You have a basis here for civilization on its highest scale, and I am going to ask you a question which you may not like. Are you good enough to have this country in your possession? 10 In Portland...how we get there matters. The destination isn t as a thing or a place. For us, destination is a result of making choices. A result of our process; an embodiment of each community s choice and marking a shaping process

11 The resulting light rail projects, because they move over, under, around, and through our neighborhoods become chameleon-like While they require tremendous acts of will they re at their best when they aren t insistent

12 They reveal the community s heart, its values, and especially what it holds most dear.

13 Throughout the metropolitan region transit projects are not auto-cratic they are demo-cratic They engage citizens, businesses, institutions, governance, educators of all scales within their neighborhoods across all communities

14 Indeed, the rail lines and vehicles are robust, and are a strong visual presence But they also have to be nimble, alluring, and times deferential The best stations are calm confident and reassuring

15 As a total transit experience, TriMet seeks to inspire To reveal the activities and qualities that distinguish the city It doesn t insist on its own way but rather seeks to accommodate all modes without compromise

16 As a manifestation of the community s civitas light rail transit requires proper behavior of all activities. Making connections which are safe, convenient, and reinforce the community s best characteristics engender the spirit of the social bond of its citizens
