CSIRO Safety Our Journey, Our Science making mining safer Craig Roy August 2015

CSIRO Making Mining Safer CSIRO - Who we are and our breadth of risks The CSIRO Safety Journey so far HSE as an enabler in the CSIRO Strategy 2020 Our Science Making Mining Safer WASP MINESTAR Command Underground Longwall automation technology Designing safer open pit mines Safe analysis of Gold content Other science with potential mining applications Zebedee

Our mission: Create value for customers through innovation that delivers positive impact for Australia

CSIRO Our Safety Challenge Darwin Our People ~5000 Atherton Cairns Townsville 2 sites 64% of our people hold university degrees over 2000 hold doctorates over 500 hold masters industry partners Murchison Geraldton 2 sites Perth Alice Springs Rockhampton Toowoomba Gatton Myall Vale Narrabri Mopra Parkes 3 sites Irymple Griffith Sydney 4 sites Top 10 applied research agency globally Wodonga Werribee 2 sites Geelong 2 sites Newcastle Hobart Sandy Bay Bribie Island Armidale 2 sites Melbourne 5 sites Brisbane 5 sites

Our Breadth of Science and Risks Agriculture Energy Manufacturing Mineral Resources Land and Water Oceans and Atmosphere Health and Biosecurity Food and Nutrition Data Australia National Facilities and Collections CSIRO Services

Chile International Centre of Excellence in Mining and Mineral Processing Research focus shared challenges: Geometallurgy and Mine Planning Intelligent mining systems Mineral processing and metallurgy Water energy and environment Partners: Industry: 5 major Chilean Cu producers Research: University of Chile; University of Antofagasta; CICTEM Chilean government: CORFO

Safety Our Journey to Date 2007: Light bulb moment science & safety; not science or safety Our response..but still some ways to go Enhancing HSE Awareness and Culture Leadership as cornerstone Role of leadership; role of HSE Professionals HSE Information Monitoring and Review Health and Wellbeing Fatality Risk Prevention Environmental Stewardship People, partner & financial dividends

Our Science - Making Mining Safer WASP Wireless tracking of equipment and mine workers deep underground Uses small mobile tags attached to vehicles and mine workers with reference nodes at known locations Nodes communicate wirelessly accurately tracking the location and speed of objects Could be used to locate workers in emergency situations Has ability to send sensor data such as worker s heart rate, core temperature or gas or radiation levels in the surrounding environment CSIRO developed and commercialized by Minetec

Minestar Command Underground Autonomous navigation system for robots and automated vehicles Developed to remove mine workers from hazardous environments underground Increased productivity CSIRO developed and commercialised by Caterpillar in 2004 Adopted in more than 45 mines

Longwall Mining Automation Improved Safety and productivity Specialised remote guidance technology continuously steers longwall equipment, automatically plotting its position in three dimensions No longer required to stop production to manually correct positioning Around 60% of Australia s operating longwall coal mines have adopted the technology

Designing Safer Open Pit Mines Re-defined large open mine pit design for reliable mine slopes to minimise the potential for loss of life, equipment and sustained productivity losses due to mine slope failure Guideline for Open Pit Slope Design published in 2009 Work now being continued at University of Queensland

Safer Analysis of Gold content Potential Safety Issues with Current Process Dust inhalation when crushing and pulverising rock Handling of litharge (lead oxide) Handling of hot (>1000C) crucibles and molten samples Working with molten lead (fumes, inhalation) Working with acidic and/or toxic chemicals (cyanide solution, aqua-regia or other concentrated acids) CSIRO Gamma Activation Analysis (GAA) Simple, Minimal sample preparation Fully automatic Operators effectively shielded from radiation No waste

Zebedee Handheld 3D Laser Mapping system Creates a 3D laser map continuously, quickly, reliably and cost-effectively Mapping of mines, heritage sites, crime scenes and areas previously not accessible
