However, it will take commitment to obtain them. Anders Eldrup, chairman of Offshoreenergy.dk With the creation of around 7,000 jobs in the offshore sector towards 2020, there is no doubt that this sector will, indeed, go on being a significant part of Danish economy in the future. Growth in the sector will also ensure Denmark s position as the world s strongest offshore nation. CONTENT There is a great potential for growth in the Danish offshore sector. This is the reason for the establishment of the national innovation network and knowledge centre Offshoreenergy.dk: if Denmark is to gain the maximum advantage of the offshore sector s great potential, we must make sure collaboration and partnerships across the sector thrive even more than has hitherto been the case. It makes good sense to unite the fields of oil/gas and renewables in one centre in that the vast majority of the players in the sector are involved in both classic offshore activities (oil and gas) and green offshore (renewables). Offshoreenergy.dk contributes to ensuring Danish jobs and to preserving Denmark s strong, international position in both fields. This is why Offshoreenergy.dk unites knowledge in the one sector with knowledge in the other and focuses on both fields as equally important partners that can ensure Denmark s future in the field of offshore. Offshorenergy.dk has some clear objectives on which we base our navigation in order to support and develop the sector in the best possible way. In terms of offshore wind, this means it is very important for us to support our members for them to become more competitive. Denmark used to be the only country that took an interest in wind energy, but now Britain, France and Germany are making large investments in wind turbines, and this puts pressure on us if we want to preserve our leading position. It means, for instance, that costs must be reduced and that an even higher degree of internationalisation must be achieved as well. Great profits can be made if Danish companies are capable of winning their share of the rapid development in wind outside Denmark. There are, indeed, many potential great gains in the offshore sector. However, it will take commitment to obtain them. It will require a focus on training of staff for the sector to make sure a lack of, for instance, engineers does not inhibit growth. And it will require a focus on making sure more Danish companies become able to offer service and maintenance of platforms and installations. Not least will it require Denmark to be way ahead of our competitors all the time. However, this will definitely be possible if the players in the entire sector navigate towards the same goals: collaboration, exchange of knowledge and development of our know-how. Offshoreenergy.dk exists in order to contribute to achieving this goal. Offshoreenergy.dk is the result of a merger between the old Offshore Center Danmark, the Alliance for Green Off shore Energy, Green Offshore Center and Knowledge Center from Lindø Offshore Renewables Center. These organisations combined constitute Offshoreenergy.dk, the national innovation network and knowledge centre for the offshore sector. The EU has a declared goal that 20% of EU energy consumption in 2020 is to be covered by sustainable energy production. Offshore wind turbines have been estimated to be able to contribute with at least 40 GW by It is expected that 10,000 offshore wind turbines will be installed in the EU over the next 8 years offshore wind farms are to be installed if this aim is to be achieved, corresponding to around one new farm each month. Source: 2009 EU Renewable Energy Directive GEARED FOR GLOBAL COMPETITION New cluster collaboration launched to strengthen Danish sub-suppliers position in global market and create further growth The Danish offshore wind sector is in a strong position in the global market. However, if the sector is to maintain this position and be capable of matching the ambitious growth rates in foreign markets, then it must be developed. Most importantly, this is about reducing the cost of energy production the so-called cost of energy according to Offshoreenergy.dk and the Danish Wind Industry Association. This is the reason that these two organisations have established a joint cluster collaboration under the name Offshore Wind Denmark (OWD) with support from South-Danish Growth Forum. Morten Basse Jensen, director of Offshore energy.dk Renewables explains: The wind turbine manufacturers have been and will go on being capable of developing turbines in a way in which costs are reduced. The challenge is now to reduce costs in the rest of the offshore value chain, and this applies from planning and design through to installation, operation and maintenance. Offshore Wind Denmark centralises its efforts and aims to unify the small and medium-size companies in the offshore sector for them to be in a strong competitive position, says Morten Basse Jensen, Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables Jan Hylleberg, CEO of the Danish Wind Industry Association, adds: The offshore wind value chain faces some very special challenges in terms of developing itself in the increasing global competition. This is why we ve launched a range of activities targeted at this group of companies. Unifying organisation One of the greatest challenges is that, in future, growth in offshore wind will primary happen outside Denmark, which is currently the market that has the second-largest number of MW at sea. The most important future markets will be Britain, Germany and France, where Danes can play a major role; however, it is critical for them to find local partners in the markets they want to enter. Companies need help to do this, which is one of the reasons that OWD has been launched. constellations in Denmark and abroad. This will ensure that Danish sub-suppliers can match the requirements relating to capital and size that are expected to emerge in future, says Jan Hylleberg. The project embraces all companies that wish to become part of the value chain in offshore wind energy, and ambitions are high. Morten Basse Jensen says: We re centralising our efforts, and we re attempting to be a unifying factor for all the small and medium-size companies in the sector for them to be in the strongest possible competitive position. Our ambition is to be the unifying factor in Denmark in the offshore wind sector. OFFSHORE WIND DENMARK Offshore Wind Denmark is a four-year project that is supported