A continued journey into the future A continued journey into the future A JOURNEY INTO THE FUTURE 2010 2015 was the first strategy document to be worked out in connection to the establishment of Linnaeus University. Now it is time for us to start the next phase of our journey and continue to build on the strengths of Linnaeus University. We have strengthened our position as one of the seats of higher learning in Sweden that attracts the highest number of students. Our marketing of the university towards non-european students has also been successful. We have increased our number of publications, been granted more external funding, and are now focusing on the development of excellent research environments in the form of Linnaeus University Centres. With our new strategy we wish to continue with the development work we started in 2010. Therefore, we have mobilised members of staff and students and also received help from external experts and persons who have good knowledge in competitive intelligence. In consultation with them we have formulated goals and strategies that appear to correspond to the needs and opportunities that we may be faced with in the future. In order to make our vision and strategy more concrete, the goals and strategies are specified in different plans of activity. We want to be a modern university with Småland as our base and the world as our stage. This means that we feel a commitment to the tasks and needs that arise locally and globally in a world in constant change. We combine curiosity, creativity, and utility with an entrepreneurial mindset in students and teachers; it is about developing selfconfidence, creativity, and generic competencies, as well as having the courage to take risks. Linnaeus University has a clear international profile with openness toward the surrounding world. We want to be a university that is characterised by high-quality educations and student focus. Having high knowledge objectives is not enough; we must also see the big picture when it comes to education, realising that the relationship between student, teacher, and study environment is essential for students well-being and their study results. We want our students to be creative and democratic, to have a lot of general knowledge about the world, and be ready to participate in the development of society. Good international research environments and networks are crucial for the success of a university. Both our ability to attract cutting-edge competence and our ability to increase our research funding are central for the university to be successful. The competition for the best researchers is tough, but an increased international recruitment may be a key to success. Our ability to combine curiosity-based research with applicable research strengthens our profile as a modern university. The Kamprad Family Foundation, which has chosen to make Linnaeus University a prioritised seat of higher learning, offers our researchers the opportunity to together with national and international collaboration partners apply for funding for research projects that aim to improve public welfare. During our first years as a university we have established close relations with various actors. The region s needs and possibilities have been important in this work, as have international collaborations. By nurturing and developing our relations with the surrounding world we hope to strengthen our profile in society and to develop our activities in an international direction. We hope to find international collaboration partners that can help us become an even more successful university. Our success stems from the spirit of Linnaeus, according to which we strive to carry out our activities. Together, through this spirit, we create the conditions for creative and intellectual processes. The scientist Carl Linnaeus worked in this spirit in the 18th century. Today, this spirit is carried into the future by students and staff at Linnaeus University. Stephen Hwang Rector Linnaeus University 6

A creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus A creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus Linnaeus University is a modern, international university where we are inspired by Carl Linnaeus, with roots in Småland and the world as our stage. It is the spirit of the scientist, entrepreneur, and pedagogue Linnaeus that makes up the foundation at Linnaeus University. Through curiosity and creativity he paved the way for what was then a new scientific paradigm. In a similar way, Linnaeus University wants to be characterised by boldness and commitment to new scientific ideas. Linnaeus was also an entrepreneur in the modern sense, capable of creating and running projects with various actors in society. All the travels he made had a short- or long-term benefit aspect. In that same spirit, Linnaeus University wants to promote an entrepreneurial approach of utility to society. Linnaeus was a proven skilled pedagogue, who through companionship with his students enthused them to overcome both physical and mental barriers. In a similar way, Linnaeus University wants to challenge habitual thinking, widen frames of reference, and promote Bildung; that is to say, formation, culture, erudition, and self-cultivation. Much the same way as Linnaeus, students and researchers can be successful in their activities by working to push limits in science, art, and practice. Being a student or a member of staff in the spirit of Linnaeus is the same as wanting to learn more, to spur oneself, to find one s own way, and wanting to reach set goals. Furthermore, it is our ambition to keep in mind the big picture during both study period and working life, in order for everyone to be able to develop as a person. Challenging educations and prominent research in combination with societal driving force and global values are the corner stones which combined make up a creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus. Vision Linnaeus University a creative and international knowledge environment promoting curiosity, creativity, companionship, and utility General goals Linnaeus University stands out through curious, creative, and skilled students and members of staff challenging educations with high societal relevance prominent scientific and artistic research which will benefit societal development commitment to societal challenges, innovations, and sustainable growth companionship between people an international and multicultural knowledge environment A creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus CHALLENGING EDUCATIONS PROMINENT RESEARCH SOCIETAL DRIVING FORCE GLOBAL VALUES 9

