Inmarsat Maritime A different approach Digital Ship Cyprus, April 2013 Frank J. Coles President, Inmarsat Maritime

Shannon s Capacity Theory Back to basics C = W log 2 1 + P N Where C = Transmit rate (bits per second) W = Bandwidth P = Power N = Noise Communication providers optimise the application of these three parameters for their users needs 2

What does the formula mean? More Power Higher Throughput More Bandwidth 3

Smaller beams = higher power Inmarsat 5 uses spot beams to evenly deliver higher power across the footprint and offer a Global, consistent service Ku Band Satellites currently use wide beams a number of which have a significantly larger power variance across their coverage Inmarsat-5 Power Distribution Higher power equates to higher throughput available to the user Intelsat Power Distribution 4

Ku Patchwork power delivery Existing Ku band satellites Wide beams used to provide coverage Power level of wide beams vary across the footprint Satellite reflects higher power at the centre of the beam and the power falls off as you approach edge of coverage Coverage is provided for specific regions and forms a patchwork mobile network A patchwork of different satellites from different providers means a mix of varying power levels which leads to varying performance The patchwork network infrastructure results in more frequent satellite handovers causing service interruptions for the users Intelsat Ku band satellites (as shown) provide wide beams with varying power levels across the footprint Varying power levels means inconsistent user throughputs Satellite handovers across different satellite networks will mean user service interruption 5

Intelsat EPIC Intelsat EPIC (IS-29e) platform will operate spot beams (as GX) in specific regions with wide beams covering other sectors High power in some regions Low power in others Level of Service available will vary from spot beam to wide beam Only IS-29e is under construction, IS- 33e is still in planning phases Intelsat EPIC available only in a very limited coverage area for HTS Remaining coverage has low performance compared to Global Xpress Global Inmarsat-5 Coverage Consistent Inmarsat Services Versus Inconsistent Regional Services

What are the barriers to change? Demographics Decision makers demographics make it harder to see IT as a value Infrastructure Office operations and process would have to change dramatically Belief in the ROI model Intangible costs are harder to believe Upfront investment is hard to stomach Need Don t believe the solutions would make the operation more efficient

Why change is inevitable! Demographics Younger crews demand internet access Infrastructure Regulators and authorities are driving more and more requirements Belief in the ROI model The state of the market and the leaders are showing the way Competitive advantage Need Required to survive

Regulatory Overdrive Crew Welfare Maritime Labour Convention (ILO): Compliance routes include crew internet/telephony provision (B3.1.11 j) and medical advice over satellite (B4.1.1a) Maritime employment identified by EU as a key route to economic recovery in South Europe IMO Secretary General focus on Safety Culture : January announcement on reducing maritime casualties by half by 2015 (NB c10% from fishing, c50% from commercial shipping today) Surveillance monitoring coming to the fore: IUU fishing high level forums held at Chatham House, Interpol & Global Oceans Commission E-maritime tendencies developing: Re-launch of e-maritime initiative at the EU pushing for reduced admin burden Autonomous ships under study collision avoidance in high density shipping E-maritime focus on intermodal communications (NB hazardous/perishable cargo)

Business Solutions are a requirement

Backbone Choice 1 Will your supplier be Viability there tomorrow? 2 Are there gaps or issues Stability with the service? 3 What is the standard Reliability of reliability? 4 Is there an upgrade path for Scalability improved service? Upgradeability 5 What are the plans for the next generation service?

This time next year First Inmarsat-5 satellite launched In-orbit testing well underway Preparing for alpha & beta testing Counting down to commercial service over the Indian Ocean region