by South Danish Growth Forum with 2.5 million. A secretariat has been set up that all companies in the sector are welcome to contact, no matter if they are members of Offshoreenergy.dk or the Danish Wind Industry Association or not. B2B EVENT Offshoreenergy.dk s most established event for the offshore industry, OWIB, is held on December in Esbjerg this year. It is a great opportunity to meet face to face with industry representatives from around the world. Thousands of contacts has been established over the last 7 years where the concept has developed. Another challenge is that requirements concerning the size of suppliers increase as projects grow. This applies to both Europe and in the long term also to the US and Asia, which are the largest growth markets outside Europe. This competitive situation is completely different from what Danish small and medium-size companies are used to. In order to win a share of the orders, companies must be very strong in terms of capital, which requires business development, new types of joint ventures and new The challenge is now to reduce costs in the rest of the offshore value chain, and this applies from planning and design through to installation, operation and maintenance Morten Basse Jensen, director of Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables

In the first half of 2013, 277 new offshore wind turbines were installed in Europe with a total capacity of 1,045 MW, which is around the double of total installation of wind turbines in Europe in Source: EWEA INTERNATIONAL OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS Offshoreenergy.dk is project manager of several projects that facilitate collaboration and innovation in the offshore wind sector Collaboration across borders is one of the objectives of Offshoreenergy.dk s international projects. ECOWINDS IN BRIEF ECOWinds is a project that aims to facilitate collaboration between the best research-driven clusters in Europe that are involved in service and maintenance of offshore wind farms. The project was developed by Offshoreenergy.dk in collaboration with partners from the Technical University of Denmark and Aalborg University plus the South Denmark European Office. The project also involves four partners from Germany, Britain and Norway, and Offshoreenergy.dk is the project manager. Collaboration across borders, development of existing networks and charting of new opportunities for business improvement initiatives. These are the aims of several of Ofshore energy.dk s projects run to the benefit of the offshore wind sector. We re creating some opportunities for companies that wouldn t otherwise materialise says Hans A. Pedersen, project manager with Offshore energy.dk, about the projects GADOW and ECOWinds. GADOW, German and Danish Offshore Wind, facilitates collaboration between companies and networks across the border with Germany and helps create an overview of the border region s many wind-related companies plus the region s logistics and training opportunities. Helps development along ECOWinds, European Cluster for Offshore Wind Servicing, is an EU-supported, cross-national project that includes Denmark, north-western Germany, eastern Britain and Norway. The project s objective is to generate business- improving initiatives for the entire region, for instance through greater collaboration between the wind sector, the research and development institutions and the various governments of the involved countries. Both projects create new opportunities, networks and collaboration. border region that hasn t existed before in the field of offshore wind but that builds on already established networks. Such collaboration doesn t emerge on its own and companies are busy doing business, so we ve decided to help it on the way. The two projects have websites, and GADOW s site contains valuable information on suppliers, sub-suppliers and partners. Furthermore, educational systems and overviews of harbours will soon be included. GADOW is organising a workshop on December 10, 2013, where all companies involved in offshore wind are welcome to turn up and be informed about the project and the opportunities it offers. Companies are also welcome to contribute with suggestions for the project. We re creating some opportunities for companies that wouldn t otherwise materialise Hans. A Pedersen, project manager with Offshoreenergy.dk GADOW IN BRIEF In the southern part of Denmark and in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein, offshore wind energy is the sector that is expected to have the greatest growth and job opportunities potential. GADOW, German and Danish Offshore Wind, was established to exploit this potential across the two regions in future. By registering with GADOW, companies can become visible to the sector, obtain access to information and know-how and exchange experiences. MORE INFO on ECOWindS and GADOW at and Hans A. 5 DENMARK S INNOVATION NETWORK & KNOWLEDGE CENTRE BOOSTED BY RESTRUCTURING AND A STRONGER BOARD 05 Denmark s national innovation network and knowledge centre for the offshore sector has undergone restructuring, and a strong, new board has been appointed. The aim is for the members interests to be better represented in the fields of oil and gas production and green energy at sea The offshore sector has grown explosively since the sector s national innovation network and knowledge centre, Offshore Center Danmark, was founded 10 years ago. This was the reason for the restructuring in the spring, when the organisation s board also expanded with two gentlemen who have made a big difference in the sector and the organisation changed its name to Offshoreenergy.dk. The centre wishes to keep up with developments and be in the best possible position to support and develop the sector nationally and internationally. The major change made to the centre is that it has been divided into two divisions, one of which represents the interests of oil and gas companies and one of which has been named Renewables and focuses on supporting companies involved in green energy at sea. Peter Blach, director of Offshoreenergy.dk s oil and gas division, explains: 10 years ago, there was a strong focus on oil and gas, and only a tenth of our members were involved in the offshore wind sector. Today we have almost as many members from the field of wind as from the field of oil and gas, and most of them are involved in both sectors. And there weren t that many companies that were involved in export