1 Bios and abstracts Day 1-27 th of September: Annika Steiber, CEO Innoway; Adjunct professor, Santa Clara University; Managing Director; Berkeley Research Group (BRG) Management in the digital age Abstract: This talk is about the recent evolution or even re-invention of management, including management of R&D. Many researchers studying the field of management or work in it are convinced that the need of change is great. The problem is that most companies today are still managed on the basis of models developed for the Industrial Age, while the world has moved to a much faster-changing Digital Era an era so different, that operating in the old way is like trying to apply Newtonian physics in a quantum-physics world. Certainly managers everywhere try to keep up with changing times. New management methods and programs are always being tried, and some may be helpful. The trouble is that most firms are using these efforts to tweak an underlying management system that isn t right. As the cliché says, they are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Fundamentally new ways of navigating are required. Companies that keep steaming along, ignoring the need, may be staying afloat by luck to a greater degree than they realize. In this talk I will present the basic foundational pillars of the new management model for the times, drawn from my own research on what is actually working at a number of leading companies. Biography: Dr. Steiber has a PhD from Chalmers University of Technology. She has since 1993 focused on Management innovations and is currently conducting research, together with Chalmers University and single professors at Stanford and Berkeley University, on new management concepts and models for the Digital Age, as well as advising both large and smaller organizations on this matter. She is further Assistant Professor focused on Management and Entrepreneurship at Menlo College in the heart of Silicon Valley as well as act as a lecturer at the Management department at Santa Clara University in California s Silicon Valley. She also provides leadership programs to executives in both the private and

2 public sector and she is a known international keynote speaker in the field of management for entrepreneurship and innovation management in a Digital Age. Dr. Steiber is the author of several award-winning research articles and three well- downloaded management books: "The Google Model-Management for Continuous Innovation" (Springer, 2014 and Vinnova 2014), The Silicon Valley Model- Management for Entrepreneurship (Springer, 2016 and Liber 2016), and Management for the Digital Age: Will China surpass Silicon Valley? (Springer, 2017). Magnus Melander, THINGS THINGS and the role of SME s Abstract: A natural result of the accelerating Digital Transformation is that value chains are replaced by eco-systems. Eco-system is very easy to say and one of the most difficult things to do since they are multilateral and build on mutual trust and collaboration Biography: Magnus Melander, is a Swedish entrepreneur and ICT professional with 30+ years of international experience. Magnus is Evangelist at the connected car company Springworks, the owner of the consulting and advisory firm Wbird, co-founder of Joman Robotics, he is co-founder and evangelist at the hardware hub THINGS and serves at the boards of THINGS, April Systems, Gemit and Mobile Institute Stockholm. His focus is on IoT and he founded the Swedish M2M Service Enablers (SMSE) alliance 2012, today having 70 members and 24 partners. Magnus was Partner at BrainHeart Capital, a VC devoted to wireless technologies, which he co-founded 2000 and he is currently advisor to Talkpool and WSI. Magnus ICT industry experience includes senior international positions with IBM, Apple and 3Com. At 3Com, Magnus held several senior executive positions, including Marketing Director Europe, Network Service Provider Director EMEA and New Business Development Director EMEA. During his years at Apple he held a number of executive positions including Country Manager Finland, Channel Marketing Director Europe and Channel Strategy Director Europe. Magnus is a frequent speaker at international industry events and writes his IoT blog connectcompute.com and the Internet of Everything Chronicle. Prof. W. Damm, OFFIS - Self-Explaining Autonomous Systems - the SEE Initiative Abstract: Autonomous Systems, especially the Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems (ACPS) addressed in this talk, are at the core of smart solutions from health to energy to mobility. They come with the promise to provide sustainable solutions for assuring health care everywhere (such as through embedding IBM-Watson-like clinical decision support systems), green energy (such as through smart grids), and zero accident green mobility (such as through autonomous vehicles). Their market potential is tremendous - McKinsey estimates that the on-going digitalization will add an additional 1.5 Trillion US $ to the US GDP by 2025, and 1 Trillion EUR to the GDP in Europe - and so is the roll out of such products by global companies.

