Take a Note Created by Kay Hickman Use the ready-to-go design files from the BERNINA Exclusive DesignWorks Collection - Mod Petals #21011 to create a fun steno notebook cover. Use a design as is, or use the DesignWorks Software to personalize it with lettering for yourself or for gift giving. Supplies Machine & Accessories BERNINA Sewing & Embroidery Machine (5 Series, 7 Series, or 8 Series) BERNINA Large Oval Hoop and Medium Hoop BERNINA Teardrop Embroidery Foot #26 CutWork Tool PaintWork Tool CrystalWork Tool BERNINA DesignWorks Software (for adding lettering) DesignWorks Collection BERNINA Exclusive DesignWorks Collection - Mod Petals #21011 Fabric & Notions 7 x 20 rectangle of fabric for cover 7 ½ x 2 ½ strip of fabric for tabs 7 x 20 rectangle of Fuse & Fleece Two 7 x 16 rectangles of fabric for inside pockets 7 x 18 rectangle of fabric for lining 6 ¾ x 7 ¾ rectangle fusible web OESD Stabil-Stick Tear Away Stabilizer for PaintWork/ Embroidery Isacord Polyester Embroidery Thread Embroidery Bobbin Thread Organ Embroidery Needles DesignWorks Supplies PaintWork Supplies Edding 4600 Textile pen black CutWork Supplies OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away or OESD HydroStick Tear Away Stabilizer InnFuse appliqué craft film CrystalWork Supplies Parchment paper Crystal template material Crystal backing board Crystal transfer film 2mm (6ss) jet heat set crystals Design Components This project features Design #21011-14_DW Combo Flower. The design itself consists of PaintWork and appliqué/embroidery. The appliqué used in the embroidery process can be cut with the CutWork Tool. To do so, use Design #21011_CW Combo Flower CutWork Appliqué. The CutWork should be completed prior to the PaintWork/embroidery process. Refer to the section Cutting the Appliqué with the CutWork Tool for more information. Additionally, an extra sparkle will be added with crystals. To create a template for the crystals, use Design #21011_CR Combo Flower CrystalWork. This template can be created at any time, before or after the embroidery process is finished. Refer to the section Creating the CrystalWork Appliqué for more information. CutWork File PaintWork/ Embroidery File CrystalWork File 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 1 of 6

Mark Cover for Design Placement On one end of 7 x 20 front fabric, mark a horizontal line 5 up from the bottom edge. Mark a vertical line 3 ½ from each long edge. The intersection of these two lines will be the center for the design. Paint and Embroider the Cover Hoop Stabil-Stick Tear Away Stabilizer in the oval hoop by itself. Use the hoop s plastic template to mark the horizontal and vertical axis on the back side of the hooped stabilizer. Score and remove the paper revealing the sticky surface. Align the horizontal and vertical lines marked on the fabric with those marked on the stabilizer. Attach the hoop to the machine and select design #21011-14_DW Combo Flower from the BERNINA Exclusive DesignWorks Collection #21011 Mod Petals. (NOTE: if you wish to customize the design by adding lettering, refer to the Adding Lettering to an Existing PaintWorK Design section and then send the edited file to the machine.) The first color change of this particular design will be the painted portion of the design. Remove the needle and the foot from the machine and attach the PaintWork Tool. Refer to the instructions included with the tool for specific directions. Insert the black pen and paint the design. The second color change of this design is the Placement Line for the appliqué fabric. Remove any paper backing from the appliqué fabric, and place the fabric shape right side up over the Placement Line. Stitch the Tackdown Stitch. Continue stitching the design until the design has finished all color changes. Remove the fabric from the hoop, remove the excess stabilizer from the back, and clip any thread tails. Heat set the painted portion of the design following the manufacturer s instructions for the marker used. Adhere the 7 x 20 rectangle of Fuse & Fleece to the wrong side of the painted/embroidered front. Apply crystals using the appliqué created with the CrystalWork file to the front of the project. Positioning them so that they will not interfere with the quarter inch seam allowance. Add additional crystal appliqués as desired. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 2 of 6