either; currently, around 60% of our members are active in foreign markets. Strong, strategic board His partner in Offshoreenergy.dk is the director of Renewables, Morten Basse Jensen, and these two gentlemen are well known in the offshore sector. Peter Blach has been in the game from the beginning as the director of Offshore Center Danmark, and Morten Basse Jensen has for many years been one of Denmark s driving forces in the supply chain to international wind energy; for instance, he was the initiator of Djurs Wind Power. Morten Basse Jensen observes: We ve divided the centre into two divisions because we want to target our efforts better and to be closer to our members so we can collaborate better with them. We ve realised that the two effort areas are influenced by very different factors and conditions, but the two sectors complement each other as well, so there s a range of opportunities for achieving synergies and a practical operational advantage to be gained from collaboration. Morten Basse Jensen and Peter Blach enjoy support from the board, which has been expanded from five to 11 people and is headed by three visionary gentlemen. Anders Eldrup, former director of DONG Energy, is chairman of the board, and Maersk Oil s director, Kurt Normann Nielsen and former prime minister Poul Nyrup are deputy chairmen. We ve expanded the board by two people who, on the basis of their great experience, can match the growing market and know how to approach things strategically in terms of developing the sector. That s an enormous advantage, says Peter Blach. The two directors of Offshoreenergy.dk, Morten Basse Jensen and Peter Blach, are making an effort to develop the centre as the national focal point for offshore companies in four focus areas: networks, innovation/projects, knowledge-sharing and internationalisation. VISIONS FOR RENEWABLES Director Morten Basse Jensen The vision in the field of renewables is to become represented in the UK and in Germany inside the next two to three years in order to help our Danish member companies form networks with local companies. An effort will be done as well into internationalisation of the value chain with a view to helping the companies establish themselves also in the other large markets. In the home market, our focus is on an effort into efficiencyimprovement and development of products and processes across the value chain. The aim here is to help reduce cost of energy. VISIONS FOR OIL & GAS Director Peter Blach We re already involved in some of the large markets in that we have a staff of four at our office in Angola, two in Greenland and one in Brazil, and we re also looking at Norway. The aim is to help our members enter into a dialogue with local oil companies and other companies so they can achieve increased turnover in these markets. A large number of companies have already established themselves in foreign markets as a result of this effort. In addition to the foreign markets, we re focusing on research and efficiency-improvement in order to reduce oil production costs and increase the degree of extraction. We ll also make an effort to develop the field of sustainable oil production. Map of Denmark with areas representing offshore clusters or initiatives with which Offshoreenergy.dk collaborates. 7 ADVERTISEMENT 07 About The Port of Thyborøn port-based enterprises employ more than 1,000 people port-based enterprises in cargo, fishery and related services have an aggregate annual turnover of dkk 1.5 billion The Port of Thyborøn has decided to focus on offshore activities and has the facilities to establish and service both coastal wind turbines and an offshore wind farm. That is why it is an obvious choice to begin by locating the operating base for a coastal wind farm here. We are also prepared to service other wind power operators who want to establish offshore wind farms in the North Sea, says The Port of Thyborøn Board Chairman Karl Kristian Bro. The Municipality of Lemvig is at the forefront in terms of land-based wind turbines and already produces much more wind power than its inhabitants use. The municipality provided land for Denmark s first test centre for large wind turbines at Høvsøre, and a licence has been issued to establish the world s largest cooperative wind energy project at Nissum Bredning. A group of enterprises at the port are used to working with maritime services, Mayor of Lemvig Municipality and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Thyborøn Port Erik Flyvholm (left) and Chairman of the Board Karl Kristian Bro have secured investments worth dkk 200 million in the port since it was transferred to the municipality in A long tradition for wind energy and a strong network of offshore-oriented enterprises make The Port of Thyborøn an obvious base for a new coastal wind farm Did you know that The Port of Thyborøn... is Denmark s third largest fishing port... has a guaranteed water depth of 8 metres (expected 10 m in 2014) is the third largest cargo port on the west coast and we are in the process of establishing a network of related businesses called North Sea Offshore Service. By approaching a single contact, a wind turbine operator can get the services needed to install and maintain wind turbines, says Lemvig Mayor Erik Flyvholm who is also Deputy Chairman of the Port Board. He hopes that more business will create more jobs in the area. A reliable harbour Thyborøn s South Harbour is a test site for a newly developed wind turbine from Envision Energy. Envision Energy has no factory, but assembles the turbines on the spot where they are to be erected. We have the right wind and expertise needed, and the municipal approval took less than six months, says Karl Kristian Bro. Thyborøn has a unique position at the western mouth of the Limfjord. The harbour faces east and also serves as an emergency port as neither frost nor strong winds can force it to close. With a state-guaranteed water depth of 8 metres, The Port of Thyborøn is the deepest harbour on the west coast of Central Jutland. A jack-up rig can easily enter the harbour. We have a new port area of 150,000 m 2 which is ready for use. That would be perfect for a wind energy operator, and we are prepared to build the necessary docks, says Erik Flyvholm. The Port of Thyborøn has an efficient infrastructure with efficient railway connections to the port, and the motorway approach at Holstebro North as well as the planned bypass (at Klinkby) will further improve access to Thyborøn.

