1 1 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 REFERENCE Unless otherwise specified in these specifications or otherwise shown on the drawings, conform all work under this section to Section.. of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Standard Specifications for Highway and Structure Construction, current edition. SUBMITTALS Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for fence, gates, backstop, and appurtenances. Include plan layout; fence height; location and sizes of posts, rails, braces, gates and footings; product data; and erection procedures. Samples: Submit fabric, netting, and post samples, approximately -in. long or -in. square, for verification of polymer coating color. Installer Qualifications: Submit documentation of the installer qualifications specified below. QUALIFICATIONS Fence and backstop installer shall have a minimum of five years experience with a minimum of five layouts and installations of softball/baseball field fencing and backstops similar to this project. P A R T - M A T E R I A L S GENERAL All materials furnished shall be new materials unless otherwise specified. Salvaged materials may be used only when specified. All fence and backstop material is to be colored black. BACKSTOP POLES Provide -/ in., Schedule 0, steel pipe with black mil finish for supporting the backstop netting. Poles shall measure 0 ft from the finished field. Provide steel dome cap for each pole. BACKSTOP NETTING Provide # twisted, knotted polyethylene netting with rope border. # breaking strength. Color: Black. Include additional UV treatment. BACKSTOP CABLE Provide all hardware for top, vertical and bottom cabling for backstop. Top Cable: 1/-in. galvanized steel cable with associated hardware of cable ends, eye bolts, and turnbuckles to tension top cable from Pole to pole. Bottom Cable: 1/-in. galvanized steel cable with associated hardware of cable ends, self-tapping eye hooks and turnbuckles to tension lower cable to tension cable pole to pole along the top of the concrete wall. Vertical Cable: /-in. galvanized steel cable with associated hardware of cable ends, self-taping eye hooks and turnbuckles to tension cable from top of pole to top of concrete wall. FENCE HEIGHT The height of the fence shall be as shown on the plans or specified. The designated height of the fence shall be the fabric height. FENCE FABRIC Provide gauge steel core, two () inch mesh fabric, with knuckled selvage on bottom. Fabric shall be polymer-coated, fusion bonded, ASTM F, Class b, over galvanized, aluminum coated, or zinc aluminum alloy coated steel wire. 1 1 1 FENCE FABRIC FASTENERS Provide fabric fasteners of steel wire clips and tie wires galvanized in accordance with ASTM A-1, Class III, or aluminum coated in conformance with ASTM A-1. Provide fasteners for posts, top and intermediate rails, bottom rails, top tension wires and braces of gauge steel or 0. inch diameter aluminum tie wires. Provide fasteners for bottom tension wire of not smaller than gauge or 0.1 inch diameter aluminum tie wires. FENCE FRAMING Furnish posts and rails in accordance with the following schedules for the fence heights indicated on the Drawings. All fence shall have a top rail. 1 1 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 FENCE GATES Provide additional horizontal and vertical members as necessary to assure proper gate operation and attachment to fabric and hardware. Provide welded frames where corner rigidity is not sufficient to prevent sag. Gate frames shall be covered with the same fabric as the fence. Weld to provide rigid connections. Install fabric with stretcher bars at vertical edges. Attach to frame at fifteen (1) inches o.c. all sides.. FENCE GATE HARDWARE Provide heavy duty hinges of malleable iron, pressed or forged steel, non-lift-off type, adjusted to permit 0 degree gate opening. Provide two () hinges for each leaf. Provide heavy duty forked type or plunger bar type latches for all single leaf gates. Provide center stop and keeper for all double leaf gates. Provide spring latch for all sliding gates. Provide padlock eye as an integral part of all latches. FENCE POST TOPS Provide loop tops for inline posts. Provide dome tops for terminal, corner, and gate posts. FENCE TENSION WIRE Provide gauge tension wire conforming to the fence fabric used, complete with end clamps. Tension wire shall be polymer-coated to match fence fabric. FENCE STRETCHER BARS Provide stretcher bars of one piece lengths equal to the full fabric height with a minimum cross section of /" x /". Provide one (1) stretcher bar for each gate and end post and two () for each corner and pull post, except roll form posts with integral loops. FENCE GROUND RODS Provide a one-half inch diameter six () foot long copper clad rod to provide a ground. Provide one (1) for each 1,000' of fence, one for each separated fence section, and one for softball backstop. CONCRETE All concrete for post and pole base construction shall be Class BB concrete in accordance with Section 0 0 00. P A R T - E X E C U T I O N SITE WORK Prior to fence construction remove and dispose of all trees, brush, logs, stumps and other debris for a width of at least twelve () inches each side of the proposed fence alignment. CONCRETE FOOTINGS Excavate holes for footings to neat dimensions in firm ground to insure the post will be centered. Remove rock or other obstructions encountered to the required depth. Use forms in unstable soil and allow them to remain in place for at least twenty-four () hours after concrete is poured. Backfill, after forms are removed, with suitable material thoroughly compacted in place in layers to prevent settlement. 1 1 -
