Video 1 - Mindset Mistakes Welcome to the first video of our IM mistakes notebook video course. My name is Calvin Woon and I am really excited to share with you this awesome 13 part video course which wehave put together specially for you. And the first video I will be sharing with you the common mindset mistakes that is stopping you from achieving huge amount of success that you so desire. And there is a reason why I have decided to place this as the first video. Because this is really my opinion the most important video. And this is the part that is really stopping you from achieving success and adopting the right mindset right from the start is really essential if you wish to achieve success in internet marketing. So I really really urge you to watch this video first and really absorb all the content that I am about to share with you in this video. All right so let me just dive straight in. 3
Mistake number 1 Thinking it s a get rich quick scheme. OK, now most people get into internet marketing expecting to make a gazillion dollars within a few days and know they just expect instant results. OK, and I can really understand why because this is mostly attributed to all the hype put out by all the marketers out there. You know, you can see all the flashy cars and big houses and all those outrageous income screen shots and all those promises of huge riches with just a few clicks of the mouse. And in fact just recently, I had one private coaching student email me and he told me he just made his first 50 dollars online. Ok, and I was actually in fact very happy for him. But however the thing was, he was actually unhappy because he said to think he actually hear of so many stories of people making thousands of dollars per day and yet he only made 50 dollars in his first month. I mean seriously what was he thinking. I mean look are there are people who are making thousands of dollars per day? Yes, of course there are. But what you need to realize is number 1, this represent less than 1 percent of the entire internet marketing industry. Yes, you have heard that right. In fact, less than 95 percent of all internet marketers actually make more than 100 dollars online every single month. Yes, the truth sucks I know. And fact number 2, people who are making thousands of dollars per day you know did not suddenly wake up and realize they are making those outrageous amounts. And all of them actually took the time to really build 4
their business and it is a result of years and years of hard work. OK, so the bottom line is, is there money to be made in internet marketing? Yes, of course there is. But the problem is, if you continue to subscribe to the belief that internet marketing is a get rich quick scheme, believe me this is suicidal ok. And this belief alone will singlehandedly destroy and single chance you have for success because chances are that you are going to realize that it is simply not true and you will get jaded and eventually quit when you face the cold hard truth. So if you truly want to succeed in internet marketing, you need to approach internet marketing just like how you would for any business. OK, and that is you need to know that starting a successful and sustainable business takes time. OK, so stop approaching it like it is a get rich quick scheme k. 5
Mistake number 2 Not willing to take full responsibility. OK, now whenever we experience any setbacks or failures, we like to blame the whole world for our failures and lack of results. You know we blame our employers, we blame our colleagues, or we blame our friends, or blame our parents, or even you know when you fail in internet marketing, you like to blame those gurus out there ok. But the thing is, whenever something doesn t work in your life, you know and you play victim, the truth is you actually rob yourself of the power to take charge and change the situation. But however, if you would to tell yourself that only you are responsible for your success, it is going to empower you to make the changes when things go wrong. So you really need to start taking full responsibility if you want to be in-charge of your own results. So instead of blaming it you know on all the other ebooks you have read, all the gurus you have followed advice from, start taking full responsibility for your success. 6
Mistake number 3 Focusing too much on negative stuff. Ok, now I am not saying that, you know, that it is a crime to actually vent your frustrations. OK, we are all humans and we all need to vent our frustrations somehow and in fact it is not healthy if you decide to hold everything back and never ever share your frustrations. But, here s the thing, you cannot dwell on it forever. OK, now on the other hand, you need to focus your time on positive stuff. I know it is easy to say be positive and everything will be ok. But I m sure that you know when shit really happens and your whole world seems that it is going to crash, it is difficult to stay positive. But, here s the thing, you don t have to wait till things are going right for you before you actually keep a positive mindset. In fact, it is the other way round. When you start to feel positive about what is going to happen, positive things start to happen. When you focus your time on positive stuff, more positive results will come your way. You may have heard all those talks about the law of attraction and you know, it is really true. Positive people attracts other positive people in their life and this brings about more positive things. I mean don t you just love hanging around positive people and soak in all the positive energy? So, start being that positive influence right now. And you don t have to be successful in order to start being positive. And for goodness sake, stop whining. No one else owes you anything honestly. If there s an unfortunate incident in your life, you don t have to spend hours talking 7
