A Genealogy Report for Susan Helena May Every 1896-1999 Created By: Linda Taylor 23 Heath Park Road Romford, Essex RM2 5UB Tel: 01708 471271 lin.taylor@everyancestor.co.uk

First Generation Susan Helena May Every was born on 23 rd August 1896 at 49 King Henry Street, Islington, London. to Henry Frederick Every, a gas meter tester, and Susan. She was christened on 27 th September 1896 at St. Judes, Mildmay, just as May. She was known as May throughout her life as both her mother and grandmother were named Susan. In 1901 the family was living at No 1 Phelp Street, Stoke Newington and in 1911 they were living at 62 Wellbury Street, Forest Road, Dalston, London. On Christmas Day 1920 Susan married Sidney Herbert Pusey at St. Jude s church, Islington. Their witnesses were Henry Frederick Every and Henry William Every. They were one of six couples to be married on that day. Susan was aged 24 and Sidney, a widower, was 27 years old. Sidney was a platelayer when they married and they lived at 21 Boleyn Road, Dalston for many years. They had three children: Doris in 1922; John in 1924 and Albert in 1926. Susan died at the incredible age of 103 in a nursing home in Muswell Hill on 3 rd September 1999 Second Generation (Parents) Henry Frederick Every (Susan s father) was born on 19 th August 1875 in 16 Prospect Place, Back Road, Stoke Newington to Joseph John Every, a house decorator, and Caroline. He was christened at St Marks church, Dalston, West Hackney on 19 th September 1875. Henry had a difficult early life, his father died when he was only 2 years old. In 1881 he was living with his mother, his brothers Charlie, John and Harry and his sister Ellen at 134 Boleyn Road, Dalston, London. Henry also had an older brother, William, who was born in 1868. The 1871 and 1881 censuses show William living with his grand-parents, William and Ellen Glover at 49 King Henry Street. In 1881, his mother, Caroline was a widow and trying to keep the family by working as a laundress. By 1891, at the age of 15, Henry was also living with his grand-parents, William and Ellen Glover, at 49 King Henry Street. He is recorded as being a box maker. Soon after this he met and married Susan Eliza Jane Barlow. They were married on 15 th June 1896 at St. John the Baptist church, Islington when he was aged 20 and she was 19. Their witnesses were Susan Barlow (presumably Susan s mother) and Mary Law. Henry was a Gas Worker and they were both living at 59 Cleveland Road. They had six children: Susan Helena May born in 1896 Henry born in 1898 Sidney Charles born in 1900 Page 2 of 7

Emily born in 1902 John born in 1906 Albert born in 1910 Unfortunately Sidney and Emily did not survive beyond childhood. Henry worked for the Gas Company for many years. During the First World War he was a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Henry died on 11 th August 1927 in Queen Marys Hospital. He was 51 years old and had been living at 21 Boleyn Road, Dalston at the time. He is buried in Abney Cemetery. Third Generation (Grandparents) Henry s father (Susan s grand-father) was Joseph John Every. He was born on 20 th May 1845 at number 6 Gloucester Place, West Hackney to Joseph Edward Every and Hannah. When Joseph John was about 6 years old, the family moved from number 6 Gloucester Place to number 1. By 1861 the family were living at 32 King Henry Street, Islington and at the age of 16 Joseph was a paper hanger like his father. Joseph married Caroline Glover on 2 nd June 1867 at St James church, Shoreditch. He was 22 years old and she was 20. Their witnesses were Joseph Tate and Mary Ann Glover (Caroline s sister) Joseph lived at no 3 King Henry Walk and Caroline lived at no 29. Joseph and his father Joseph Edward were both paper hangers.. The 1871 census also shows Joseph as a paper hanger and that he was living at 4 Prospect Place with Caroline and their son John Edward, aged 16 months. They had five children: William born in 1868 John Edward born in 1870 Ellen born in 1872 Charles born in 1874 Henry Frederick born in 1875 Joseph died on 29 th August 1877, aged only 32, of heart disease or failure. He is buried in Abney Cemetery. Fourth Generation (Great grandparents) Page 3 of 7

