Diamond Dowel INDUSTRIAL SLAB ON GROUND Diamond Dowel designed for construction joints Tapered plate design allows for diagonal shrinkage Eliminates the need to drill or process formwork Design ensures sleeve is held perpendicular to the joint
Product Description Diamond Dowels are a plate dowel and sleeve system designed for construction joint applications in concrete slabs and pavements. Diamond Dowels are designed as a fast fix system that provides load transfer across the joint and minimises differential deflection between adjacent slab panels. Diamond Dowels provide a low cost in place solution by eliminating the need for the drilling or processing of formwork that is required with traditional round and square dowel systems. Diamond Dowels attach directly to wooden formboard or metal formwork plates and come prepackaged with all components ready for installation. Plan View at Construction Joint - When Poured Diamond Dowel plate 110 x 110 mm Sleeve allows for slab shrinkage movement 156 mm wide plate optimises material where stresses are highest Plan View at Construction Joint - After Shrinkage Sleeve and diamond shaped plate allows slab to shrink without being restrained. Slab shrinkage movement Slab shrinkage movement Slabs shrink away from the corners during curing. 150 mm min. Shrinkage is diagonal from the intersection of joints. Adjacent slabs shrink at different rates. Two way (lateral) movement must be allowed during the early stages of rapid drying shrinkage to reduce risk of cracking due to restraint. Diamond Dowel allows for free horizontal movement of the concrete without restraint with 45 tapered diamond plate geometry. Installation Process Step 1. INSTALLATION TOOLS REQUIRED: Hammer Spirit Level String Line Step 3. INSTALLATION Installation Mark the form for slab centre and Diamond Dowel spacing (typically 450 mm to 600 mm). Using 2 nails, attach the base to the form. Step 2. INSTALLATION Strip the form. This is best accomplished by starting at one end and working along the form. Step 4. INSTALLATION install any required concrete reinforcing. Place concrete. Edge of slab must be vibrated to consolidate concrete around the Diamond Dowel sleeve (avoid contact with the sleeve and vibrator shaft). Insert the Diamond Dowel plates into the sleeves (at centre point of sleeve) within 36 hours of concrete pour. The second pour can now be made. Installation Tolerances 1. Location = ½ x slab thickness ± 5% e.g. for 200 mm thick slab, location is 100 mm ± 10 mm from top of slab. This positions the dowel in the most effective location in the concrete, maximising shear load transfer. 2. Parallel to top of slab - one end of the nailing plate to be no more than 3 mm higher than the other end. If the dowel is severely misaligned parallel to the top edge of the slab, the dowel would restrict the slabs from moving parallel (i.e. laterally) to each other. 3. Perpendicular to the face of the dowel joint - the top of the sleeve at the apex should be no more than 3 mm higher or lower than the face of the sleeve behind the nailing flange. This kind of misalignment is normally considered to be worst case as this restricts joint opening during concrete curing. Slab Height ½ Slab Height ± 5% ± 3 mm max. ± 3 mm max. Limitations The dowel plate must be inserted into the sleeve as soon as possible after pouring concrete and stripping formwork, and no later than 36 hours after pouring concrete. To maximise the efficiencies offered by Diamond Dowels, use in those applications where joint opening is expected to be less than two times the dowel thickness [i.e. 12 mm maximum joint opening for 6 mm Diamond Dowels, and 20 mm maximum joint opening for 10 mm Diamond Dowels]. Research Finite-element analysis of one half of a loaded Diamond Dowel indicates that the maximum stresses are located at approximately ⅙ of the depth of embedment. A Queensland University of Technology (QUT) research program on different dowel systems, funded by Danley Construction Products, confirmed the efficiency of Diamond Dowels compared to other systems. Over 90 test blocks 1 m square x 150 mm thick were cast with round, square, plate and Diamond Dowels. Each test block was instrumented to record load and deflection before being loaded to failure. The research determined that Diamond Dowels have efficient load carrying capacity and are superior in minimising differential deflection. Based on these observations, it follows that Diamond Dowels can be used at wider centres than other dowels to transfer the same loads, thereby reducing dowel joint costs. Companion Products 1. 1. ArmourMate For edge protection of construction joints, Danley ArmourMate provides a range of solutions to best prevent damage and joint spalling associated with impact from materials handling equipment and other traffic. Joint edge protection systems can be incorporated into Danley full joint solutions with sacrificial formwork and load transfer systems. 2. PD 3 Dowel Cradle 2. PD³ Dowel Cradles are designed to provide a total contraction joint system solution by incorporating two systems in the one solution. The tapered dowels act as the load transfer system which provides lateral and longitudinal movement capabilities and reduces the risk of restraint. The wire cage acts as a chair and spacer to ensure the dowels are aligned and maintained at the correct height and spacing during the pouring of the slab. 3. Crack-A-Joint As an option to saw cutting, place Crack-A-Joint into the wet concrete along the joint line (above the centre of the Dowel Cradle), to induce a crack for the full depth of the concrete. The Crack-A-Joint is available in standard 3 m lengths formed from galvanised sheet steel to a height of 25 mm. It can be supplied as a plain joint or with a permanent Rip-A-Strip capping in three different colour options (Black, Grey or Sandstone). 3. 4. Ground Crack Inducer An inverted V-shaped PVC extrusion, 3 m long and available in 25 mm and 50 mm heights. It is positioned on the subgrade before the Dowel Cradles are placed. It produces a weakening in the slab that initiates a crack from the bottom up. Ground Crack Inducer is optional and should only be used when Crack-A-Joint is used, or when saw cuts are to made in the slab on the same day as the slab is poured. 5. Cradle Hold Down Hook 4. A small optional wire hook that allows you to anchor the base of your Cradles into the site sub-base. It prevents the Dowel Cradles from moving during the pour process. They hook over the bottom wire of the Cradles securing them to the ground. 1300 DANLEY (1300 326 539) www.danley.com.au sales@danley.com.au 5.
