STEP 1 - What s Included ICD201A Industrial Opto-Isolated RS-232 to RS-422/485 Repeater This Quick Start Guide USER-SUPPLIED COMPONENTS 10 to 48 VDC power supply; this repeater draws a maximum of 2.3 Watts. RS-232 cable; the converter is a DCE device. RS-422/485 cables. Recommended characteristics: 24 AWG twisted pair with a shunt capacitance of 16 pf per foot and 100 Ohm characteristic impedance. A DTE device is Data Terminal Equipment ; this includes computers, PLCs, and most devices that are not used to extend communications. Think computer for DTE. A DCE device is Data Communications Equipment ; this includes devices intended to plug directly into a DTE port including modems and devices that extend communications like a modem, such as RS-422, RS-485, or fiber optic converters or radio modems. Think modem for DCE.

STEP 5 - Ground Connection Figure 4. Ground Connection Black Box recommends that you ground the chassis as shown in Figure 4: Connect a grounding wire from the ground lug to a good grounding source. STEP 6 - Power Connection Figure 6. Power Connections Connect the power. Power requirements: 10 to 48 VDC. This repeater draws a maximum of 1.5 Watts. The terminal block will accept 28 to 12 AWG wire.

STEP 7 - Loopback Test / Troubleshooting Figure 6. Connections for Loopback Testing. Black Box recommends: 1. Configure the converter for RS-485 4-wire. 2. Jumper terminals A to C and B to D. 3. Connect a PC to the RS-232 port (see Section 3). Use a DB9 female to DB9 male cable to connect a PC to the DCE port. 4. On the DTE port jumper Pin 2 to 3 and Pin 7 to 8 on the female end of the cable. This loops TD to RD and CTS to RTS. 5. Using hyperterminal or a similar program, connect to the appropriate COM port. Turn off hyperterminal local echo. 6. Transmit the data. The same data that was transmitted should be returned, and the LED indicators should light per the table should light per Table 1 in Section 3.