8 08 Offshore growth on the horizon TEXT: Marianne Sommer OFFSHORE GROWTH ON THE HORIZON DID YOU KNOW THAT... Horns Rev 3 off Esbjerg and Kriegers Flak between Denmark and Germany are the next offshore wind projects in Denmark HORNS REV DENMARK Britain, Germany and France are the most attractive markets for Danes, who are in a strong position in the competition for orders. However, in order to maintain this position, a different business strategy is required, according to director of renewables It s absolutely crucial to efficiency-improve the entire offshore process in order to help bring down cost of energy Morten Basse Jensen, director of Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables Overall, Danish offshore companies are, indeed, the companies that have the greatest experience when it comes to establishing wind farms. And this applies to the entire process from the moment when assignments are put out to tender to the moment when the turbines have been installed at sea. This is also true in terms of operation and maintenance. Morten Basse Jensen, director of Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables, explains: When you take an overall look at the entire supply chain, no other country can match Denmark. Companies that are as proficient as some of the largest Danish ones do exist in some countries, but, in fact, no other country can keep up with Denmark. Actually, it s only in the field of cable installation that the Danes don t dominate the world. He characterises the Danish home market as a competence and demonstration market. In Denmark companies can prove they are capable of selling their products and services, and this is crucial when they bid for assignments abroad, where there is great activity. When you look at what s to be installed until 2020, the Danish market makes up only 1.5 GW out of a total of 40 GW. Most of the coming wind farms are to be established in Britain, Germany and France, says Morten Basse Jensen, who was one of the main driving forces behind Djurs Wind Power. Local presence The Danes already dominate some of the foreign markets. For instance, the major part of a new offshore wind farm close to London was constructed by Danish companies. This is admirable, but it was, indeed, a challenge. There are two sides to this issue. The British, the Germans and the French aren t simply going to watch from the sidelines when Danish companies arrive, do the job, and then leave. Obviously, they ll expect local content, explains the director. Local content is a requirement that as much work as possible is carried out by local companies. This is why it is crucial that Danish companies focus on collaborating with local companies. Morten Basse Jensen adds: When you look at these three European markets, local presence is critical to Danish success. Or everything that can be done to collaborate with local companies no matter if it s strategic collaboration, mergers or purchases. Market opportunities When it comes to markets outside Europe, America seems to be the most attractive one. The first wind farm in the US is currently being constructed, but what the potential will be like depends on how big a significance shale gas will have as a future source of energy. Also Asia looks attractive as a potential market, and a few offshore projects are ongoing in that part of the world. The challenge is that many companies will be competing to win assignments and that these markets are very far from Denmark. It s a big decision to enter one of these markets; the most obvious way to do that is by means of a specific project. You don t simply establish yourself there and offer to build things offshore, says Morten Basse Jensen. Morten Basse Jensen s conclusion is therefore that the Danes should concentrate on the European markets, where there are good opportunities for becoming involved in the many projects. We must, however, not rest on our laurels. It s absolutely crucial to efficiency-improve the entire offshore process in order to help bring down cost of energy. This may well be done through alliances, purchases or strategic collaboration locally; in this way, capacity, competences and volume grow as well, observes the director The European countries are not the only ones that are going to install more offshore wind turbines in the coming years Source: A2SEA * Rest of Asia Pacific 0.7 NORTH AMERICA NORTHERN EUROPE EASTERN EUROPE CHINA ROAP* Expected development of offshore wind farms (measured in GW) Great Britain France The Netherlands Finland Norway Poland China Japan Germany Denmark Belgium Sweden Ireland USA South Korea Taiwan Vietnam

9 TEXT: Søren Dybdahl PHOTO: DONG Energy Offshore wind turbines move closer to the shores 09 OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES MOVE CLOSER TO THE SHORES Deal made on construction of six near-coastal offshore wind farms before 2020 THIS IS WHAT THE AGREEMENT ON NEAR- COASTAL OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES MEANS The Government agreement on near-coastal offshore wind turbines was made on November 28, 2012, and involves the following: - Six areas will be put out for tender with a view to installation of offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 500 MW. Interested energy companies can then bid for constructing each individual project. - The six designated areas can each have turbines with a total capacity of 200 MW. An area can contain several small projects. - Turbines in the designated areas are intended to be located at least 4 km from the coast. - Out of the 500 MW, 50 MW will be reserved for installation of offshore test and demonstration projects. - In addition, two offshore wind farms will be established one with a capacity of 400 MW at Horns Rev off Esbjerg and one with a capacity of 600 MW at Kriegers Flak in the Baltic Sea. Source: Danish Energy Agency Denmark is fast fulfilling its vision of covering half of the country s power consumption by means of wind turbines by The EU s common aim is merely 20%, but Denmark s ambitions run higher than that. Most recently, Anholt Offshore Wind Farm was erected, and this wind farm alone supplies 400,000 houses with power, which corresponds to 4% of total Danish power consumption. Anholt Offshore Wind Farm is the fifteenth offshore wind farm in Denmark, and several projects are on the way. As a part of a deal made between the Danish Government and a majority in the Danish Parliament, some of the offshore wind turbines of the future will be located close to the shore and make up so-called near-coastal offshore wind farms. Offshore wind farms such as Horns Rev and Anholt lie kilometres from the shore, whereas the near-coastal farms lie 3-4 kilometres from the shore. Director Morten Basse Jensen, Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables, explains: It ll be interesting to see if the near-coastal locations for offshore turbines will also result in lower installation and operations costs. There ll be a cost reduction because of the direct connection to the national grid in that an offshore transformer station won t have to be installed, but, if the rest