CHALLENGING EDUCATIONS A creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus CHALLENGING EDUCATIONS PROMINENT RESEARCH SOCIETAL DRIVING FORCE GLOBAL VALUES General goals CHALLENGING EDUCATIONS Linnaeus University stands out through curious, creative, and skilled students and members of staff challenging educations with high societal relevance prominent scientific and artistic research which will benefit societal development commitment to societal challenges, innovations, and sustainable growth companionship between people an international and multicultural knowledge environment Our creative knowledge environment integrates education and research, the common denominator being the creation of knowledge. A prerequisite for this to be sustainable and long-term is that students on all levels first-, second-, and third-cycle get to meet teachers who, either through their research or artistic work, continuously develop new knowledge. Integration of education and research, in combination with top-quality pedagogy, provides the basis for a dynamic and stimulating knowledge environment, offering creative and intellectual processes. The big picture, being systematical, and communication are keywords in our quality work. It is through critical thinking and the interaction between qualified teachers, students, and other actors in society that an education can reach the highest quality. Furthermore, all educations should include a Bildung perspective, enabling the students to widen their frames of reference beyond the main field of study of the degree programme, and strengthening their democratic approach. Our educations and contract educations are important in order to be able to meet society s need for competence. Strategies to reach the general goals are nurture and encourage commitment and desire to learn in students and members of staff create knowledge environments in which students and members of staff are given the opportunity to develop offer all students working life experience and stimulate an entrepreneurial approach recruit prominent, researching teachers nationally and internationally strengthen educations through connection to research strengthen professional educations and training by integrating scientific and relevant occupational competence make use of the competence of the university s interested parties at the planning and development of education further develop learning environment and meeting environments, both physical and digital, in order to promote creativity and good pedagogy make the quality work more systematical offer students a selection of courses with a Bildung perspective 10

PROMINENT RESEARCH A creative knowledge environment in the spirit of Linnaeus CHALLENGING EDUCATIONS PROMINENT RESEARCH SOCIETAL DRIVING FORCE GLOBAL VALUES General goals PROMINENT RESEARCH Linnaeus University stands out through curious, creative, and skilled students and members of staff challenging educations with high societal relevance prominent scientific and artistic research which will benefit societal development commitment to societal challenges, innovations, and sustainable growth companionship between people an international and multicultural knowledge environment Our creative knowledge environment is based on scientific and artistic research of high quality. Our research should be of benefit to the development of society and contribute to solving the problems society is faced with. At the same time, our research shall also develop and create applicable theories, methods, and results. This striving requires collaborations where creative and intellectual processes are crucial for the scientific or artistic projects to be successful. Therefore, Linnaeus University supports and stimulates international collaborations with well-reputed universities. Structures should be in place that make it easy for researchers from different faculties to collaborate, since the research questions of society can rarely be thoroughly answered by one discipline alone. Through prioritising, research profiles are to develop and be assessed based on the quality requirements of the scientific community, much like Linnaeus University Centres. Researchers at our university are offered a unique opportunity to together with researchers from other seats of learning, both nationally and internationally apply for project funding from the Kamprad Family Foundation, which has expressed a wish to support Linnaeus University. Strategies to reach the general goals are stimulate and promote research environments to contribute to the development of society through their research collaborate with other seats of higher learning, nationally and internationally develop the research base of professional educations and training systematically work to increase publication with national and international reach in competition as well as in collaboration with others formulate research projects of societal relevance and apply for financial support from the Kamprad Family Foundation establish structures enabling research collaborations across faculty borders further develop Linnaeus University Centres 13