Joseph John s father (Susan s great grandfather) was Joseph Edward Every. He was born on 21 st October 1818 in Southwark, Surrey which is now part of south London. He was baptised on 11 th November 1818 at St George The Martyr s church. His father was John Every, an Excise officer and his mother Elizabeth Mary. There are no records of his early years until his marriage Joseph married Hannah Swannell on 21 st October 1839 at the Parish Church, Hackney. Joseph Edward was a tailor at the time, living in Back Lane and Hannah was living in Gloucester Place, West Hackney. His father is shown as John Every, Excise Man. Their witnesses were Robert Potter and Elizabeth Glanville. Joseph signed the register, but Hannah was unable to write and made her mark. Joseph and Hannah had four other children: Sarah born about 1841 Joseph John born in 1845 Hannah Sarah born about 1847 Charles born about 1849 Mary born about 1851. The 1841 census shows Joseph and Hannah living in the parish of St John, Hackney together with their daughter Sarah aged 5 months. Later censuses do not mention Sarah who may have died as a child. Joseph s occupation is recorded as a tailor. When their son Joseph John was born in 1845 the family were living at no. 6 Gloucester Place, West Hackney. Joseph Edward is still a tailor. In 1851 Joseph and Hannah are living at no 1 Gloucester Place with their children Joseph aged 5, Hannah aged 4 and Charles aged 2. Joseph is recorded as a paper hanger. They also have Joseph s aunt Mary who is 54 years old living with them and a servant, Hannah Fokins aged 13. By 1861 Joseph and Hannah, aged 42, were living at 32 King Henry Street with their children Joseph aged 16; Charles aged 12 and Mary aged 10. There is no mention of their daughter Hannah who would have been 14 years old. She may be living elsewhere, possibly working. Joseph s Aunt Mary now 65 years old, is still living with them together with a lodger, Robert Cramond. Joseph is still a paper hanger. Their daughter Hannah married on 26 th December 1866 at the age of 19 and Joseph Edward is still shown as a decorator. She married Frederick Atwell who was also a painter and paper hanger. The 1871 census shows Joseph and Hannah at the age of 52 living at 44 King Henry Street with their daughter Mary, three nurse children and three boarders. Joseph is still shown as a paper hanger. By 1881 Joseph is a widower and living as a lodger at 142 Boleyn Road, with his wife s sister, Elizabeth Fleners. Although he is 62 years old and she is 68, they still have two children lodging with them, aged 4 and 6 years. There is no record of Joseph on the 1891 census so presumably he died between 1881 and 1891. Page 4 of 7

Fifth Generation (Great great grandparents) Joseph Edward s father (Susan s great great grandfather) John Every was born in 1791 to John Every, an Excise man, and his wife Sarah. John was christened on 31 st July 1791 at Saint Saviour s church, Southwark, Surrey. John married Elizabeth Mary, as is stated on his son Joseph s birth certificate. She was probably Elizabeth Mary Arnold who married a John Every on 27 th March 1815 at St Mary s at Lambeth. There are no verified records of John in the early censuses as it is a fairly common name and limited details were recorded. Sixth Generation (3 x great grandparents) John s father John (Susan s 3 x great grandfather) was born about 1761 probably in Southwark, Surrey. He was an Excise man and married Sarah Ashdown at Saint Olave church, Hart Street, London on 10 th June 1790. The 1841 census shows him living in Back Church Street, Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, with Mary Every and Mary Brooks. They are all of independent means and not born in the parish. Mary was born about 1796 and presumably she is his daughter and the same Mary who is the aunt of Joseph Edward and living with the family in 1851 and 1861. John probably died in 1844 as there is a record of the burial of John Every on 23 rd March 1844 in Stepney, Tower Hamlets. Page 5 of 7