of the costs will also be reduced still depends on the total supply chain s ability to optimise deliveries. Private individuals can buy stakes The locations of the six near-coastal offshore wind farms will be at Bornholm island, in the Småland waters, in Sejrø Bay, at Sæby, in the southern part of the North Sea and in the northern part of the North Sea. In these six locations, the municipalities have supported the installation of turbines, and private citizens will have the opportunity to become members of the circle of owners with a right to buy up to 20% of the projects. I m very satisfied with the great, local backing that we ve received in the selected areas. The next step will be to implement tenders in the areas that can ensure development happens in a way that s as cheap as possible for consumers, said Martin Lidegaard, Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, when the deal was made in the Danish Parliament. The six near-coastal offshore wind farms will have a total capacity of 500 MW, which is more than Anholt Offshore Wind Farm s 400 MW. Out of the 500 MW, 50 MW will be reserved for installation of test projects where turbine types will be tested and research will be done into, for instance, wave impacts and current and wind conditions. When the six near-coastal offshore wind farms and the two new offshore wind farms Horns Rev 3 and Kriegers Flak have been built, Denmark will have a total offshore wind turbine capacity of more than 2,500 MW. DID YOU KNOW THAT... The Danish energy company DONG Energy is behind more than every third of the world s offshore wind farms. 10 10 ADVERTISEMENT Q-STAR ENERGY aims for turnkey contracts in the wind industry The Esbjerg-based company supplies competent specialists for projects in the European wind industry. Q-STAR ENERGY is now ready to take on turnkey contracts. People at Q-STAR ENERGY know perfectly well where they are going in the wind industry. They want to install wind turbines, and they want to supply the whole package. Personnel and Project Manager Kasper Poulsen is certain that this is the way the wind blows. Wind farms are often put out to tender as turnkey contracts, and that is the way we are heading. We want to be able to take on projects from the beginning to the end. We expect a major potential in a new market, concurs CEO and Owner Henrik Hansen. Four years ago, Q-STAR ENERGY entered the wind business and currently Q-STAR ENERGY is headquartered in Esbjerg and has branches in Norway and Poland. The company was founded in 1993 by Engineer Henrik Hansen, who is CEO and the majority shareholder along with Niels Orla Rasmussen. Since 2009, Q-STAR ENERGY has also supplied manpower solutions for the wind industry. supplies manpower and safety equipment to a range of projects in relation to wind turbine erection. Many years of experience with the supply of manpower to the oil and gas sector both offshore and onshore, and in both Denmark and Norway could favourably be applied to wind energy. Much of the expertise we have acquired in the oil and gas industry can also be used in the wind industry, says Kasper Poulsen. Q-STAR ENERGY has supplied qualified personnel for assignments and projects in oil and gas since 1993, and the company currently have more than 70 competent specialists specifically for the wind industry. Over the past four years, Q-STAR ENERGY has carried out a broad range of assignments in the wind industry in Denmark, and in many other countries in Europe including Sweden, Finland, Croatia, Belgium, Germany and the UK. The company currently supplies manpower for wind energy projects in the form of electricians, painters, service technicians, rope access technicians and crane operators. They are able to paint blades, nacelles and towers, repair fibre-glass damages and install wind turbines. And they can perform service and maintenance on operating wind turbines. Supplying manpower in the right place and at the right time requires efficient logistic. Q-STAR ENERGY has its own logistic management and organizes transportation in the form of flights, ferry rides or taxi and coach transports in order to deliver the manpower as agreed with the customer.

11 TEXT: Marianne Sommer PHOTO: DONG Energy World champion in energy at sea 11 WORLD CHAMPION IN ENERGY AT SEA DONG Energy has constructed more offshore wind farms than any other company in the world. The most recent project was Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which was built at record speed and within budget DONG Energy and their suppliers are working constantly to optimise processes, which is reflected in the time it takes to set up a wind turbine. It has taken around 24 hours in total to set up each turbine at Anholt Offshore Wind Farm. When the company installed the offshore wind farm at Gunfleet Sands in 2009, the company spent 70 hours setting up each turbine. DID YOU KNOW THAT... Anholt Offshore Wind Farm was inaugurated on September 4, 2013, has a capacity of 400 MW and is the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark. Imagine a building project such as a reconstruction of a single-family house or the construction of a large building that is completed within budget and before schedule. Well, that is, indeed, hard to imagine. But that is exactly what DONG Energy managed to achieve when they constructed Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which was half as expensive as the 17 km long Great Belt bridge, that connects two parts of Denmark. Project Director Flemming Thomsen says: We obtained the concession on July 2, 2010, and one of the conditions was that the farm had to be operating before the end of We drew up a plan which meant the farm would be up and running in the summer 2013, and we managed to stick almost completely to that plan even by a small margin. He says one of the reasons for the quick implementation of the project was that the company strategically decided to invite tenders for some parts and also placed conditional orders already before the concession had been secured. In addition, he accentuates staff s dedicated effort and good planning. Flemming Thomsen says: We knew the conditions from the beginning and prepared a very robust plan in terms of choosing technical solutions and vessels. For instance, we decided that some tasks were to be solved by two vessels instead of one. And we also added extra time into the plan so if anything went wrong in one place, it wouldn t have a direct effect on the next activity that could have huge consequences. Danish dominance He also mentions the fact that skilled suppliers and sub-suppliers constitute one more reason for the success of the project. In their selection of suppliers and sub-suppliers, DONG Energy did not only look at price, but also at the individual solutions and good references that the suppliers and sub-suppliers, including a range of mainly Danish companies, were able to provide and did provide. As developers, we were required to abide by the ordinary procurement rules that apply to competitive bidding. On the basis of these conditions, more than two thirds of the orders were given to