L 13 380mm & Yes 57 a & b Thirteen tin-glazed earthenware shards of which eight & two conjoin from a large Dutch charger in a sandy off white fabric with fine black specks and very sparse hematite: Decorated on its upper surface with blue on blue painting in the Carrack style. The reverse has been covered in a pale blue glaze over which has been painted two vertical strokes and a small circle (illus 57b). The well worn shallow footrim shows evidence of two pierced hanging holes (illus 57b). Date c. 1700. A dish dated c 1660-1670 with similar but not identical border decoration is shown in (van Dam 2004, 34, Ill.11)
2 (No 7-2) 1162 Plate 10 230mm & 58 Ten tin-glazed earthenware shards of which five & four conjoin from a dished plate in a sandy offwhite paste containing fine black specks: Decorated on its upper surface with a distinctive deep blue Chinoiserie design. The reverse shows typical glaze pitting. Date c. 1710-20 (No 7-3) 1314 Dish 14 25mm 200mm & 59 Fourteen tin-glazed earthenware shards of which nine and two conjoin from a flat based flanged plate with a slightly beaded rim in a buff paste: Traces of dark blue panting over a light blue glaze which has almost totally flaked from the body. Date c. 1710-20
3 (No 7-4) 1139 2. Dishes 18 25mm 220mm & 60 Eighteen tin-glazed earthenware shards of which fifteen & three conjoin from two flat based dishes in buff paste decorated in dark blue over a white glaze on their interior with a common stylized 18 th century Dutch design. The fragments of both backs are covered in a typical white pitted glaze. The ribbon decorated handle of the pot is shown on a Dutch salt, c 1720 in (Matusz, 1977 56). (No 7-5) 1139 Plate 6 24mm 200mm & 61 Six tin-glazed earthenware shards of which four and two conjoin from a well painted Dutch plate decorated with a blue sprig and leaves and a stylized border of dots and conjoined crescents within three thin blue bands. There is a footrim and typical glaze pitting on reverse.
4 (No 7-6) Also conjoining shards from (1132) 1139 Plate 21 28mm 240 mm & 61 Twenty one tinglazed earthenware shards of which eighteen and two conjoin forming fragments of a plate decorated with a dark blue perching bird, stylized bushes and fruit. The plate has no footrim and the back shows typical pitting. Dutch c. 1720.. (No 7-7) 1139 Plates 5 180mm & 62 Five tin-glazed earthenware shards of which two and two conjoin from two smallish Dutch plates glazed on both surfaces and decorated with light blue painted borders and internal bands. There are also traces of a painted central design. It shows typical glaze pitting on its back.
5 (No 7-8) 1314 Plate 1 220mm & 63 One rim shard from a tin-glazed earthenware plate glazed on both surfaces and decorated with a typical blue painted diaper and floral Dutch border. The back shows extensive pitting. (No 7-9) 1220 Plate 1 64 One body shard from a tin-glazed earthenware plate glazed on both surfaces and decorated with what looks like an all over pattern. It has extensive pitting on its reverse and a small perforated hole suggesting a typical 18 th century riveted repair.
6 (No 7-10) (Also conjoining shards from (1132) 1152 Plate 9 220mm & 65 Nine tin-glazed earthenware shards of which three and two conjoin from a plate with a stepped rim. It is glazed on both surfaces with typical pitting on its back. No footrim. Decorated in blue with a stylised border, a band of flowers and a central vignette? Dutch c 1720 (No 7-11) Also conjoining shards from (1152) 1139 Plate 6 240mm & 66 Six tin-glazed earthenware shards of which two and two conjoin from a plate glazed on both surfaces and pitted on its back. Where the blue cobalt painting is thickest it has degraded and turned a yellow/brown.
7 (No 7-12) Also conjoining shards from (1162) 1139 Plates 4 67 Four tin-glazed earthenware shards of which three may be from the same plate. The shards are glazed on both surfaces and pitted on their bases. They are decorated in what is known as the Mimosa pattern which was produced by a large number of potteries both in Britain and the Continent. One of the plates has a footrim and one is flat. (No 7-13) (Also contexts 1626 & Unstratified) (17 th century) 1164 Chargers 3 68 Three thick tin-glazed earthenware shards from three different vessels, probably chargers of 17 th date, and all with lead glaze on the back: Shard 1164 has part of a base ring and pale cobalt blue decoration while 1626 is from the centre of a vessel with a stylized dark blue geometric design. The unstratified shard has traces of dark painting.
8 (No 7-14) 1139 Dish 2 200mm & 69 Two conjoining tinglazed earthenware shards from the rim and shoulder of a dish with no footrim and glazed on both surfaces: decorated with four dots within a diaper pattern which almost certainly alternates with stylized flowers similar to no 4 above. Dutch c 1730 (No 7-15) Also contexts 1142, 1220 & Unstratified) (18 th century) 1162 Plates? 4 70 Four tin-glazed earthenware rim shards from four different vessels all with different cobalt blue painted designs, all of 18 th century date.
9 (No 7-16) (Poss. second half of the 17 th century) 1152 Charger 1 71 One small rim shard from a tin-glazed earthenware vessel decorated on its edge with blue dashes suggesting that it may be a small blue dash charger, of late 17 th century date. Lead glazed on its back and the fabric is brick red and looks if it has a Continental origin. (No 7-17) 1139 Plates? 4 72 Four tin-glazed earthenware rim shards all decorated with cobalt painting and a brown line on the edge of their rims. It is difficult to be sure how many vessels are represented but probably three. The top right shard is from a very small plate.
10 (No 7-18) 1139 Plates? 2 72 Two tin-glazed earthenware shards probably from two plates, one with a hanging hole in its footrim. Decorated with what look like light and dark blue cobalt petals. (No 7-19) Also contexts (1142, 1162, and 1314) (18 th century) 1371 Various 4 220mm 73 Four tin-glazed earthenware rim shards from four different vessels including what looks like (top left) a small saucer and (top right) a bowl with a blue wash on its interior. The (bottom) shard has been decorated with loose sponging and (bottom left) probably shows petals.
11 (No 7-20) (Portuguese 1635-60) 1305 Plate 1 74 One tin-glazed earthenware body shard from the shoulder of a Portuguese (Lisbon), plate decorated with light and dark blue splodges. The cobalt has run across its back and it has numerous pitting marks. To-date this is the only piece of Portuguese tin-glazed earthenware identified from a Scottish Archaeological excavation. (No 7-21) 1142 Plate 1 75 One tin glazed earthenware base shard probably from a Dutch plate. Decorated with well defined leaves and stems, the veins picked out in a darker blue. Some pitting and kiln stilt marks on the reverse.