about it in the forums and let the whole world know about it. If shit happens, just throw it away from your mind, and focus your energy on activities that will actually bring you results. And believe me this is going to bring more positive results your way. 8
Mistake number 4 Not willing to live out of one s comfort zone. OK, this is a big mistake as well. See, over time, we actually gather a set of constricting habits around us. OK, that traps us in a zone of supposed comfort so we always operate in a zone, in this comfort zone which we are comfortable in. And this zone actually determines what we think we can or cannot do ok. However, if you wish to achieve big goals, you need to break out of it in order to stretch your potential. In other words, you must be willing to stretch well beyond your comfort zone and do the things that will actually bring you to greater heights. OK, so let me just give you a personal example. A lot of people may not know this but I used to be a terribly shy kid. OK, in fact until up to today, I m still a little shy when I am meeting new people. And back in school, whenever I had to stand in class for presentations, I m always very very nervous and will break out in cold sweat. Now, but however when I started my internet marketing business, I knew that in order to bring my business to the next level, I really ought to be recording videos like how I am doing now. And, I really need to be conducting seminars as many people could actually benefit from the knowledge and successes we had. And seminars are an excellent way to actually reach out and impact people. So last year, I took a huge step out of my comfort zone and together with Patricia, we conducted an internet marketing seminar to close to 200 attendees right here in Singapore. And, it was the first time I have ever spoken to such a 9
large crowd. And to be really frank with you, before the event I was really really nervous as well. But, thank god it was a mega success. And we had countless of awesome testimonials and we managed to inspire so many of the attendees that were there. And another cool thing is that we actually make more than 30 thousand dollars in that one Saturday alone. So this is a really great example of what it means to be willing to step out of your comfort zone in order to achieve the goals that you desire. 10
Mistake number 5 Having the shiny object syndrome and in other words, lack of focus. So what is the shiny object syndrome? Now, by this I am referring to the latest opportunity or the newest fad or the most popular bandwagon you think you can hop on that will give you the big burst of success and this includes the secret loophole that you think will bring you unlimited amount of riches. And, the truth is we are constantly searching for the next big thing or the next big money-making opportunity. And, as a result, we never ever complete anything we wanted to do in the first place. Now, I am not saying that we should not embrace new ideas, techniques, or strategies. And, as an entrepreneur myself, I m also always on the lookout for new and better ideas and strategies to help improve my business. But the key to take note is, the next time, you know you start to get caught up in the new strategy or the new shiny object you know, just pause for a minute and take the time to really review and assess each shiny object in its proper perspective and really ask yourself this question. Now, will this help me help bring me to where I want to be? Now, when you ask this question, you know, you may not always know the answer especially if you are just starting out right? So, just assess it carefully and trust your gut feeling if you still do not know the answer and you don t have to beat yourself up if you end up on the 11
wrong track as this happens to almost everyone. Right, so just always be conscious not to fall into the trap of the shiny object syndrome and always try to remain as focus as possible. 12
Mistake number 6 Not willing to invest in one s education and business growth. OK, now let me share with you a code from Abraham Lincoln. He said I don't think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday. So the thing is learning is a continuous process, so you need to constantly upgrade yourself. OK, I am not saying that you should go out there and buy every single internet marketing course. Just buy those that will help your business right now. OK, as a business owner, you have to be willing to invest in your own, be it your own internet marketing education and your own personal or business growth. OK, business owners spend on the right tools and the right resources that will bring their business to the next level. OK, and your growth is not just limited to internet marketing stuff. You should always seek to upgrade yourself in all aspects of your life, be it personal development, relationships, etc etc. 13
