We're Trying Something New on March 2nd One of our ideas for a program this year is to have a "Competition Prep Night." We want to get more people involved in the competitions. So we'll be there to help with any competition-related issues you might be having. Are you having trouble choosing which photos to enter? Bring us some choices and we'll try to give you some insight into which ones you should submit. If you have your images printed, we'll have mats, mat cutters and mounting board available so that you can get your images ready to hand in. We may have a printer there in case anyone needs to get their images printed (no guarantees, but we're working on making this happen). Just bring your images on a CD or thumbdrive. Message From the President Greetings everyone, We have been blessed with a great winter of photography so far. Hopefully the snow keeps falling and making everything look clean and white. I challenge everyone to go out the next time it snows and shoot something in their yard. Open the door and look at that tree with a different perspective. Move up or down, look left and right. Watch the shadows of a tree in the morning or evening. Don't be afraid to get that rust of the camera so you are ready when the warm weather shows up. If you are a fan of staying dry and warm, go to the store and buy a flower or two and take photos of them. Use natural light from your window and backlight the flowers or use some shade. This is a great time of year to play with your gear and get to know it. Turn your lights off and try to change your battery. Press all those buttons and find out what they do. I know at my house the kitty model agency is always after me for testing my flashes on the cats. If you just want to be inspired look at other photographers website. I know in our group we have multiple people with websites. Check out pinterest and search for a style of photography you want to learn more about. 500px.com is another amazing place to see some amazing work. Member Q&A with Cindy Schaner 1) How long have you been into photography? I have always enjoyed photography to some degree, but about eight years ago I decided to buy a digital camera and I've been hooked ever since. 2) What was your first camera? My first "real" camera was a hand me down Vivitar that my older brother Ray gave me. It shot 110 film and I used for many years. My brother passed away in 2010, but prior to his death he repeatedly told me he was convinced I had found my niche in photography. He encouraged me to keep shooting. I wish he was here to see how I've progressed. 3) What camera(s) do you shoot with now? My Nikon D3200 was a birthday gift for my big 5-0 a couple of years ago. My Tamron 70-300 mm lens was a gift to myself. 4) What is your favorite subject to photograph? Nature. I love the serenity of sitting or standing quietly while watching it. 5) If you were given the opportunity to photograph any place on the planet, where would you head to first? Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to go to Hawaii. I would need an extra piece of luggage just to bring back all the filled up memory cards! 6) If you could go back in time and photograph any historical figure, who would you choose? I would choose Walt Disney for the opportunity of meeting him. Taking his picture would just be an added bonus. Can you think of anyone you know who, as a child, hasn't been touched or influenced in some way by his creative genius? 7) If you could spend a week being taught by any pro photographer, who would you choose? I would pick Steve McCurry. I love the way his pictures draw you in to tell a story. They are a combination of grit and beauty. Upcoming Photography Competitions Here are a few local(ish) competitions happening in the near future that our members should think about entering: Blair County Arts Festival - Entry Deadline is March 9th Ebensburg Art in Bloom Spring Art Show - Entry Deadline is April 3th Allegany National Photographic Composition and Exhibition - Entry Deadline is March 6th 3

Member Q&A with Nicole Schoch 1) How long have you been into photography? Around 10-12 years. I started at Olan Mills portrait studio and continued a love of photography from there. 2) What was your first camera? Nikon SLR 35 mm, but going back to my very first camera ever was a Kodak easy load (no loading film just pop in the film canister and go) 3) What camera(s) do you shoot with now? Nikon D3200 4) What is your favorite subject to photograph? Everything! However what I photograph most often are; my daughter, flowers and landscapes. 5) If you were given the opportunity to photograph any place on the planet, where would you head to first? A place with waterfalls, lush green lands, and all the colors in the world - However, some of the places On my bucket list are Fiji, Italy, and Hawaii. 6) If you could go back in time and photograph any historical figure, who would you choose? Abraham Lincoln. I would love to capture the honesty in his eyes. 7) If you could spend a week being taught by any pro photographer, who would you choose? Anne Geddes and Ansel Adams. Two different photographic genres but both amazing photographers. Anne for her creative mind frame and unique outlook on photography people and Ansel for his unique landscape photography Save the Date Old Bedford Village has set up their calendar of events for 2015. The Old West Reenactment is taking place on June 27th and 28th. This event is always a favorite photo op for a lot of our members.
