Living By Design It was Monday, November 14, 2011, and President Bill Bloomfield called upon Stephanie Skrbin, who counseled us to live our lives by design rather than by default, after which our two Popeye-the-Sailor-Men, Larry Johnson and Paul Allman, downed their spinach and led us in a round of Anchors Aweigh in honor of our Navy veterans.chris Ullman urged us to complete our fall dine-arounds.david Harris celebrated 20 years in the club.donn Ennis celebrated 45 years of marriage with Donna.Kathleen Terry reported on the club visit and tour at Chevron.Bill Bloomfield and Nelson Gray s wife Peggy kicked off the new Richstone tutoring program.patti Panucci introduced Sofie Kupiec, the Pacific School 5th Grader who sold over 125 Brace-Lets to support Casa Hogar.Sponsor Shannon Ryan introduced Rotary Scholar Hsiao Yun Kuo, who shared slides of her home country, Taiwan (a beautiful country with great historical significance, especially for those of us who remember Kennedy and Nixon debating about Quemoy and Matsu in 1960)..Ed Kushins completed his Navy submarine stories, which included his boat getting a Presidential Unit citation after trailing a Soviet submarine for 67 days without the Soviets knowing they were there. Craft Talks - Ken Deemer Our first craft talk this date came courtesy of Ken Deemer. After being kicked out of military school, Ken managed to graduate from MIT in engineering. He went on to California to work on communications satellites, but tired of big-business bureaucracy and returned east to get a business degree, focusing on entrepreneurship. He did marketing in Silicon Valley, then joined a venture capital group investing in technology, then broke off from that to form Internet Partners, then formed his own firm. From there it was Tech Coast Angels (consulting and investing) and then Social Venture Partners, supporting not-for-profit businesses together with his wife, Candy, and others. They first focused on his passion, education. He is now Board Chairman for the Environmental Charter School and is working on creating a hybrid high school focused on digital education. He and his wife have three kids: Brown grad Kevin, now in management work; Drexel student Andy, a musician who also knows technology and business; and Costa football player Brian.
Ken s dad, a Kansas U. professor, took a young Ken along for a year in South America reviewing university engineering programs, another year in Paris, and another year in Mexico City, not to mention RI Conventions (his dad was a Rotarian). Thus was born the traveling bug Ken and his wife and kids lived for a year in Barcelona. He loves adventure travel and photography, and travels annually with a group of friends who, after climbing Mount Ranier 23 years ago, have since climbed more mountains, up waterfalls, down into caves, and have generally devoted themselves to similar life-threatening-if-notinsane activities. Which is the state of mind that would lead a man to work on an upcoming documentary on the Burning Man Festival. Craft Talks - Nehal Patal Our second craft talk came courtesy of Nehal Patal. How do you follow an act as compelling as Ken s? Nehal showed us you do something completely different. She titled her talk From India to America. The interesting part of it was this: rather than tell us about it, she lived it right before our eyes. Nehal comes from a huge extended family in a small town in India. She lived a life of festivals, each an opportunity to eat, play and pray together. She came to the U.S. as a 13-year-old 10th Grader and hated her first three years here, missing her family and friends, but she precociously kept moving forward, graduating at age 20 with an engineering degree from U.Mass- Amherst. She went straight to work in airborne systems, learning American social mores on the fly. At age 22 she entered into an arranged marriage (the wedding was their 4th date), moved to L.A. and quickly ended up divorced. The thing is, Nehal s beloved family has still not accepted the divorce. Thus forced into independence (more like alone-ness), Nehal focused on work, joining Raytheon, starting with the E2D Hawkeye, a radar plane. Nehal realized that one mistake in the design of that plane could cause the death of innocent civilians, and she was hooked doing her work well became her passion. She got a Masters, worked on other planes, and then landed at Booz Allen as a risk analyst working for the Air Force. And she found another passion Eric. Torn
between two worlds, America and India, Nehal has been clinging to the people who make her whole her family, and Eric. The trouble is, her family is not accepting the American Nehal the fact that Eric is a pilot, an engineer, and a solid guy has not persuaded the family members who now disown her. And so she stood before us, still in the throes of sorting out these impossible life choices, and showed us who she is, still in the act of becoming. Hot Boats Ed Kushins lived on a hot boat a sub with a skipper who goes looking for trouble and has a Presidential Unit Citation to show for it. Ken Deemer has family, adventures, and a list of accomplishments that won t quit. Nehal Patal has decided that education has been her key to freedom and so formed H2D Vision, an arts education program for children. And these are just three of our members. To paraphrase President Bill s closing comments to Nehal: we each have 105 close, non-judgmental friends in this club, upon whom we can rely as we each find our hot boats and keep on becoming. Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Lindy's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
