Goal-oriented investing We employ a goal-based approach to your wealth with an eye toward managing risk. With this approach, we match specific pools of money to each of your goals, such as retirement income, college funding or philanthropic contributions, and we create individual portfolios for each objective with appropriate allocations of stocks, bonds, alternative investments and, if needed, annuities. The Three Oaks team includes a full-time research consultant to help us build better portfolios just one of many ways we will invest in you. Investment selection To determine appropriate investments for your portfolio, we rely on a combination of our own research and the vast resources of Morgan Stanley s highly regarded Consulting Group. Depending on your individual situation, we use a combination of mutual funds, exchangetraded funds (ETFs) and separately managed accounts in our discretionary portfolios. Many client portfolios also include an allocation to alternative investments, which can increase the diversification of your portfolio and may produce competitive returns with less risk. The Three Oaks team includes a full-time research consultant to help us build better portfolios just one of many ways we will invest in you. Searching for value Our investment approach is flexible but value oriented meaning we emphasize securities we believe are currently (and, we hope, temporarily) out of favor and therefore priced below their true worth. We are not interested in chasing today s hot investment trend. Our approach is naturally contrarian. We believe that if everyone likes a particular investment, it s probably overpriced, and we will perhaps look elsewhere for future returns. In our experience, this is our best strategy for generating solid investment results over time for clients. Regularly monitoring your performance We know your goals can evolve in response to life-changing personal events, the purchase or sale of a business, or new financial realities. For this reason, we regularly monitor your portfolio, recommending adjustments as needed. MEET THE PROFESSIONALS The Three Oaks Team Teamwork is essential to our approach at Three Oaks. From our three financial advisors to our capable professional staff, we rely heavily on one another s strengths and skills. Nick Serenyi is a Senior Vice President, Family Wealth Director, and Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley s Three Oaks Group. He specializes in tax and estate planning, concentrated stock positions, the sale of privately held businesses, and philanthropic services. Nick graduated with honors from Harvard University in 1991. Before joining Morgan Stanley in 1995, Nick was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer with the United States Navy and spent four years on the USS John Young. After 20 years of service as an active reservist while also working in the financial industry, Nick retired from the Navy having earned the rank of Commander. As a Family Wealth Director, Nick offers his clients a greater level of personal attention by tailoring his strategies to the unique concerns of high net worth families. He is one of less than 250 Family Wealth Directors designated by Morgan Stanley nation wide, a status he achieved because of his sophisticated approach to the complex financial needs of affluent families. With nearly 20 years of financial planning experience, Nick believes in investing with intelligence. He does his homework, and thoroughly understands his clients needs and goals before developing an individually tailored wealth management strategy. Nick has a passion for simplifying the complexities of the financial world, which helps clients make informed decisions. To better serve his clients, Nick furthered his education by earning the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation from the College for Financial Planning. The CFP certification carries with it an ethical duty to look after his clients investments, which he extends to every aspect of his profession. Nick has been named to the Morgan Stanley s prestigious Master s Club, an elite group composed of the firm s top Financial Advisors. The appointment recognizes Nick s excellence in providing outstanding financial planning and wealth management services to his clients. Additionally, Nick is a member of the National Capital Region Financial Planning Association. In his free time, Nick is very active in his community. He is Chairman of the Board of Asbury Atlantic, Inc., and a Trustee of the McLean School. Nick also interviews prospective students for the Harvard University Schools Committee. Douglas Jarrard is a Senior Vice President, Portfolio Manager, Senior Institutional Consultant, and Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley s Three Oaks Group. He specializes in investment research, portfolio management, and developing comprehensive financial planning strategies for individuals, families and institutions. Doug graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science. He was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Seawolf nuclear attack submarine. After his time in the Navy, he began his career at Morgan Stanley in 1999. With 15 years of experience in wealth management, Doug understands the importance of developing intelligent and carefully planned investment strategies. He prides himself on completing thorough research, fully understanding the figures and conducting an unmatched level of analysis before choosing underlying investments. His analysis is ongoing, ensuring a financial plan is performing as intended once it s in place. Doug holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the Baltimore CFA Society. He has earned the Senior Institutional Consultant designation with Morgan Stanley s Consulting Group recognizing Doug s commitment to helping institutional investors achieve their investment objectives. Doug has been named to the Morgan Stanley s prestigious Master s Club, an elite group composed of the firm s top Financial Advisors. The appointment recognizes Doug s excellence in providing a wide range of investment products and wealth management services to his clients. Additionally, he is a member of the Association of Professional Investment Consultants and the Portfolio Management Institute. In his free time, Doug enjoys golfing and being with his wife and three children. He specializes in wealth transfer strategies and corporate retirement plans. Ryan graduated from McDaniel College with a degree in Communications. From there, he entered the financial industry as a Financial Services Advisor with Prudential Financial. Ryan joined the Morgan Stanley team in 2001. Throughout his career, Ryan has worked tirelessly to provide clients with the utmost personal care and attention. He carefully and thoughtfully listens to his clients to help them create financial planning strategies based on their specifically tailored objectives. Knowing that the markets move quickly and are constantly changing, he focuses on long-term strategic solutions and meeting the complex financial needs of families and business organizations. professional staff James Henson Consulting Group Analyst James Henson joined the Three Oaks team in November 2013, specializing in portfolio analysis and investment management services. He began his career at Mosaic Funds as a portfolio accountant, and has also worked at Tucker Anthony and Convergent Investment Advisors. James is a 1996 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, with a bachelor of arts in government and politics. In 2000, he earned his master s degree in international management from University of Maryland University College. James lives in Frederick, Maryland, with his wife and four children. Kristin Alexander Group Director Jessica Bowman Wealth Management Associate Megan Salmons Client Service Associate Kristin Alexander joined the Three Oaks team in August 2012 as group director. In this role, she is responsible for all aspects of client service while also serving as lead administrator for team coordination and communication. She began her career as a registered client service associate with Morgan Stanley in 2006. Kristin graduated from Villanova University in 2006 with a bachelor of science in business administration. She received an athletic scholarship to play Division I soccer at Villanova and was co-captain of the school s soccer team in her senior year. Kristin resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with her husband and their two sons. Jessica Bowman is a wealth management associate with the Three Oaks team. In this role, she is responsible for our clients technology and maintenance needs. In addition, as a fully licensed staff member, Jessica helps in the execution of client trade requests. Jessica began her career at Morgan Stanley in 2010 as an intern and joined Three Oaks the following year as a client service associate. In 2012, she became a registered representative and, most recently, wealth management associate. Her previous career experience includes customer service positions with both regional and national organizations. After graduating in 2011 from the University of Kansas with a bachelor of arts in philosophy and a minor in business administration, Jessica moved to Germantown, Maryland, where she loves to spend time with her nearby family and Rori, her Weimaraner. Megan Salmons, who began at Three Oaks as an intern in May 2013, joined the team full-time in December 2013. As a client service associate, she serves in an administrative role. She concentrates on daily operations, client service, and preparing client reviews. Megan graduated from James Madison University in 2010 with a bachelor of arts in psychology. After graduation, she worked at an accounting firm in Virginia Beach and subsequently moved to Maryland to join the Three Oaks team. She currently resides in Damascus, Maryland, with her dog, Cofi. She is an active member of Mountain View Community Church in Urbana and enjoys spending time with her nearby family. three oaks wealth management 15