Create Tabs Fold the 7 ½ x 2 ½ strip of fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch a ¼ seam along the long edge. Turn tab right side out and center the seam at the back. Press well. Cut strip into three 2 ½ pieces. Fold each piece in half crosswise. Place both raw edges of two of the tabs along the lower front edge of the embroidered piece 2 in from each side. Center the remaining tab at lower center back. Baste along lower edges catching tab ends and the Fuse & Fleece in basting stitches. Create Inside Pockets Fold the pocket rectangle with WRONG sides together (forming an 8 x 7 rectangle) and press. Slip the 7 ¾ x 6 ¾ rectangle of fusible web in between the layers and press again. Complete the Construction Lay the embroidered piece face up and place a pocket on each end with the folded edge toward the center. Center the 18 x 7 piece of lining fabric face down on top of the set. NOTE: The lining is shorter than the front and will not be caught in the two end seams. Place the lining so that an equal amount of the pocket fabric shows on each end. Stitch a ¼ seam around all four sides. Clip corners and trim seams as necessary. Turn to the right side in two steps: 1) Reach between the lining and the front of the cover and turn right side out. 2) Reach into each of the two pockets, grab the tabs and turn each pocket to the right side. Press well. Insert the front and back flaps of the steno book into the pockets. Insert a pen through the loops on the bottom edge and you are ready for note taking!. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 3 of 6

Cutting the Appliqué with the CutWork Tool Hoop a rectangle of OESD HeavyWeight TearAway or OESD Hydro- Stick in the medium hoop by itself. Follow the manufacturer s instructions to prepare the appliqué fabric(s) by backing it with an appliqué product such as InnFuse. NOTE: the Cut- Work Tool actually works better with multiple layers of fabric. Consider adding additional layers of fabric to use in other projects. Place the fabric(s) in the center of the hoop with the right side up. Remove the regular stitch plate and replace it with the CutWork/Straight Stitch plate for your machine and attach Foot #44C. Bring Design ##21011_CW Combo Flower CutWork Appliqué onto the editing screen of the machine. Stitch the Basting Stitch. Remove the needle from the machine and replace it with the CutWork Tool. Turn the dial on the front of the Tool to read l. Start the machine and cut the first set of cuts. When the machine stops and prompts you for Cut 2, turn the dial to 2 and cut the second set of cuts. Repeat this process for Cut 3, and for Cut 4. Remove the hoop from the machine. Carefully remove the appliqué shape(s) from the hoop. Use a small pair of snips or a surgical seam ripper to clip any stray threads. Set aside the shape(s) to be used during the embroidery process. Creating the CrystalWork Appliqué Bring design #21011_CR Combo Flower CrystalWork onto the screen of the machine. Attach the CutWork/Straight Stitch Plate onto the machine. Attach Foot #48. Remove the needle and replace it with the SS6 Punch.. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 4 of 6

Position the container with the SS6 plate onto the CutWork/Straight Stitch Plate. Consult the instructions included with the CrystalWork Tool for exact placement. Hoop parchment paper upside down in the oval hoop. Trim the excess paper from the outer ring of the hoop. Remove the protective paper from the back of the crystal template material and center it on the hooped parchment paper. Attach the hoop to the machine. Lower the needle using the handwheel to ensure proper placement of the container. Start the machine and punch the design. Remove the punched crystal template from the parchment paper and mount onto a piece of crystal backing board. Sprinkle the SS6 jet crystals over the top of the backing board. Use a crystal brush to position the crystals in the holes with the right side up. Remove the protective backing from the crystal appliqué film. Place the sticky side over the crystals and smooth in place making sure that the crystals are adhered to the film. Carefully remove the film from the template material. Place the sticky/crystal side over the fabric in the desired position. Cover with a pressing cloth and heat set the crystals according to manufacturer s suggestions. Allow to cool before removing the appliqué film. Adding Lettering to an Existing Paintwork Design Open the DesignWorks Software. In the New design dialogue box select Open Existing. Select the Zoom Tool icon and draw a box around the word Notes so you can better view the letters. Select the Rectangle Selection tool. The word Notes should now be surrounded with a red box. Select Edit Shape Nodes and small circles appear under each letter. Click on the circle under the N and drag it to desired position. Click on each of the circles on the remaining letters and move them to the desired position. Use the mouse s scroll week to zoom out until you can see the entire design. Touch the Rectangle Selection tool and the Sequence Manager should open. Select the words My Notes by touching that layer in the Sequence Manager. Change the blue color of the words to black by clicking in the lower right part of the black color square at the bottom of the screen. Click on the My Notes layer in the Sequence Manager and drag it down just above the first black swirls (layer 1). This will place the wording so that it will paint at the same time as the swirls. To send the design to the machine, select the Export icon and follow the prompts on the screen. If you wish to save the altered design for further use, select File > Save As and navigate to the location of your choice. Save the design with a different name so the original will not be altered.