companies based in Denmark such as A2SEA, Siemens and MT Højgaard. This shows that Danish industry has a good track record in offshore and remains in a leading position. I m quite impressed by that, says the project director. Synergies across the board He also stresses the uniqueness of the local backing and collaboration in the area. DONG Energy s suppliers found many good sub-suppliers by the help of Djurs Wind Power, which is a network of local companies. Moreover, optimum facilities in the reconstructed Port of Grenaa and the good will of local citizens were important factors. Right from the beginning, we were very open about what we were going to do, and we organised several information meetings and exhibitions for citizens, who obviously had to endure all the transports of the turbines. It all came together, and the result was good collaboration and synergies across the board, concludes Flemming Thomsen. But even though the inauguration has already taken place, DONG Energy s work is not finished yet. The company has the concession for 24 years ahead and therefore has an operating organisation of 70 staff that will have its base in the Port of Grenaa and be responsible for maintenance and operation of Denmark s largest offshore wind farm. 12 12 ADVERTISEMENT A patented lift AH Industries enables its offshore customers to erect their wind turbines more efficiently. This service has proven a great success. Installing any wind turbine requires quite a crane, so imagine what kind of crane is required for installation in the open sea! Extreme lifting control is needed to carry all the components from large nuts and bolts to enormous, unwieldy blades safely to the top of the turbine. It is impossible to control the taglines attached to the yoke or load of the crane from the ground as you do at land-based wind turbines. At the same time, handling at sea is far more complicated because the turbines are to be assembled precisely where the wind is blowing most heavily in order to achieve the maximum effect, explains Business Unit Director Søren D. Petersen, AH Industries, which supplies components and solutions to the wind industry and increasingly to offshore wind customers. Fewer wind days AH Industries has concentrated its know-how on lifting equipment for wind turbines in a patented handling system. Tagline Master has full control of the components such as blades irrespective of wind movements on the way to the top. Our handling system can minimize the number of wind days which are days when winds are too heavy for work on the turbines. At the same time, the system facilitates handling and assembly which means far more efficient installation and a shorter overall erection period, Søren D. Petersen says. Another AH Industries product is a so-called C-Yoke that can be tilted 30 degrees. This is particularly important when the work has to be carried out at certain wind directions or speeds: By combining the two systems we get a complete lifting system that optimizes both safety and efficiency during installation and assembly. Many years of practical experience The two systems were not developed behind a desk, but by combining all the knowledge gathered as a result of many years of practical experience. We keep collecting data because we are constantly out in the field with our support and service teams. This data is very important for our solutions. We know what is needed and what is working, Søren D. Petersen concludes. Søren D. Petersen from AH Industries AH Industries was founded in 1987 and is owned by the Swedish equity company Ratos. Headquartered in Bjert near Kolding, Denmark, the company employs about 440 people in its two divisions: Wind Solutions and Industrial Solutions. AH Industries had a turnover of DKK 900 million in 2012 and recently opened an office in China in order to ensure a central location in the Asian wind market of the future. ADVERTISEMENT PIONEERS IN CONTROL SYSTEMS For three decades, kk-electronic has developed and tested its advanced control systems. The products are installed in over half of the world s offshore wind farms. Ever since supplying its control systems to the world s first offshore wind farm near Lolland more than 20 years ago, kk-electronic has optimized its products. And the customers reap the benefits of the advanced systems no other company has equipment that is so thoroughly tested. We are pioneers in the industry and have supplied control systems to more than half of the wind turbines that have been installed offshore worldwide, explains CEO Tommy G. Jespersen, adding: The challenge of supplying to the offshore sector is the weather. Harsh winds and the salt content of the water place completely different demands on equipment compared to land-based installations. We have specialized in equipment that can handle these conditions, the CEO says. This expertise has given the company a lead over many of their competitors. High quality and reliability Most producers have only recently begun to produce what we have developed since They will undoubtedly make some of the mistakes that we have made over the years you could say that we have already paid our lesson, Tommy G. Jespersen concludes. kk-electronic s long and proven track record of product reliability was the determining reason why one of the world s leading wind turbine producers, Siemens Wind Power, chose the control system for its offshore wind turbines. The same applies to several Asian producers. The target of the company and its more than 700 employees is to reach even further out in the world with their products particularly in Asia which is considered the largest growth market of the future outside Europe. 13 ADVERTISEMENT 13 Port of Grenaa has successfully handled the establishment of Denmark s largest offshore wind farm. The port, the city and the local business Port of Grenaa has prepared a comprehensive master plan for the port and its industrial areas in cooperation with Norddjurs and Central Denmark Region. By 2030, the fully developed port will have a four kilometre quay, a deepened harbour basin of 15 metres, and the industrial areas near the quay will be extended with 660,000 m 2. GRENAA READY FOR NEW OFFSHORE ADVENTURES community are ready now to take on new offshore projects both wind energy and oil/gas. In the wake of the successful inauguration of Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, Grenaa is now more than ever before ready and qualified to embark on new offshore adventures. The city has developed great experience in handling large projects, the port facilities have been optimized, and the city is future-proof with plans for an extension in and around the port as well as improvements to the road network. Furthermore, there is political support and a strong business network in DJURS Wind Power, which is ready to receive new businesses and projects. Grenaa has proven its capability to handle Denmark s largest offshore wind project. This involves logistic, space requirements, water depth, safety, official administration, and much more, says Port of Grenaa Managing Director Henning Laursen. It means that we