Year 8 Enrichment week trip to France and Belgium WWI Battlefield tour and Disneyland Paris 8 th 12 th July 2019
Day one Getting there The coach will leave school c. 8.30 am Ferry from Dover to Calais Then we ll drive to Ypres in Belgium
Day one - Ypres When we get to Ypres we will do one visit to a battlefield site Ypres was the centre for many battles between the British and the Germans during WWI We then go for dinner at Flunch Then we ll get back on the coach and check into our hotel probably an Ibis
Day two Ypres The day will be spent visiting sites including: A German cemetery Hooge crater you ll get to see original trenches here We ll also go bowling and then take part in the Menin Gate Ceremony
Day 2 - Hill 62 Sanctuary Wood Museum After WW1 a farmer reclaimed his land around what was left of the wood he had left in 1914. A section of trenches on his land were cleared of debris and casualties but the farmer left a section of a British trench system as he found it. This site is now one of the few places on the battlefields where an original trench layout can be seen in some semblance of what it might have looked like. There are also numerous battlefield relics and items of interest to be seen as part of the museum.
Day three Battle of Arras Visit to Wellington Quarry We descent 20 metres underground in a glass lift and experience what life was like for the people who built the tunnels and 24,000 soldiers who were secretly kept there waiting for the battle above to begin
Day three The Somme The largest crater ever made by man in anger!
Day four Disneyland Paris We drive to Paris on the evening of day three. All ready for day four a full day at Disneyland Paris and Warner Studios! All the rides you d like!!!!
Day five Vimy Ridge trenches and Monument Vimy Ridge was a particularly well defended area of vital strategic importance. After a number of failed attempts, it was the Canadians who, after weeks of careful preparation, finally took it. As we approach the front line in our coach, you will see that the landscape is pitted by thousands of shell holes. We will also tour visit the Canadian Memorial, towering above the valley on the highest part of the ridge. We will then visit The Cite de Europe Hypermarket, Calais before we get the ferry back to England.
Who, where, when, what why..? Who can go? Open to all year 8 students. Only 60 spaces (130 in the year) Where are we going? To France and Belgium. When are we going? 8 th -12 th July 2019 What are we going to do? visit WWI battlefields, memorials and trenches e.t.c. AND visit Disneyland Paris
What, where and how? What will we eat? Breakfast will be buffet style in the hotel, you will make your own packed lunch at the hotel each day and dinner will be at Flunch restaurants Where will I sleep? We ll be in a 3* hotel most probably an Ibis and you ll share rooms (usually 2 in a room) How much will it cost? 560 including all food How many spaces are there? 60
Do I need a passport? We are going to use a group passport. Your parents will need to fill in a form and send it into school with two passport photos.
Why go? This trip is a fantastic opportunity to see what you have learnt in lessons brought to life. Experiencing the trenches first hand is the best way to really begin to imagine what the soldiers went through in WW1 and empathise with how they might have felt. A visit to the WW1 battlefields is an experience that you will remember for a lifetime! You will be able to say that not only did you remember you visited and remembered 100 years on
How do I book a place? 560 in total payable by instalments Deposit payment on school gateway of 100 First come first served Released at 9.00 am tomorrow All forms need to be returned including a signed contract. If you don t bring in the signed contract to Mrs Lewis in the main school office you will lose your place. We will refund the deposit and offer your space to somebody on the waiting list. Last year we had a waiting list for the trip this year we have a bigger year group and the same amount of trip spaces Don t delay and don t just pay..