And finally, mistake number 7 Afraid of making mistakes or experiencing failures. Now, this is another huge mistake that is going to stop you from achieving the success that you so deserve. OK, now understand this successful people look at mistakes as outcomes or results, not as failures. On the other hand, unsuccessful people look at mistakes as permanent and they take it really personally. OK, the most successful you are, the more mistakes, setbacks, and failures you are going to experience ok. I m not sure you know this at all. Every successful entrepreneur goes through a ton of shit first before they actually get to where they are. It s just that not everyone talks about it so don t think that if you are experiencing some mistakes, some failures, you are abnormal and you start to slowly think so lowly of yourself. Do not let this fear of making mistakes or failures stop you from moving forward and taking action. I know this is tough for perfectionist as they must always make sure that everything is perfect but this is a business you are talking about and there is just so many chances for you to screw up. So don t be so hard on yourself if you ever experience a failure. Just look at failure as feedback for you to improve and the important thing is you must sure to be able to learn them and don t commit your mistakes again. And just do it better the next time OK? And more importantly, don t let this stop you from taking 14
action because if you are constantly living in fear, this will just cripple you and you will never be able to achieve any form of success. 15
And mistake number 8 Not willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. Now, see here s the thing, most people would like to have or hope of or dream of success. But, the thing is it will only happen if you make it a must for you to succeed. So if you make it a must, you operate in a totally different frame of mind and you are willing to take all the action that is required for you to succeed. So you must make the commitment to do whatever it needs to succeed, provided of course it is ethical and legal alright. So do make the commitment starting today. 16
Mistake number 9 Not focusing on creating value. This is a really important mistake which I myself is guilty of making previously. I am always constantly thinking of ways on how to make more money until I actually attended once a seminar conducted by this bestselling author and multi multi millionaire called T Half Acre. And this one statement literally changed you know the way on how I approach my business. And he said If you want to make more money, focus on creating more value instead! Ok, so I literally heeded his advice and right now every single day the only question that I ask myself is how can I create more value for my subscribers and my customers. And the interesting thing is that when I started doing that, money flows to our business automatically. So, I really hope that this is something that will help you change your perspective as well. 17
Mistake number 10 Not knowing how to manage finances. OK, this is also a really big mistake committed by a lot of internet marketers as well as small business owners. For every business, you need to learn how to keep your costs low. You need to learn how to manage your finances well or else whatever income that you actually earn, whatever profits that you have, you know if you do not take the effort to actually keep your costs low, you will soon realize that you are actually spending more than you are earning. So you really need to learn how to manage your finances or else all your profits will be eroded. 18
Mistake number 11 Modelling after the oneclick scam artists. You know, I m sure you have seen a lot of those Clickbank launches these days where there is a lot of blind copy being used where the sales copy doesn t tell you exactly what the product is all about and they just tell you what the product is not. And they make use of all those hype, and all those almost blackhat persuasion techniques just to get you to buy. And, the sad truth is that a huge amount of marketers actually see the huge success of this one-click software launches have been producing. So a lot of marketers have started to model their sales copy after these blind copies. And I really think that this is a big big mistake because this will get you into a lot of trouble. In fact, just recently, Clickbank has actually made an announcement that they are actually also clamping down on this blind sales copy and they have actually introduce a whole new set of guidelines ok. And, it is meant to counter these misleading sales copies that is being practised by a lot of marketers these days. And, the FTC is also slowly clamping down on all these bullshit. So alright do not model after these one-click scam artists ok. They are definitely not your role models ok. Instead, you should model after those ethical and reputable marketers instead. 19
Mistake number 12 Learning more than doing. Now, of course, learning is good. You really need to constantly upgrade your skills and invest in your own personal education. But there has to be a balance. OK, a lot of marketers they know a lot. I talk to a lot of people and their knowledge is tremendous ok. They seem to even know much more than I do. But however, the biggest problem that a lot of people face is that even though they know a lot, they are simply not getting much results at all. So, you need to understand that you need to take massive action else nothing will be accomplished. OK, so always remember that there has to be a balance between the learning time as well as the amount of action you put in. In fact, the amount of action that you put in to your business should be much more than how much you learned. 20
