Unit One: Part One: The Science of Biology 1

Science Science uses evidence and an organized approach to study the natural world Science attempts to explain how and why things happen. Scientists study the world in an organized way looking for evidence and patterns to answer questions, explain observations and solve problems. Scientists propose explanations that can be tested by examining evidence. 5/16/2013 Are you a scientist? Averett 2

Science is a huge field, it is broken down into many subfields (branches) or categories. Social Sciences Natural Sciences Sociology the study of human society Psychology the study of the mind and human behavior Physical Sciences chemistry and physics Earth & Space Science Geology, geography, meteorology, etc. Biological Sciences Botany, ecology, & many more 3

Biology Biology is the general branch of the biological sciences that focuses on the living world. bio greek for life ology greek suffix meaning the study of 4

Most biologists specialize in one of the many branches of biology. Two major questions biologists ask are How does it work? and Why has it evolved to work that way? For example: How do these animals crawl? and Why do they crawl? 5

Structure and Function Principle of Complementarity of Structure and Function Structure and function are closely related in biology The structure of something depends on the function it is to perform. What something can do (its function) depends on how it is structured. Remember Form fits Function in biology. 6

Basic and Applied Science Basic science seeks to advance knowledge in a particular area of science It is driven by curiosity about a particular scientific question. Individuals study something just for the sake of discovering knowledge nobody yet has learned. It provides the basis for applied science, but its goal does not include inventing products for commercial use. Basic science indirectly contributes to the development of materials that benefit society. 7

Applied science is driven by the application of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems. This is the application of science to society s needs and problems. Scientific research is used to solve a problem or make something in society easier or better. Applied science applies the knowledge obtained from basic science for the purpose of inventing products for commercial use. Applied science directly contributes to the development of materials that benefit society. We often call this application of science technology. 8

Basic and Applied Science have a cyclic relationship Basic scientific research is performed to learn new information This new and improved technology is applied to research efforts allowing scientists to study and learn in new and better ways This new information is used to develop new and better technology What happens if we stop funding basic science and only fund applied science? 9

Ethics Ethics addresses the standards of what is right and what is wrong. Scientists need to know and understand the ethics of their culture and the accepted ethics of the global community. Scientific discoveries, involving both basic and applied science, often gives humans the ability to do many questionable things. Just because something can be done does not mean it should be done - Scientists need to have a sense of responsibility. 10

Biology and You The many decisions you make in your life will be based on your Opinions, emotions, education, experiences, values, and ethics. Many of these decisions will involve biology in one way or another Your health Politics Laws Medical privacy Genetic information Fertility laws Environmental issues Hurricane Abortion Alternative energy sources Cloning Medical research Conservation Medicine Food poisoning Diet and weight issues Pollution Disease Alaska oil drilling Stem cell research Marijuana legalization Biological warfare Allergies Tanning and sun exposure Endangered species Biotechnology 11