1 1 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 Backstop footings shall be seventy two () inches deep and twenty four () inches diameter. The top of the footing shall be set below finish grade of the field as shown on the Drawings. Chain link fence footings shall be thirty-six () inches deep and ten () inches minimum diameter. The bottom of the post shall be three () inches above the bottom of the hole. Corner, gate and end post bases shall be twelve () inches minimum diameter. Concrete bases shall be below grade at the post and have a smooth troweled finish. All softball field perimeter fencing shall be finished with an -in. concrete mow strip. Internal fencing without the mow strip shall have the footing tops held -in. below finish grade. Concrete footings shall cure for seven () days before placing tension wires. BACKSTOP POLES AND CABLING Set poles to be vertical at tensioning. The outside poles shall remain plumb with top cable fully tensioned and netting secured to cable. Set the top of the poles to 0 feet above finish field elevation. A concrete wall matching the finished height of the elevated bleacher catwalk shall butt up to each of the backstop pole. Set top cable with treaded eyehooks. Other eyehooks are to be self-tapping. Properly tension cables prior to setting the protective netting. FENCE POSTS AND BRACES Set posts in a vertical position at the required location and alignment. Set tops at the required elevation to provide a smooth profile at the top rail or tension wire without abrupt changes and in conformity with the general contour and which meets the approval of the Engineer. Place an end post at each end of each run of fence. Place a corner post whenever a break of 0 degrees or more occurs in the horizontal alignment. Set an intersection post in line with an intersecting chain link fence and brace it to the adjacent posts of the intersecting fence. Place an intermediate braced post where the vertical alignment changes by more than degrees, or a change in fence grade of more than nine () percent occurs. Where driven posts are specified, all end, corner, gate, and brace (pull) posts must be set in concrete. Driven posts shall be driven a minimum of thirty-two () inches into undisturbed soil. FENCE POST BRACING ASSEMBLY Post bracing assemblies consist of one (1) or more brace rails and a three-eighths (/) inch truss rod as hereafter specified. Provide brace rails the same size as the top rail. Provide truss rods with an adjustable take-up adapter. Install a single bracing assembly at each gate and end post location. Install a double bracing assembly at each corner post and all intermediate braced posts. Provide the bracing assembly with one horizontal brace rail and one (1) diagonal truss rod on all fences which have a top rail. Locate the horizontal brace rail in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. FENCE STRETCHER BARS Provide one (1) stretcher bar for each gate and end post and two () for each corner and pull post, except roll form posts with integral loops. Attach to posts with heavy duty pressed steel or malleable iron bands spaced at fifteen (1) inches o.c. FENCE GROUND RODS Connect at least three () fence wires to the ground rod by clamping, bolting or brazing. Ground rod shall be installed on line with fence. 1 1 -
1 1 1 0 1 Install ground rods as specified for each run of fence and install additional rods for each 1,000' on long runs of fence. FENCE FABRIC Install, stretch, and anchor tension wires to each end, corner, gate and brace post and properly attach to each line post before the fabric is placed. Pass top tension wire thru the post top rail opening. Install top, intermediate and bottom rails at proper locations. Hang fabric on the inside (playing side) of all installations. Attach the end of the fabric to the end, corner, gate or brace posts (except roll form posts with integral loops) by means of a stretcher bar threaded through the end loops of the fabric and stretched to remove all slack with proper stretching equipment. Secure the stretched fabric to posts, rails and tension wires with specified fabric fasteners. Install fabric fasteners on all posts at not greater than fourteen (1) inches o.c. and on rails and bottom tension wires at not more than twenty-four () inches o.c. Where a top tension wire is installed, fasten to the fabric at not more than eighteen () inches o.c. Repeat stretching operations at approximately every 0' for each run of fence. Make splices in fabric by interweaving a wire picket through each end loop of each piece of fabric. Each splice shall be subject to the Engineers approval. FENCE GRADE CLEARANCE For softball diamond provide a clearance from the bottom of the fabric to the concrete mow edge of one (1) inch. FENCE GATES Install gates plumb and level and adjust for smooth operation as intended, without binding or hanging up. CLEANUP After chain link fence construction is completed clean up all storage and work areas. Replace or repair as required all landscape features damaged or disturbed under this contract.