can handle wind turbine transports to Sweden, Poland, Baltic States and other countries bordering on the Baltic Sea whether the turbines are destined for offshore or inshore installation. We also have experience in the handling of inflammable fluids and scrap from ships and platforms. The harbour front is also capable of receiving a large rig and repairing it or disassembling it safely and responsibly, he says. Unique network To deal with this type of assignments, the port cooperates closely with the business network DJURS Wind Power. The network counts more than 30 companies from Djursland and Grenaa which are all qualified to handle offshore-related projects. We are convinced we are stronger when we are working together. We proved that in connection with Anholt Offshore Wind Farm where the network members provided peak competencies in the planning, establishment, assembly, installation and operation of the farm, explains DJURS Wind Power Managing Director Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen, adding: The network is ready to accept new member companies wishing to move to Grenaa. We have a 24/7 service and experts and specialists who are ready with sparring and development. I am notified if a business wants to locate here, and then they will hear from me. This gives them access to the rest of the business community as well as a business climate and colleagues. The facilities, expertise and political support are in place, ready to handle more offshore projects in Grenaa, according to Port of Grenaa Managing Director Henning Laursen (left), DJURS Wind Power Managing Director Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen, and Mayor Jan Petersen (SocDem) of Nord Djurs municipality. Master plan for growth Local politicians are enthusiastic about receiving more businesses and projects at the quay. We are interested in growing and are solution-oriented. The basic attitude in this municipality is not whether it can be done, but how it can be done. So we promote dialogue we often meet at the round table to discuss solutions with the businesses, says Mayor Jan Petersen (SocDem) of Nord Djurs municipality. With these words, Denmark s sixth largest port measured by turnover has declared it is ready to continue the offshore adventure and has the facilities to do so. According to the port s Master Plan 2030, the port area will be extended in stages so that it will eventually have a four kilometre quay, a deepened harbour basin of 15 metres and another 660,000 m 2 of industrial areas near the quay. Furthermore, a bypass road north of Grenaa is on the drawing board and will open in a couple of years. We are a 100 per cent commercial port now and in the future. That is an important signal for us to send, concludes Henning Laursen.

14 14 Ground-breaking wave energy PHOTO: Wavestar Energy TEXT: Søren Dybdahl The wave energy plant at Hanstholm is still in the testing phase; however, when the plant has been fully developed, it will be able to produce as much power as a middle-size offshore wind farm. GROUND-BREAKING WAVE ENERGY Offshoreenergy.dk believes there is potential in transforming the rolling of the waves into power FACTS ON WAVE ENERGY 70% of Earth is covered by oceans. If it was fully exploited, the sustainable and CO 2 -free energy that is to be found in the waves could provide 15% of the global need for power. Also in Europe, there is a future in producing environment-friendly power by means of wave energy. Many different calculations have been made of the CO 2 reduction potential in utilising wave energy. All the calculations estimate that, potentially, CO 2 emissions could be limited by 15-20% in the countries that have the best wave resources. Source: DONG Energy An offshore wind turbine is a common sight today, but when Denmark, as the first country in the world, built an offshore wind farm at sea, it was a historic achievement. Few believed in the idea of moving turbines offshore, but since then the wind turbine pioneers have been enjoying a tailwind. History might now repeat itself in that several attempts are being made in Denmark to exploit wave power commercially. Watching from the sidelines, wave energy plants may seem a utopian attempt to create energy from the rolling of the waves, but, if one considers the success of offshore wind, it is perhaps no surprise that those in favour of wave energy believe this type of energy has a future. Niels Arpe Hansen, Wavestar Energy, invented the wave machine Wave Star together with his brother, Keld Hansen, and this machine is the basis for the company. Niels Arpe Hansen explains: Wave energy is one of the sustainable energy fields with large and promising potential. We ve taken part in, for instance, the development project Energy at Sea, and that has helped us develop the rocker arms for the plant at a much lower production price than has been possible in relation to previous constructions. I believe this is but one of several effort areas that has helped us get to the point where we ll be capable of delivering energy produced from wave power at competitive prices. Will not be the first At Hanstholm, the company Wavestar Energy has in recent years been testing a 1:2 model of a wave energy plant, and this work will, in time, Thanks to test projects such as Wave Star and other similar projects, we ve obtained significant experience of wave energy plants in Denmark Hans A. Pedersen, Project Manager Offshoreenergy.dk lead to the construction of a full-scale wave energy plant that can deliver power on market terms. However, Denmark will not be the first country in the world that acquires a wave energy plant. France has just decided to build one, and China has come far in developing a test plant that exploits both the wave energy and the temperature differences in the ocean currents in the South China Sea. It s very regrettable that enough attention hasn t been attracted to wave energy in Denmark and that there s not enough backing in this field for us to could become a pioneer country also in terms of renewables, says Morten Basse Jensen, and adds: Communication and making things visible are crucial aspects when it comes to ensuring political interest in a new industrial sector, and we re collaborating with the other players in the wave energy sector to improve the effort into these things. Project Manager Hans A. Pedersen, Offshoreenergy.dk Renewables, says: Thanks to test projects such as Wave Star and other similar projects, we ve obtained significant experience of wave energy plants in Denmark, and this experience will in the coming years become sought after in other countries. This is also one of the reasons that the international conference, European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference EWTEC was held in Denmark this year. A video containing footage from Wavestar Energy s test plant at Hansthom is available at

