The A. A. White Dispute Resolution Center was organized to foster public awareness and understanding of conflict resolution and the impact of interpersonal disputes on society. Blakely Advocacy Institute offers a wide spectrum of legal skills training courses. Course offerings cover the entire dispute resolution continuum from the initial client interview through the appeals process. Our classes are taught by some of Houston s most distinguished judges and lawyers. COMPETITIONS Hunton Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship Using the UHLC-derived Moot Court Rankings, the Championship invites the top 16 ranked moot court programs in the country to come to Houston annualy and compete for the National Championship. The competition awards more than $17,000 in cash scholarships for top teams and for top brief writers and speakers. National Mediator Competition Featuring two competitions running simultaneously, the unique format of this competition allows student mediators from across the country to serve as mediators for the UHLC s Tom Newhouse Representing Clients in Mediation Competition. The caucus model design of this competition makes it one-of-a-kind. The competition awards over $3,500 in scholarship awards. (Note: This competition was formerly known as The Jeffry S. Abrams National Mediatior Competition.) Write The Award Competition This international writing competititon provdies students who compete in the Vis Moot International Arbitration Competition the opportunity to complete the arbitration process. Competitors are asked to write the arbitration award for the Vis arbitration they just completed, allowing them a cap-stone experience to the international arbitration process. The winning submission earns the author s law school a $5,000 award. This competition is jointly sponsored by the Blakely Advocacy Institute, The Alliance for Diversity in Dispute Resolution, and the North American Branch of the Chartered Institute for Arbitrators. INTERSCHOLASTIC COMPETITION TEAMS Alternative Dispute Resolution Members of the ADR Team learn the techniques and methods of negotiation, mediation and other forms of dispute resolution and then apply these essential advocacy skills in national and international ADR competitions. Mock Trial The Mock Trial Team competes in a number of prestigious mock trial competitions around the country. Teams perfect their understanding of procedure and evidence to develop strong courtroom skills and persuasion techniques. Moot Court The Moot Court Team competes every year in a dozen or more national & international competitions covering a variety of legal subjects. Team members hone their appellate advocacy skills by analyzing and arguing both sides of a legal issue before a panel of judges. 2018 RECIPIENT Professor of Law, Emeritus Thomas C. Newhouse Thomas C. Newhouse, Professor of Law, Emeritus, taught at the University of Houston Law Center starting in 1966. He acted as Associate Dean from 1975-1978 and again from 1985-1988. Mr. Newhouse received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1957; his J.D. from the University of Tulsa in 1962; and his LL.M. from New York University in 1966. While at UHLC, he specialized in mediation, alternative dispute resolution, negotiations, and clinical practice. Mr. Newhouse was the Director of the A. A. White Dispute Resolution Center from 1992-1997, and he was the course director for the 40 Hour Basic Mediation Training class for many years. He retired from full-time teaching in 2002 but kept on with the basic mediation training for an additional 12 years. 2017 RECIPIENT Don R. Riddle 66 While at the University of Houston Law Center, Don R. Riddle was Associate Editor of the Law Review, a charter member of the Advocates student organization, and recipient of several special awards. He graduated with honors in 1966. Before entering law school, Mr. Riddle served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon graduating from UHLC, he began practicing law with Brown, Kronzer, Abraham, Watkins, and Steeley in Houston, where he became a partner of the firm in 1969. In 1974, he founded the firm of Riddle, Murphrey, O Quinn, and Cannon. Mr. Riddle is now in his 45th year as a Houston trial lawyer and has tried approximately 200 jury cases in federal and state courts throughout the country, some of which are among the highest-profile cases in history. Since 1995 Mr. Riddle has continued in private practice with his son, Todd Riddle (JD UH 94). 2016 RECIPIENT Justice Ruby Kless Sondock 62 Ruby Kless Sondock, a Texas Legal Legend and trailblazer in and out of the courtroom, was one of only five women in her class at UHLC where she graduated as valedictorian in 1962. In her first year of private practice, she argued a case before the Texas Supreme Court. She was appointed to the bench of the Harris County Domestic Relations Court in 1973, followed four years later by her appointment to the 234th District Court, earning her the distinction of being the first woman state district court judge in Harris County. In 1982, she was named to the Texas Supreme Court, becoming the first woman to serve on the high court in a regular session. Since retiring from the bench, Sondock has worked for many years as a successful private mediator in Houston. 2015 RECIPIENT Jim M. Perdue, Sr. 63 Jim M. Perdue, Sr., was the inaugural recipient of the UHLC Blakely Advocacy Institute s Lifetime Achievement in Advocacy award. Mr. Perdue is currently of counsel with Perdue & Kidd in Houston, Texas. He is a double alumnus of the University of Houston: he received his B.S. in Science, cum laude, and his Juris Doctorate, cum laude. Since his graduation from UHLC, Mr. Perdue has achieved more than five decades of unprecedented legal success in securing substantial verdicts and recoveries for his clients. He is a renowned author and lecturer on the topics of medical malpractice, product liability, professional responsibility, rules of evidence, the psychology of jury persuasion, and trial strategies and techniques. Mr. Perdue is also a highly respected adjunct professor at UHLC who has taught a popular Storytelling class at the school for more than 10 years.
