1 Reflections: Upper catchment CSO Indaba, C1 : 30 th March 2016 Below are reflections given by participants at the end of the CSO Indaba from to the questions asked below no. as Question A and Question B. 1. Unknown QA: Seven principles of resilience. QB: Litigation in the water sector. 2. Thabo Elton Ncube. thabomyacc@gmail.com QA: the one thing I learnt today that; I didn t know is that the actions or our actions generally as human beings are the main problems that cause our globe to warm and also to add about shocking video that shows that really the temperature of our world is increasing and by 2050 there will be no life in our planet because of our actions of over exploitation of the earth resources. QB: what I would like to know more is that what are you doing to help small organisation like our organisation I HAWU-LEMVELO who is committed to bring about change in our communities more especially in the Olifant tributary catchment that passes by our community of which is highly contaminated by our on municipality with sewerage and high volume of acids from different industries people use to have access to clean water of the stream but that have been taken by the municipality. 3. Unknown QA: The one thing that I learnt today that I didn t know is that; motivating people to support them to the Olifants. We must look our environment clean. QB: to share our views, to development to the community and development the environment and the campaigns. 4. Unknown QA: The one that I learnt today that I didn t know is that.. Our environment is dying and a crossing down by water and electricity. It is the mining that kills our environment and destroy our land. Is, what is development? How our river is going and our environment goes on even our land, shelter, food even our across boundaries. QA: The one thing I learnt today that I didn t know is that how can we are going to survive in our next coming years about our food water and our shelter s. QB: what I would like to know more about. QB: I would like to know more about environment. 7. QB: what in would like to know waste energy agriculture funding for community based intervention projects technical partners capacity building programs Availability exchange programs (Locally, National, International). 8. Rudolph Sambo QA: Is the issue surrounding us in Witbank are the same in Middleburg and not Middleburg alone but this issues affects even the neighbouring countries with pollution from down South to affect countries like Mozambique. QB: How to get my organisation registered and how to get my organisation a funder or sponsor. 9. Unknown QA: is the importance of the catchment and how much it is affected and how much is the ecosystem affected. QB: how can we run effective campaigns? 10. Unknown QA: The one thing I learnt today is that I didn t know is that as NPO s we need to be compliant to the DSD to make our work easier and I learn about team building. QB: What I would like to know more about is Social Audit. 11. Unknown QA: The one thing I learned today that I didn t know is that.the information on about the Olifants Catchment as to up to which country and provinces it runs to.the principles of resilience and the use of them as well at the important information about the issues or problems that causes the pollution of the catchment. QB: what I would like to learn more is coming up with a strategy and more information on the catchment. 13. Unknown QA: the thing I learnt today that I didn t know is that the climate change could be taken very seriously and I learnt about the challenges that the CSO sector are facing i.e. funding, skills shortage etc. I also learnt about the 7 principles of resilience. QB: I want to know how to contribute to awareness of the Olifants to open a service of cleaning and taking care of the river. 14. Unknown QA: how polluted that Olifants is and the far reaching consequences to the communities. How mining is destroying the natural habitat and health consequence to mine working. QB: what platforms does AWARD have in terms of engagement with policy makers to effect necessary changes? And what support is available to sustain the various projects. 15. Unknown. QA: The one thing I learnt today is that I didn t know is that the impact or diverse is the issue of our Olifants is real. There are many organisations who would and /or are involved with solving the problem from their own. More education or capacity building is need as is networking. QB: what I would like to know more is how to become more of an upfront activists more out of my organisation. 16. Unknown QA: one thing I learned today that I didn t know before was how much will society engagement there is across the catchment area of the Olifants and how much awareness there is about the importance of river health and river protection from the pollution generated by mining in Mpumalanga and how powerful the advocate for water are in Mpumalanga. QB: what I would like to know more about is the litigation work that is being carried out and what impacts it is having possibilities for more respectful collaborative relationship with local government and where challenges are being reported for organising a stronger collective voice on water resources; and the shifts happening due to climate change; and possibilities for community skills development for climate jobs. 17. Unknown QA: Organisation can register as section 21 organisation for them to easily access funds. And water catchment. QB: How to access as an organisation that is not registered. 4 QA: we as CSO need to work together in order to better Olifants catchment, and we should learn not to depend on mining activity. QB: How can I better my skills in CSO? 19. Unknown QA: The one thing I learnt today that I didn t know is that, is how Olifant river and how Climate change. QB: what I would like to know about is how watch dog can know their right and which door to knock on. 20. Unknown QA: There are so many NPO s involving in the discussed topic. QB: Ideas of how to build or implement an effective and sustainable resilient system (practical ideas). And brief description of what each organisation does (next indaba). 21. Unknown QA: Common struggles facing community organisation. QB: How possibility we create a living Network to respond to the struggles and form resilience. 22. Unknown QA: Climate change is very impactful to the economy with gradual effect to the ecosystem. QB: Involvement of the Local Authority and section 21 in our organisation (Our Olifants) and resilience in the catchment. 23. Unknown QA: The one thing I learnt today that I didn t know is that the global warming is changing so fast. QB: what I would like to know more is the resilience concept /specific activities. 24. Unknown QA: Is that Olifants River goes all the way to Mozambique and it has many livestock depending on it climate change and its future after a century from now. QB: How much is the capacity of its pollution as it flows. Which area is most polluted or less polluted can it be use to supply as drinking water. 25. Unknown QA: is that CSO s in the upper Olifants are so well organised in their anti-mining efforts. QB: Is go have a skills/capacity that with linkages between organisations where they can complement each other s work. 26. Unknown QA: Learned today and I did not know. Priority issues in the catchment Olifants education and awareness need of the public especially in terms of climate change. Other existing organisations in the Olifants river basin A network. QB: what I will like to know more about is? The implementation /strategies to mitigate issues raised during the indaba. That is what are the specific ideas that each organisation is planning to address What will the type of support from AWARD to the organisation especially with relevant strategies?

QB: Conservation, Direct Impacts in more details and biodiversity. 29. Unknown QA: I didn t know that there are so many CSO s dealing with issues of the Olifants river catchment. QB: I would want to know more of what each of the CSO s focus and how I can involve them in my workplace. 30. Unknown QA: the one thing I learnt today I didn t know is that,we the people of South Africa we must take thing serious like mining.mining is the serious issues that we are facing mining is destroying our land in the serious note. I was not having a clue that in the 2050 we will experience ozone layer. QB: I suggest that we the people of South Africa. We to be responsible we note to stop cutting down trees stop using CFS stop burning fossil fuel. 31. Unknown QA: The one thing I learnt today was how may organisations there are that are concerned with the effects of mines on communities also I liked the way the group was critical about dependencies. Mining. Local government. QB: I would like to know more about what people organisations present and involved in. what affiliations they belong to, what their visions are and also skills. 32. Unknown QA: the one thing I learnt today that I didn t know is that: Networking with other organisation to push the community struggle is vital. Working with Lawyers is important. QB: I suggest that we must not compromise to push the interest of the community. 33. Unknown QA: The one thing I learn today is that Climate change is about water, about culture and trees. 31QB: More about environment, more about indigenous knowledge and way of doing thing.