Mistake number 13 Not setting milestones and take baby steps. Ok, so don t dream of making a million dollars in the next month or I mean in your first month OK? It s alright to think big. It s really alright to have a specific and big goal in mind ok. But, you need to understand that you need to take baby steps to and work towards this goal. So the best thing is to set milestones for yourself. So set short term goals for yourself. So you have a 3-month goal, 6-month goal, 1-year goal, and also a specific and big long-term goal in mind. OK, example your goal is to make 5 thousand dollars a month online, but you have yet to make a single cent online, you need to first learn how to make your first one dollar online. And then when you have done so, just work towards 50 dollars online, 100 dollars online, and so on and so forth. 21
Mistake number 14 Freaking out over every change. OK, now changes happen everywhere, especially in the internet marketing industry, there is always a lot of changes going around. I am talking about say changes related to the Google Adwords, related to the Google search engine in terms of SEO, in terms of changes related to Facebook, related to FTC. So don t freak out at every single change ok. Every time there is a change being announced, you see people whining and whining about it in forums. So your job is to learn how to adapt to these changes instead of freaking out alright? 22
Mistake number 15 Not starting with an end in mind. OK, here s the thing, you will never get to where you want to be if you don t know where it is. OK, how on earth will you get to where you want to be because if you don t even have an idea. OK, so you need to have a really clear picture of where you want your internet marketing business to go. OK, so you need to start with an end in mind and that will lead you to adopt the strategies and have a plan that will bring you to where you want to be. But all these, before all these can happen, you need to have an end in mind first. 23
Mistake number 17 Trying to conquer every niche. OK, this is like a Singaporean mentality you know, we have a term which we like to describe Singaporeans and that is being kiasu, meaning that we are afraid of losing out. And in the same context, when I was first starting out, I wanted to go into every single niche because I didn t want to lose out on every single profitable niche that was out there. But what I ve learn is that it actually pays off to focus on dominating one niche well first and then duplicate the process in other niches. OK, so this is something which I really urge you to bear in mind as well. 24
Mistake number 18 Not focusing on building passive income. Ok, here s the difference between active income and passive income. Active income refers to the income which requires you to work actively for, such as your job or you know in internet marketing terms, it could be if you are a writer, or if you are a graphic designer, you have to work actively for your income. On the other hand, passive income refers to income which you do not have to work actively for ok, so it s like profits in the business. You really need to focus on building a sustainable business that is able to churn you profits even without you working actively alright. And even when you are promoting affiliate products, it s actually worthwhile to think of actually promoting memberships because this will give you recurring commissions and this will bring you passive income because you don t have to continuously promote this product because you just promote it once, you make the sale and recurring commissions will just come your way automatically every single month. OK, the thing is you will never be financially free if you don t focus on creating passive income alright so always bear this in mind. 25
Mistake number 19 Having an employee s mindset. OK, here s the thing, as an employee, most of the time you just follow the instructions given from your boss and you will do just fine. However, as an entrepreneur, you are your own boss. Ok, so there s not going to be anyone telling you exactly what you need to do in order to be successful in your business. But a lot of internet marketers are always waiting for that step-by-step plan or system that is going to guarantee them the money. And they act as though everyone else owes them a living and it is other people s responsibility to tell them what to do and not their own responsibility. But don t you find this hilarious? So, if you wish to succeed as an entrepreneur, you ve got to remove this thinking mindset of forever waiting for people to tell you what to do. Instead, you have got to figure out what you need to do and then do it alright. Entrepreneurs make things happen ok! 26
And, finally mistake number 20 Being an opportunity seeker OK, opportunity seekers keep hopping from one idea to another. So, it s just like having the shiny object syndrome. They are forever trying to identify the best opportunity. However, on the other hand, a business builder focuses on building a business that is sustainable and also serves the interests of everyone. OK, this could include their prospects, their customers, their employees, and also their joint venture partners and affiliates. So, you need to start focusing on how to build a sustainable business instead of being that opportunist, opportunity seeker which is forever hopping from one opportunity to another.
