relation to its environment. Several researchers in various fields such as ecology, economy or law, are working together to achieve the ultimate goal: the creation of a reliable representation of the evolution of our ecosystem in the context of a changing environment. OBSERVATIONAL & MODELLING STRATEGY Many scientific questions adressed by the ICEMASA require in situ data collection that can be complemented by pooling technical resources as well as instruments with partners. High priority is given to this data sharing which will enable the regional monitoring of marine ecosystems. For instance, a partnership with TOTAL was created to collect real time data from the oil platforms. Combining simulation tools and converging towards a limited set of models is also necessary to achieve the creation of a common high resolution ocean-atmosphere description system. STAKEHOLDERS

6 F SASEC F r e n c h South African S c h n e i d e r Electric Centre F SASEC is a French-South African training centre which was opened in March 2012 at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), in the Gauteng province. The centre aims at training junior and senior technicians in the field of electricity, renewable energy and automated systems control. F SASEC is one of eight centres of this type to be established abroad by the French company Schneider Electric and the French Ministry of National Education - the others being located in South America and Asia. The Schneider Electric Foundation, an organisation under the aegis of the Fondation of France has also provided additional funding for the project. The purpose of F SASEC is to contribute to vocational training in South Africa. The unit is located at VUT and directed by a French Professor of Electrical Engineering, Alexandre Sebastiani, who is also the President of the Alliance Française of Vandebiljpark. AIMS Train up skilled manpower in the field of energy, electricity and automation Provide high-level training and scolarships to students from disadvantaged background Allow professionals already in the market to further develop their skills Build an effective partnership between VUT, Schneider Electric and the French education system DEGREES F SASEC offers the following basic and advanced qualifications: - The foundation of knowledge is a one-year cycle, specializing in wiring systems in residential and commercial environments. This training gives students the opportunity to acquire a level equivalent to the French vocational baccalaureate. - Professional degree is a three-year programme which offers students a specialization in systems automation and industrial and high-powered facilities. Upon completion, they obtain a professional certificate as senior technicians. STAKEHOLDERS

7 PLMCC P r o d u c t Lifecycle Management C o m p e t e n c y Centre The PLMCC is a Franco-South African engineering school which was opened in 2012 at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Based on the modelling software suite developed by Dassault Systèmes, the training offers students in-depth knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management in many engineering fields. The Product Lifecycle Management Competency Centre is the fifth of this type to be created by the French company Dassault Systèmes and the French Ministry of National Education - the others being located in France, India, Brazil and Mexico. Its purpose is to train engineers to be immediately operational upon entry into industries and laboratories after graduation. The unit is located in the same building as the fully functional French South African Institute of Technology (F SATI) at the CPUT, supported by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and directed by a French Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Stéphane Bouyé. AIMS Build competencies in the understanding and use of Product Lifecycle Management tools Equip historically disavantaged students with practical and sound theoretical knowledge Strengthen the Industry-Institute partnership by way of joint product and process development Facilitate the implementation of new Franco-South African research collaborations PRODUCT LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT In the manufacturing industry, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from conception to production through engineering design. Dassault Systèmes, a subsidiary of the Dassault Groups, is specialized in PLM solutions and the production of three-dimensional modelling softwares. The company has developed a new generation of softwares enabling 3D Design, Engineering, Modeling and Simulation. The training at the PLMCC is focused on the implementation of projects using these Dassault Systèmes products, especially the 3D CAD leading software CATIA. The laboratory also provides cutting-edge production tools to allow students to validate their theoretical results. STAKEHOLDERS

8 F SAGRI F r e n c h South African a g r i c u l t u r a l institute F SAGRI is a training and research programme in agriculture, initiated by the South African and French governments. It aims at contributing to address the food security and rural development issues in South Africa, by offering high level degrees in food science and processing, as well as in agribusiness. Strong linkages between universities, research institutes and agribusiness companies from both countries will be provided to fulfill the needs of the sector. Capacity building, research innovation and industrial outcomes are key objectives of the F SAGRI. The South African agricultural priority is the creation of competitive and sustainable rural enterprises with food security for all, along with the training of highly skilled workforce to drive the development of these enterprises. Within this framework, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) decided to create F SAGRI, in partnership with the French Ministry of Agriculture, Agrifood and Forestry and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The implementation of the graduate school includes student training, staff and curriculum development, research, exchange of students, professors and researchers between South Africa and France universities and research institutions, as well as community development. HIGHER EDUCATION Three rural-based universities will host the institute, namely the Universities of Fort Hare, Venda and Limpopo. The French stakeholders will be renowned higher education agricultural schools and research institutions such as Montpellier SupAgro, the Cirad or the INRA. A French expert will be placed in one of the rural universities from September 2014 to establish and manage the institute jointly with the concerned universities and in close collaboration with the ARC and interested agro-business partners. Master and PhD courses are scheduled to start in January Postgraduate students will be awarded by both a South African and French diploma. When fully operational, the institute will be extended to the other rural universities. RESEARCH Considering the industrial and institutional needs, the research programmes will be identified and initiated by the institute. The research areas could cover the following themes: Food processing, agro processing, food science and technology, biotechnology: dairy, vegetables, meat, indigenous vegetables and fruits, precision farming Agribusiness value chain development, communal farming system, cooperatives: agriculture economics, research chair on communal land, quality analysis Agro-forestry Research projects will be undertaken jointly with local South African and French industries, in view to foster innovation and technological developments in the agricultural sector.
