Do They Trust You?
It s hard when you re always afraid You just recover when another belief is betrayed So break my heart if you must TRUST It s a matter of Billy Joel A Matter of Trust, 1986 https://youtu.be/6yychgx1fmw
Watch the video it s a heart-warming one. Despite the words to the song being all about breaking up and moving away. The song really is about bringing together and understanding what it means to build TRUST between two people.
Trust
Trust is about attracting, about building the team, about achieving together and about keeping the fire burning.
What does this have to do with business? Everything! Trust is everything in business! Trust is the mortar that holds together the team and builds culture. Whether it s trust between you and your people (do they trust you?) or between you and your managers (do they trust you?), or between you and your clients (do THEY trust you?) or between you and your peers (do they trust you?) or even between you and your loved ones (do THEY trust you?).
Because trust really is not about them. It s not about whether you trust others. It s not about whether others trust you. It is about whether you trust yourself.
Trust yourself!
If you don t have money, how can you give money to others? If you don t have self-worth, how can you give worth to others? If you don t have trust, how can you build trust with others?
Whether you re the Business Owner, the CEO, a CXO of any sort, a General Manager, a Supervisor, a Manager, a Team Leader, an Operator, or anyone in an organisation, your role involves working with others. If your role is about working with others, then you need to develop the tools that enable you to build trust first within yourself, then between you and others.
At the Vative Leadership Centre, our research has shown us that the secret to building trust is four simple pillars 1. Four aspects of our interactions with others that when acknowledged, understood and enhanced, will enable YOU to develop relationships based on trust. Our research has shown us that these 4 pillars or filters of Trust: 1. Capability 2. Communication 3. Truth 4. Empathy 1 Qualitative and quantitative data based on employees and their interactions in over 240 organisations
The Four Pillars of Trust
Capability How do you know whether the person you re interacting with has the capability to do the job you need them to do? (When you replace the words person and them with I and me you end up with a definition for yourself as opposed to others)
Communication How do you know whether the person you re interacting with has understood the why, what, how of your message? (The question you ask yourself is how well have I structured my message so that they DO understand my intent and buy into it? )
Truth This is the easiest of the pillars to understand The word trust is based on the word true. How do they know that you re telling the truth? How do they know that you re coming from purpose, and not ego Purpose is an intent that serves us, the team, and the greater good the organisation What is ego anyway? And is it always a dirty word?
Empathy How well can you review any situation from the perspective of others? How do you truly view and feel the world from the perspective of others can you truly walk in their shoes? And do they get your perspective and why that s important? And if you did and they did, how much more can you achieve knowing that you re now all singing from the same song book?
It s only when you can answer these questions, and learn how to create trust within your team and the organisation that you truly start to create a culture of unity, of common effort and achievement.
The Journey How will you know when a lack of trust is the root cause of cultural issues?
Look for these signs: Do you see a lot of tasks being allocated via email? Do you hear people say if only management knew what my job was about [insert reason for underperformance here] Do you feel like every time you want to create some changes, it s an uphill battle? Do you get a lot of but we ve always done it this way or if it ain t broke why fix it (and you know how to make it better)? Do you hear a lot of gossip? Or bad-mouthing of others? Do you see a lot of blame or people coming up with what feels like excuses?
