Notes The body of this cardigan is made up of eight large squares that are worked from the center out. Each sleeve is made up of 4 small squares that are joined into a single square, then formed into a cylinder. Join the squares using your choice of Kitchener Stitch grafting or the Three Needle Bind-Off Method. Body Using dpn and circular needle in larger size, make 8 Large Squares 38 (43, 48, 53) sts on all four sides of each square. Block each pc to 9 (10, 11¼, 12½)" square. Join Body Squares Notes: When joining squares, match St st edges to St st edges, and Rev St st edges to Rev St st edges. Follow the diagram for placement; the Rev St st quarters of each square are shaded in gray. The live sts can be joined using either Kitchener st grafting or the three needle bind-off method (use the larger needle to work the BO). Fronts: For the left front, join 38 (43, 48, 53) held sts each from Squares 1 and 2 along their St st edges. For the right front, join 38 (43, 48, 53) held sts each from Squares 7 and 8 along their St st edges. Back: For the left half of the back, join 38 (43, 48, 53) held sts each from Squares 3 and 4 along their St st edges. For the right half of the back, join 38 (43, 48, 53) held sts each from Squares 5 and 6 along their St st edges. To join the two halves at center back, join 76 (86, 96, 106) sts from one long side of the left half (Squares 3 and 4) to 76 (86, 96, 106) sts from one long side of the right half (Squares 5 and 6) along their Rev St st edges. Left side seam: Place the lower 49 (56, 64, 72) held sts from one long edge of the left front on a circular needle; these sts will be the 38 (43, 48, 53) sts from Square 2 and 11 (13, 16, 19) sts from Square 1 27 (30, 32, 34) sts from Square 1 rem on holder for armhole. Place the lower 49 (56, 64, 72) held sts from one side edge of the back on another circular needle; these sts will be the 38 (43, 48, 53) sts from Square 4 and 11 (13, 16, 19) sts from Square 3 27 (30, 32, 34) sts from Square 3 rem on holder for armhole. Working from the lower edge upwards, join the two pcs along their Rev St st edges at the left side, ending at the base of the armhole. Right side seam: Place the lower 49 (56, 64, 72) held sts from one long edge of the right front on a circular needle; these sts will be the 38 (43, 48, 53) sts from Square 8 and 11 (13, 16, 19) sts from Square 7 27 (30, 32, 34) sts from Square 7 rem on holder for armhole. Place the lower 49 (56, 64, 72) held sts from the rem side edge of the back on another circular needle; these sts will be the 38 (43, 48, 53) sts from Square 6 and 11 (13, 16, 19) sts from Square 5 27 (30, 32, 34) sts from Square 5 rem on holder for armhole. Working from the lower edge upwards, join the two pcs along their Rev St st edges at the right side, ending at the base of the armhole. page 4 of 6
Shoulder seams: For left shoulder, place sts from Squares 1 and 3 on either side of left armhole slit on separate circular needles for shoulder seam 15 (17, 19, 22) sts rem on holder at neck edge of each square. Join left. For right shoulder, place sts from Squares 5 and 7 on either side of right armhole slit on separate circular needles for shoulder seam 15 (17, 19, 22) sts rem on holder at neck edge of each square. Join right. Sleeves Using dpn and circular needle in larger size, make a total of 8 Small Squares, 4 for each sleeve 27 (30, 32, 34) sts on all four sides of each square. Block each pc to 6¼ (7, 7½, 8)" square. Join Sleeve Squares Join 4 small squares for each sleeve as follows: Join 27 (30, 32, 34) held sts from one Rev St st edge of one square to 27 (30, 32, 34) held sts from the Rev St st edge of another square to form a 2-square strip. Join another pair of squares to form a second 2-square strip. To join the two strips, join 54 (60, 64, 68) held sts from long edge of one strip to 54 (60, 64, 68) held sts from one long edge of the other strip along their St st edges. To join the 4-square sleeve into a cylinder, join the rem 54 (60, 64, 68) held sts from the side of one strip to the 54 (60, 64, 68) held sts from the side of the other strip along their St st edges 54 (60, 64, 68) Rev St sts rem on holders at top and bottom of sleeve cylinder. Join the rem 4 small squares of the second sleeve in the same manner. Join Sleeves To Body Join 54 (60, 64, 68) held Rev St sts from the top of one sleeve to the 54 (60, 64, 68) Rev St sts of left armhole opening (27 [30, 32, 34] sts each from Squares 1 and 3). Join 54 (60, 64, 68) held Rev St sts from the top of the second sleeve to the 54 (60, 64, 68) held Rev St sts of right armhole opening (27 [30, 32, 34] sts each from Squares 5 and 7). Finishing Sleeve cuffs: Place 54 (60, 64, 68) held sleeve cuff sts on 16" circular needle in smaller size. Join yarn at one seam, pm, and join for working in the rnd.
