M.Tech: Industrial Automation & Robotics The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore-08 (Established in 1946) Department of Mechanical Engineering
About our Institute and the Department The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore was established in the year 1946 on the threshold of India s independence. It is one of the premier educational institutions in India, offering 8 undergraduate, 11 post graduate and Doctoral programmes in engineering and technology. The NIE is an autonomous institute affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Belgaum, Karnataka. It has the distinction of having among its alumni personalities in high positions, academicians, successful researchers, industrialists, entrepreneur and leaders of world renown with their contributions to the development and economic prosperity of our country. The department has highly qualified faculty, with strong research background. The Institute emphasizes on bridging gap between academics and industry through development of centres of excellence in several areas of engineering field with the support of industry partners and relevant state of the art facilities. Presently NIE has 14 centers of excellence. The Mechanical Engineering department was established in the year 1958, and is designed to provide broad competence in basic Mechanical Engineering stream and provide deeper knowledge of major selected areas of current interest. The highly qualified faculties are actively engaged in research and consultancy works in the areas of Automation, Composite Materials, Fuels and Lubricants and Energy systems engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Department started M.Tech program in Industrial Automation and Robotics (IAR) in the year 2011, which is an interdisciplinary course. This course is designed to inculcate knowledge and skills to meet the demands of Automation industries.
M.Tech: Industrial Automation & Robotics SCORBOT-ER 4u at NIE Automation lab. Introduction of M.Tech-Industrial Automation & Robotics Programme Industrial Automation is the process of following sequence of operations with little or no human labour using specialized equipment and the devices that perform and control manufacturing processes. It is the science that deals with designing, creation and maintenance of robots which includes electronics, mechanical and computer science engineering whose blend is called Automation & Robotics.
Objectives of M.Tech (Industrial Automation & Robotics) Programme To produce quality engineers with multidisciplinary skills to cater the needs of automation industry. To provide the students with opportunities to work with ongoing research and consultancy projects. The M.Tech (IAR) program is supported by state of the art, hardware and Opportunities software. Career opportunities can open up in many an area ranging from automated appliances construction, automobile industry, building materials industry environmental engineering, traffic management & maintenance, medical engineering field, power and process industries, project engineering houses, system integration houses, real time software development, communication software development etc. The following are a few distinct career opportunities which open up on successful completion of this curriculum. Printing Technology Paper and Cement industries Wind and Solar Energy Process Degree: Plants M. Tech., in Industrial Automation & Robotics (IAR) Food and Packaging Duration: Two Years (4 Semesters, last semester is for project work) Press Shop and Injection Moulding Machine No. Seats: 18 seats Machine Tool Industry Automobile Course Outline Eligibility Criteria: Marketing and Sales of Automation Systems and Field Instruments B.E./B.Tech. Or Equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Consultancy Services for Plant and Process Automation Production, Automobile Engineering, Industrial Engineering Design and Engineering of Automation Systems Management, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Automation System maintenance in Industries Computer Science Engineering, Instrumentatation Engineering or Process maintenance Installation related branches. & Commissioning of Automation Systems Real time software development and maintenance Plant Administrator / Automation System Administrator Annual maintenance Contracts and Servicing on Turnkey basis
Scope and Career Opportunities: The scope of Industrial Automation is very wide which will lead to higher degrees of centralization. Now Automation is used in each and every company where machines are involved and some or other process is involved. It is done through PLC, SCADA, HMI, DRIVES etc. The following are a few distinct career opportunities which open up on successful completion of this M.Tech-IAR curriculum. Printing Technology Paper and Cement industries Wind and Solar Energy Process Plants Food and Packaging Press Shop and Injection Moulding Machine Machine Tool Industry Automobile Teaching / Academics Marketing and Sales of Automation Systems and Field Instruments Consultancy Services for Plant and Process Automation Design and Engineering of Automation Systems Automation System maintenance in Industries Process maintenance Installation & Commissioning of Automation Systems Real time software development and maintenance Plant Administrator / Automation System Administrator Annual maintenance Contracts and Servicing on Turnkey basis Product Engineering; Etc.
NIE Developments towards Automation Industries The NIE is in the process of establishing Centre for Automation Technology (CAT) with funding to the tune of Rs. 4crore, to support students of M.Tech-IAR to develop skills in the field of Automation Technology. Also, this centre has been identified as one of the competency development centre by the Automation Industry Association (AIA). NIE has already signed MoUs with the below mentioned companies for starting CAT at NIE. MOUs Companies: Bosch Rexroth Fanuc India Siemens Festo Controls Felsomat India Schunk Pepperl and Fuchs
Automation Industry Association NIE is one the prestigious college selected by AIA to develop competency development center in the field of Automation. This will enable the M.Tech (IAR) students of NIE to get exposure by directly linking with industry experts & obtain the practical guidance in their course and project areas. Automation Industry Association (AIA) is in the phase of standardizing curriculum at National Level for all automation related courses in country. The NIE has been selected by the AIA to develop Competency Development Centre (CDC) with the mandate to facilitate Campus Connect Programs and provide world class education in the field. This initiative has been taken, keeping in view the need of Indian Manufacturing Segments growth. The initiative to develop CAT has been started with funding by TEQIP II, FIST-DST. The facilities planned under CAT are: PLC & SCADA Laboratory Sensorics Laboratory Robotics Studio Drives & Controls Laboratory FMS Laboratory Software Laboratory
KCTU, Govt. of Karnataka has allocated Rs 50 Lakhs towards Robotic Research Centre to develop facilitates such as Articulated Robotic plat form, Robotic studio, and other necessary software s to build light weight through able robots for defense / security, e-vidya for teaching learning and vaidya for old age support and medical areas. The Main four pillars of CAT are shown in the figure below
NIE developments towards higher studies with foreign universities: NIE has signed co-operative agreement with leading foreign universities, namely, University of McMaster, Canada; OelWerme Institut (OWI), affiliated to University of Aachen, Germany; and University of Kassel, Germany. These collaborations provide opportunities for M.Tech students to take up academic visits and higher studies in these universities. Following below students who have visited Germany during 2012-14.
NIE VISION N.I.E. will be a globally acknowledged institute providing value based technological and educational services through best in class people and infrastructure. NIE MISSION Emphasis on transferring knowledge to aspiring students in the area of Automation technology Emphasis on updating knowledge through training to middle Management personnel Promoting Competency Development Centre (CDC) in line with guidelines provided by National level industry associations To bridge the gap between formal education and the demand of industries for personnel at supervisory level Introduce short term & long term job oriented courses Introduce distance learning courses.
