The Aero Aerial Volume 5, Issue 0 October 2008 Newsletter of The Aero Amateur Radio Club Middle River, Maryland Inside this issue: Ham Websites Hanna Night of Nights 2 Public Service/ECOMM Nett Reports Ham Radio On The WEB Update Station Activites Calendar 4 Info 5 A few years ago the Aerial published an article about Amateur Radio WebSites on the Internet. In that time some sites have come and gone as their sponsors either disbanded or became Silent Keys. New sites have emerged to fill the gap as well. So to bring our readers up to speed, here is a list of current popular Ham Radio websites. but is now a site where users can converse with each other and comment on the happenings of the day. Another similar site is www.eham.net which provides many of the features of QRZ but also is a source for product reviews. Of course don t overlook the Aero site at www.aeroarc.us. Al, KROJ, does a great job keeping the club site up to speed. A site offering web hosting for amateur radio is www.qth.com. E-QSL offers electronic logging and QSLing at www.eqsl.cc. Some the reader may already know. Others are new to the scene. A good site for taking online practice exams is www.aa9pw. com. Of course there is the ARRL at www.arrl.org. A good resource for general amateur radio information. Then there is www.qrz. com, which started as a call sign database look-up service Locally of course there is the Baltimore Amateur Radio Club site at www.baltarc.org. The Baltimore Radio Amateur Television Society can be found at www.bratsatv.org. Hanna ECOMM Dodges Bullet All eyes were on Tropical Storm Hanna as it traveled up the East Coast September 5-7. Although this storm was not a hurricane memories of Isabel loomed large for Baltimore County Emergency Management. Baltimore County RACES operators were put on alert while local officials monitored the storm s progress. Most communications to the RACES staff was done via e-mail with periodic bulletins of the storm s status was passed to the various teams. Hanna passed through the Baltimore area with mostly rain and moderate winds, but the anticipated coastal flooding did not materialize. Since shelters were not needed, RACES operators were sent a stand down message.

Page 2 The Aero Aerial WPGA GETS QSL From Ship to Shore Station KPH Every July 2th the Maritime Radio Museum sponsors an on the air special event called Night of Nights. The idea is to bring CW operation back to the Maritime bands if only for one night. The shore stations call CQ, send bulltines and even hanlde traffic from and to the ships at sea on the commerical circuits. Amateur Radio operators and shortwave listeners are also invited to peraticipate by sending swl reports to the stations they hear. There is even an amateur radio station, K6PHS that amateurs can contact. On the night of July 2th., Frank ACP and Pat ACF fired up the IC-706 MKII G to listen to the festivities. Local QRM made it impossible to hear the amateur station, but the higher power commercial stations could be copied with no problem. In additin to sending signal reports from Middl;e River under their own calls, Frank and Pat included on for the club call WPGA. In response Aero received an RCA Radiogram.