Foundations of the 30 wind turbines were completed on schedule. Design and installation of foundations of the 30 wind turbines were based on the traditional monopile concept. However the design catered for an increased ductility for the grouted connection. Hence the Ducorit S5 was modified with steel fibres. Prior to the project compressive tests were performed to minimize eventual operational risks through utilisation of fibres offshore to secure a smooth offshore operation. Traditional equipment fitted with dust-free capacity was utilized by the ITW Densit supervisors according to Method Statement from the ITW Densit Project Manager. Through the unique composition and high inner cohesion of Ducorit S5 the fibres could be mixed and pumped offshore to perform a well distributed and dispersed fibre content in the grouted connection fulfilling the special requirements of the design. 17 FREE HELP FOR SMALL SUB-SUPPLIERS New business facilitation project to remedy labour shortage in offshore sector TEXT: Søren Dybdahl PHOTO: Poul-Erik Rath Holm MIOS 17 Great activity in general especially in offshore wind has in recent years created a positive problem. The offshore sector is having trouble attracting enough labour and suffers from a lack of qualified sub-suppliers in a range of niche fields. Many small companies in, for instance, the machine industry and the plastic industry, have so far hesitated to become sub-suppliers to the offshore because of its requirements of documentation and certification and because of its safety requirements and high expectations in general. However, if the sub-suppliers will not approach the offshore sector, then the offshore sector will have to approach the sub-suppliers. And this is, indeed, happening. Through a business facilitation project called Micro-Companies in the Offshore Sector MIOS free help is offered to upskill companies for them to become sub-suppliers. The project is targeted at the so-called micro-companies with a turnover of less than 2 million a year and fewer than 10 employees. Still more companies signing up The project was launched in the summer holiday, and companies from all over Denmark have been queuing up to take part. The participants met for the first time on September 17, where they were René Pedersen from the metal works and machinery manufacturer Trio Nexø is contemplating focusing on the offshore sector. introduced to the winter s programme, and new companies are still signing up. Rene Pedersen from the machine factory Trio Nexø says: We ve earlier focused on the fishing industry; however, in connection with a generational change, it was obvious to look at opportunities in other markets. And the offshore sector is, indeed, an obvious choice for us; we have the expertise in processing of, for instance, stainless steel, and we have the machines needed to process metal items so they can be used offshore. This is why we ve decided to join the project. 350 potential suppliers It has been estimated that 7,000 micro-companies exist in Denmark, and 350 of these are considered to be of relevance to the offshore sector. Around 100 of these companies are located in Esbjerg, but the fact that a Bornholm island company such as Trio Nexø has joined the project shows that companies from other parts of Denmark have signed up as well. Micro-companies in the Offshore Sector is an initiative taken by Offshoreenergy.dk, supported by Esbjerg Municipality s funds for growth facilitation, where Offshoreenergy.dk collaborates with Business Academy SouthWest and Esbjerg Business Development Centre to look for and contact interested micro-companies. Interested companies are still welcome to contact Offshoreenergy.dk to obtain further information on opportunities to take part in the project.

19 TEXT: Søren Dybdahl PHOTO: Robert Attermann An abundance of opportunities ADVERTISEMENT 19 AN ABUNDANCE OF OPPORTUNITIES Further training may be the path to a job in the offshore sector Riggers, welders, crane operators, surface treaters, electricians, metal workers, scaffolders. It is not only engineers and highly trained technicians who are needed in the offshore sector. And as the sector grows, jobs are created for both unskilled and skilled workers. In recent years, stagnation and layoffs in other industries have actually meant that a steady stream of jobseekers have taken an interest in the offshore sector. Interest in further training and retraining has grown over the past few years, and many people have found jobs after having been retrained after holding jobs as abattoir workers or metal workers. This is evident at AMU-Vest in Esbjerg, where jobseekers are upskilled through short three, four or six weekcourses in order to work in the offshore sector. Poul Viggo Fisher, head of AMU-Vest in Esbjerg, says: There s an abundance of job opportunities in the offshore sector if you re prepared to undergo further training. There are many different types of jobs as long as you re ready to work in a sector with lots of challenges. If you re prepared to travel around the world, then you ll find many opportunities for doing just that. By the help of a relatively short further training course, many doors open that ll allow you to work in the offshore sector. Demand for labour Over the years, large sub-suppliers such as Semco Maritime and SubC Partner have taken on many new people because these companies have enjoyed growth for many years. Q-Star Energy supplies painters, electricians, riggers and other types of labour for project employment and for jobs in specific periods in, for instance, maintenance of drill rigs in harbours or offshore on installations during production shut-downs. This company has also taken on an increasing number of people. Henrik Hansen, Managing Director of Q-Star Energy, explains: Many sub-suppliers in the offshore sector are very busy, which means there s a demand for labour, and that goes also for people from outside the sector. We provide them with the required upskilling, and it s actually possible for people to change track inside a few weeks or months. Working high in the air One of the more special jobs that you can train for is the job of a rope access worker. This is a job where, by the help of climbing gear, people climb up offshore installations where it is not possible to use a scaffold or a crane. They then weld, paint, repair or install things 50 or 100 metres above the surface of the sea. This requires that you do not suffer from a fear of heights; on the other hand, you can be happy about the fact that you are working in a sector that has a very high level of safety and where far fewer accidents happen than in industries onshore. FACTS By the help of the right further training, the offshore sector offers many job opportunities. Many sub-suppliers in the offshore sector are very busy, which means there s a demand for labour Henrik Hansen, CEO of Q-star Energy A rigger is a person who specialises in lifting and moving large and heavy objects, for instance on an offshore installation or a ship, where there is limited space. Riggers have an important function at sea, where it is not possible to call a transport company or a crane company. The term rigger stems from the time when the personnel on a sailing ship could use the ship s rigging ropes and tackles to move the ship s supplies and other objects around.
