WILDLIFE YOU CAN EXPECT ON THE CONSERVANCY It is one of the largest, zones of butterfly habitat! To date, more than 60 butterfly species have been recorded. The conservancy is predominantly grassland but includes patches of riverine bush, wetlands, and bushveld with a 6km riverfront. Antelope thrive on this sweet and sour soil rich habitat and include species such as Kudu, Eland, Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Impala, Blesbuck, Springbuck, Zebra, Red hartebeest and Klipspringer. These herds of herbivores attract predators such as Leopard, Brown Hyena, Jackal, Caracal and Serval. The WRNC protects a fine tract of Bankenveld habitat. This unique vegetation type contains elements of both grassland and woodland habitats as the reserve lies in a transitional zone between the warmer woodlands to the north and the temperate grasslands to the South. As such, the conservancy offers birders an interesting mix of species from both these biomes. The conservancy is known for a variety of birds of the prey species, including the Martial and the Verreaux s Eagle. Night birding can be productive, both Barn Owl and spotted Eagle-Owl are common in this area and Rufous-cheeked Nightjar often hawks insects in open areas. The Freckled Nightjar is an inhabitant of the rocky outcrops.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE All properties within the WRNC are full title and private, but access to fellow WRNC members properties is possible with consent. All wildlife roaming within the WRNC is owned and managed by the Luiperdskloof Game Lodge. A 4x4 is advisable, especially after heavy rains.