14 (No 7-27) 1164 Dish 1 81 One tin-glazed earthenware shard from the base of a dish or small charger with a well worn footrim: traces of cobalt painting and a blue wash. The soil seems to have left a lustre effect on both surfaces. (No 7-28) 1314 Plates 3 82 Three tin-glazed earthenware shards of which two conjoin from context 1314: One of the vessels has been decorated with cobalt painting of leaves, hatching and two bands and the other with only the two blue bands. Both vessels have flat bases. (No 7-29) 1139 Bowl 1 83 One tin-glazed earthenware shard from the base and footrim of a large bowl decorated on its interior with cobalt painting and above its footrim with a painted band. The wedge shaped footrim is 14 mm high.

16 (No 7-32`) 2304 Bowl 1 86 One thick tin-glazed earthenware shard from a bowl decorated with cobalt blue painting and washes. The glaze is pitted and the fabric red. (No 7-33) 1220 Charger 1 & 120mm 87 One tin-glazed earthenware basal angle shard from what is probably a charger with a broad and high footrim and no decoration; tinglazed on both surfaces. The illustration left shows the base of this later 17 th century vessel.
17 (No 7-34) 1139? 1 & 70mm 88 One tin-glazed earthenware basal angle shard from what may be a vase decorated with three blue bands on it exterior. 19 (No 7-38) 1111 Cover 1 160mm 92 One tin-glazed earthenware shard, part of a cover, decorated in dark cobalt blue with a complex pattern of flowers, foliage, broad and narrow bands and crosshatching. Probably Dutch, 18 th century (No 7-39) 1164 handle 1 Not illustrated, one small undecorated handle shard probably from a chamber pot. (No 7-40) 1147 Charger 4 & 110mm 93 Four conjoining tin-glazed earthenware shards forming a large base fragment from a charger. The polychrome decoration consists of a stylized plant in pale blue, pale green and yellow surrounded by three blue bands. The reverse, which has a brood footrim, is covered with a lead glaze. On its upper surface are two prominent kiln stand marks 80 mm apart. The paste is a sandy buff: Anglo-Dutch, first half of the 17 th century.

The polychrome decoration consists of neatly painted stylized flowers and foliage in green, blue and yellow. Early 18 th century (No 7-42) 1139 Bowl 2 95 Two thickly potted tinglazed earthenware shards from the same large polychrome bowl decorated on its exterior with three thin blue painted bands below what look like a broad yellow band and petals in an unusual light brown/maroon. Above the lines are painted stylized sprays in green, light brown/maroon and blue. The interior also has two painted blue bands. Early 18 th century
21 (No 7-43) 1139 Bowl 1 96 One thickly potted tinglazed earthenware shard from a large polychrome bowl decorated on its exterior with what looks like foliage in green, brown, a dark blue and possibly manganese. Early 18 th century (No 7-44) 1139 Plate 2 20mm 97 Two conjoining thinly potted tin glazed earthenware shards from what may be a large shallow flat based polychrome plate with pitting on its reverse. Decorated with a finely painted manganese arcade and stylized leaves in both dark and light green with what look like splodges of a darker colour.

24 (No 7-50) 1626 Bowl 1 & 70mm 103 a, b & c One tin-glazed earthenware base shard, with a separately potted, well worn footrim, all in a buff sandy paste: The interior of what is almost certainly a fluted, moulded vessel has been decorated in blue with what is most likely a cherub like figure over the thick white glaze which covers both surfaces.