3 We address a growing societal concern about the policies underlying these systems: given that the very enabler for this boost is their increasing "smartness", do we know what decisions are taken when for what reasons? Can we assess at all, whether the rationale underlying such decision-making is compliant with our societal values and consistent with my own value system? Will, ultimately, global system companies determine value systems globally by tightly integrating the company s proprietary ethical code into their products? As the level of smartness is pushed by integrating self-learning systems, enabling them to carry out tasks never programmed explicitly by humans, how can we at all ensure that their emergent behavior is compatible with the norms and principles of our society? We address this challenge for critical application domains, where failures of systems can cause drastic economic damage or endanger human life, and underlying policies for decision-making are potentially deciding over life or death, or shut down critical infrastructures with resulting impacts on production and living situation. Significant improvements in overall system safety are expected by increasing the level of automation, yet human interaction will remain key, though now on a level of integrating strategic competences of humans and ACPS for conflict resolution under real-time constraints, calling for multimodal metaphors drastically raising the level of abstraction for human-acps interaction. The University of Oldenburg has created a cross faculty cross organisation initiative to adress these challenges - the SEE Initiative. The talk presents key ingredients of the scientific approach taken by SEE, and instantiates this approach for the domain of autonomous driving. Biography: Prof. Werner Damm holds the Chair for Safety Critical Embedded Systems at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. He is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Critical Systems Engineering for Socio-Technical Systems. He is a member of acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering. Currently he is engaged as a director in the working group highly automated systems and, in the framework of acatech pushing on autonomous driving. As a member of the steering board he contributed similarly to the acatech survey New automobility the future World of Automated Road Traffic, and to the Roadmap Highly Automated Systems: Test, Safety, and Development Processes. On a national level he is furthermore acknowledged in the field of strategical development by his membership in the working group of the ethics commission for Autonomous Driving of the Federal Ministry of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Applied Research Institute OFFIS, and the Chairman of the German competence cluster SafeTRANS, integrating leading companies and research institutes in the transportation domain, the co-founder and member of the steering board of the European Institute for Complex Safety Critical Engineering EICOSE, the Chairman of the Artemis Working Group Tool Platforms. Werner Damm has been a member of various expert groups of the European Commission and the US National Science Foundation, notably on the topics of future strategies for Systems-of Systems in Europe, and on Cyber-Physical Systems in the Transportation domain in the US. His recent foundational research addresses mathematical models of embedded systems, systems-ofsystems, and cyber physical systems, specification languages, hybrid systems, formal verification methods, formal synthesis, and real-time and safety analysis. This is complemented by applied research with industrial partners in avionics, automotive, space, and medical systems on system-and-safety development processes for safety related systems, where he pioneered contract-based systems engineering for functional requirements, safety and timeliness requirements, and stability requirements, the use of patterns for capturing such contracts, and tools for automatic test generation, consistency checking, and virtual integration testing based on formalized contracts.

4 Martti Mäntylä, Aalto University Digital Disruption of Industry: The Finnish Perspective Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss the scope and content of digital transformation of industry primarily on the basis of my experience and observations during the last 4 years. Through a few case examples, I will discuss the variable responses of companies to the challenge, including its impacts to human work and business aspects. I will also touch upon a more general model of strategy implications to technology disruptions. Biography: My activities are focused on digitalization in industry and society in general, in particular socalled Industrial Internet. A key activity is to lead the Digital Disruption of Industry consortium funded by the Strategic Research Council of the Academy of Finland; see I am also actively engaged with the Aalto Industrial Internet Campus strategic initiative; see for more information. Torvald Mårtensson, SAAB - Development of systems for the Gripen fighter aircraft Abstract: Continuous integration and continuous delivery is not just about technical solutions, but also about onboarding the organization. Based on studies which include six different companies, this talk presents the factors that the developers see as the continuous integration impediments in large-scale industry projects. Furthermore, the talk provides three examples of practices implemented in the Gripen project to enable more frequent integration of software. Biography: Torvald Mårtensson is Distinguished Engineer in System Integration and Test at Saab AB. He has a background of thirteen years in the aeronautics industry and another eight years in the telecom industry. His work has primarily revolved around systems integration and system testing of large-scale software systems. He has published several research papers on the subject at conferences and in journals. Jonas Wigander, Ericsson - How we defined our own SW Development System Abstract: We would like to share our experiences from defining, develpoing and rolling our our SW Development System We will share The underlying driving forces behind the system, including why we choose to define our own development system Problems during the journey, and how we choose to handle them The management perspective on this, including decision making and how we ran the project The SW Development System is a system-oriented framework of processes, methods, and tools for developing large scale SW systems, all the way from customer need to working SW in operations The processes, methods and tools are the hard part of the system, but there is also a soft part: communities, principles, vision, and priorities

5 Biography: Jonas Wigander has worked at Ericsson since 1993, in many different product areas, e.g. GSM Radio Base stations and with the AXE Platform, as line and project manager. The last 10 years, Jonas has worked in Corporate Technology as head of R&D processes, and is currently Head of the SW Development System at Business Area Digital Services. He is also one of Ericsson s representatives in the SW Center academia-company research cooperation at Chalmers. Jonas has a educational background in Computer Science, at Stockholm University, and currently lives in Stockholm. Jan Gulliksen - Impact of societal digitalization What are the policy makers intending to do? Abstract: Digitalization including AI has an impact on anything from education to healthcare, markets, services and ways of living will change. This talk will treat cross-disciplinary aspects of digitalization, emphasizing the societal implications and impact, the needs for digital competence, required changes in the working life, and the role universities should play as part of this shift. The talk will also touch upon innovation opportunities and the role of policy development. Biography: Jan Gulliksen is vice rector of Digitalization at KTH, served 2012 and 2016 as chairman of the Swedish Committee for Digitalization belonging to the Ministry of the Enterprise, and is now a member of the Digitalization Council, and the Digital Champion of Sweden serving the European Commission.
