Wrap just above the base of the candle with masking tape. Following manufacturer s instructions on the bottle, mix the Paint Adhesion Medium with Terra Cotta and paint the base with this mix. Once dry, take a small deerfoot brush and pounce over the Terra Cotta basecoat with Burnt Sienna. Allow to dry, then repeat the second step by pouncing the base with Bittersweet Chocolate. Keep this loose, you want to be able to see all 3 colors on the base. Remove the masking tape. Using a Glaze Wash size 1 brush, apply a coat of the Paint Adhesion Medium over the surface of the candle itself. Do not mix with any colors, just use it straight out of the bottle. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS: Trace the circle and the scroll linework onto the side of the candle opposite where the electric cord is. Base the circle with several coats of Uniform Blue. Once dry, trace the design on your surface. For the tree, I simply traced a straight line down the center of the tree as a marker of where the tree should go. Using a 3 /4 angular shader, float Warm White on the area below the tree. I repeated this several times, allowing each layer to dry. Keep the stronger white color at the top of the drifts, you want to still be able to see a little bit of the Uniform Blue in the shaded areas. The tree is painted using the 1 /2 angular shader. With Forest Green, establish the main trunk by tapping it in with the chisel edge of the brush. Then, beginning at the bottom, start tapping in the greenery. Again use the chisel edge of the brush, point of brush down towards the bottom of the tree. Angle the brush towards the center line and work your way up to the top, narrowing it as you near the top. Allow this to dry. Next apply the snow, by putting Warm White on the toe of the angular shader and tap it on the tree in layers. Be sure to allow some of the Forest Green underneath to still show. Again, follow the shape of the tree, narrowing it as you work up to the top. 2 artistsclub.com
Using the large end of the stylus, dot Berry Red ornaments randomly on the tree. The birds are also done with Berry Red. They are so small that I simply used the stylus to place a dot for the head and a small oval for the body. With the 10 /0 liner, stroke in a few narrow lines for the tail. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly, then add the legs, eye, beak and a couple strokes for a wing with the Indenti Pen. The star is done with thinned Warm White and the 10 /0 liner. Add a Warm White dot with the stylus to the center. The snow coming down is randomly dotted on with Warm White and the small end of a stylus. Be sure to tap in a few flakes of snow on the tree itself and the ground. The scroll work and outline of the center circle are done with Glorious Gold and the 10 /0 liner. Shade underneath the circle with a sideload of Bittersweet Chocolate. Shade around the bottom of the candle where it connects to the base with Bittersweet Chocolate, keeping the strong color down towards the base. With a dry brush, lightly brush some Warm White highlights on the candle drips. Start at the bottom of each drip and stroke up towards the top, allowing the color to fade out. Allow the surface to dry completely, then varnish the entire candle with Dura Clear Matte Varnish. To give the bottom a more finished look, cut a circle from cardstock that is the same size as the bottom of the candle. Glue it in place with tacky glue. artistsclub.com 3
